Detroit Red Wings captain and all-star Nicklas Lidstrom became the first european defenceman to reach the 1000 point mark last night. Lidstrom assisted on a pair of goals to help lift the Wings to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings.
Lidstrom is the eight defenceman to reach that mark, and the 4th Red Wing as well.
Aside from the milestone, this win helped the Red Wings to back to .500 after a surprisingly very slow start. Aside from several key departures that included Marian Hossa and Mikael Sammuelson, Detroit has also lost Johan Franzen to long-term injury and Pavel Datsyuk due to an injury the head, neck, face, chest and breast area. Not to mention inconsistent goaltending from Chris Osgood and backup netminder Jimmy Howard. Perhaps their start is not so surprising?
In any case, I don't mean to crap in their cornflakes. The Red Wings have probably played more games than any other club over the past decade due to the amount of post-season appearances they have made... such success cannot come without a price. While they may be a bit sluggish out of the gate, I suspect they will get back in gear in good time.
Around the league however, many of the predicted powerhouses have stumbled to start the year. The Vancouver Canucks have faltered on the heels of weak goaltending provided by Roberto Luongo, and they've also lost Daniel Sedin... no Henrik... no wait Daniel to a broken left foot... no right foot, ... no left for 4- 6 weeks... no months... wait, no weeks. Sedin joins a growing list of broken Canucks that now include Sami Salo, Pavel Demitra and Mathieu Scneider... but Matty should return by the end of this month.
The San Jose Sharks have not had the start most would have expected, or the fans out West would have hoped for. The big off season acquisition of Dany Heatley has done little to propel this club to a roaring start, while he has put up respectable numbers, the Sharks have let in alot of goals... thus not won alot of games... only 3 of their first 7 (and they were taken apart by Ovechkin and the Capitals 4-1 last night).
If the playoffs were to start today (and I know they don't and it's still early... it's just fun to check this stuff out so hang with me) the Detroit Red Wings, San Jose Sharks, Anaheim Ducks, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes would be watching. Perhaps the biggest surprises are the Colorado Avalanche (who sit atop the West tied with the Blackhawks), the Phoenix Coyotes (who have allowed only 9 goals in their first 6 games), the Los Angeles Kings (Anze Kopitar is behind only Ovechkin in points and looks like he and the other young Kings are ready to take that next step), and the New York Rangers (Marion Gaborik remains healthy and productive, and the youngsters are producing where many predicted they wouldnt... oh and Wade Redden is playing well!). Oh and
the Toronto Maple Leafs suck... but no real surprise there... unless you are from Toronto and think every year is 'the year'.
Wild start, and all around good stuff, but keep in mind we aren't even 10 games in yet... the wheels could come flying off or come back on for just about every team. Enjoy my friends!
Is there anything better than a Stanley Cup Final Game 7? Perhaps a Game 9, when then NHL officially switches to the 2-3-2-1-1 format... but until that blessed day arrives... we must embrace this 7th and final match of this Championship series.
Up to this point, we've heard it all. Who's better, who's faster, who has the better defenseman, offense, goaltending, biggest sticks, playoffbeards, hottest chicks, etc. The fact remains that the series is even, and both clubs truly have been equal to the task (as much as I hate that phrase and want to slam my face through my television everytime Emerick spits it out). The one pattern... the home team has won every game. If your life was on the line (perhaps you are seated with a goblet filled with red wine generously laced with Iocane powder) the smart move would be to choose the home team once more.
Regardless of the home ice advantage, I think we are in store for a legendary game tomorrow night. Two outstanding hockey clubs, loaded with scores of future Hall of Famers will leave it all on the ice (another overused string of words that send shockwaves through my spine) for one final game.
Good luck gentlemen, and everyone, enjoy the game!
I've said since last summer that I expected the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins to meet up in the Stanley Cup Finals again this year, and I was hardly alone in that thinking. It's not much of a stretch considering the star power, youth and depth of both clubs... in fact, I would hardly be surprised if both teams are in the same position again next year.
Last year the Red Wings defeated the Penguins in 6 games to take the Stanley Cup... this year I think the results will be considerably different. The Red Wings have been hit with the injury bug, and hit hard. Some of their biggest players like defenceman Niklas Lidstrom, and forward Pavel Datsyuk were forced to watch from the sidelines in the Western Conference Finals. However, Detroit seems to have a bottomless pool from which they can draw talent from and plug in players to fill those voids... and again found a way to win.
The Pittsburgh Penguins look like a different team this post-season. A year older and wiser, they have used their experience to march right back to the Stanley Cup Finals, and I doubt they will be blinded by the stage they are on this year. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin have been an incredible one-two punch this playoffs for the Penguins and I think they will continue to be dominant in the Finals. More than anything, I don't think Sidney Crosby will allow his club to fall this time, and will find a way for them to win.
As I stated above... Playoff Beard Prediction: Penguins in 6 games.
The playoff beards this post season have been remarkable once again. The Penguins pre-pubescent squad has been bolstered by some veteran playoff beard in Bill Guerin (who's got a beauty salt and pepper version of the Niedermayer growing), and Max Talbot once again looks like homeless man who happened to find a pair of skates. In Detroit... where shaving seems to be illegal now, Dan Cleary, and Johan Franzen are sporting Castaway style facial hair, and Henrik Zetterberg looks like the young version of Santa Claus (you know the puppet version before his beard went white)... but will his playoff beard bring gifts to all the good little fans of Detroit this season?
There is one playoff beard I've been very impressed with this playoffs, but I'm inclined to keep it to myself for the time being... I'm certain you've seen it, and it is a dark horse in the runnning for the Chuck Norris trophy this year. In the meantime... sound off. I want to hear from my fellow Beardians who you think deserves the Norris Trophy.
Well it's official folks... the Detroit Red Wings will meet the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals... again. The Red Wings finished off the Chicago Blackhawks this evening in 5 games defeating their opponents 2-1 overtime.
A year ago unrestricted free agent forward Marian Hossa ditched his Penguin blacks, for a one year contract and a fresh new Red Wing jersey and a quest to win a Stanley Cup with a team that he was certain would help get him there. Little did he realize that he may actually have to face off against the club he abandoned. Could there be more pressure on any single player in this series than Hossa? Captain Bosh thinks not!
Last night during the Western Conference finals Game 3, Detroit Red Wings defenceman Niklas Kronwall destroyed Chicago Blackhawks forward Martin Havlat along the boards... effectively removing him from the puck, and the remainder of the game. Kronwall was assessed a game misconduct for the hit (which I thought was overkill... actually I thought the hit was clean).
The Blackhawks held on to win Game 3, 4-3 in OT... bringing the series to 2-1 in the Wings favor. Havlat looked pretty shaken up after the hit, but did leave the ice on his own. Whether he returns or not will be a major concern for the Hawks.
Barely six months ago, the free agency period began and the unrestricted, restricted, and soon-to-be unrestricted were courted by open checkbooks and vast sums of monies that most of us will never see in our lifetimes. This is when athletes become business men, or more accurately financial analysts and begin to dissect themselves like a stock investment. They compare their current value to their future value, and make their decisions based on that and the supply and demand of teams that are pursuing their services. Usually the risk is on the teams who sign them as they are betting that their new free agent acquisition will provide a level of play that equals or surpasses the contract they agreed too.
Last summer two players chose to assume more of that risk... and it may have been a decision they will regret in the future... financially.
Since July 1st, the economy has been ridden into the boards and stomped on like a Pronger 8 game special. Both the United States and Canada are facing some tough times and because of the that, the NHL may need to tighten it's belt and teams will most certainly be less generous with their wallets.
Marian Hossa, last summers prize unrestricted free-agent, who split time between the Atlanta Thrashers and Pittsburgh Penguins the season prior, was due a big pay day. The forward who helped the Penguins to the Stanley Cup Finals was offered 'kill people and get away with it' type money (reportedly the Edmonton Oilers offered him a nine year deal worth $81 million), but rather than chase the dollar, Hossa chose to chase his dream of winning a Stanley Cup. Hossa went on to sign a one-year deal for $7 million with the Detroit Red Wings, the very same team that dispatched him and the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Hossa gambled a long-term deal and huge dollars for the chance to play for and win the Stanley Cup in Detroit. The new Red Wing leads his club with 29 points, 15 goals and a +10 rating... and has them on top in the Central and just four points behind the San Jose Sharks... who perhaps should have been the club he signed with instead?
In fairness to Hossa, I do think that regardless of the economy he will have plenty of suitors, and will probably still find a club willing to shell out big time money for him. Will it be in the same range as last summers contracts? We will see.
Marion Gaborik. The Minnesota Wild's premier forward... or is he? Desperate to sign him prior to the start of the season, the Wild pulled out all of the stops, but rumors that Gaborik was seeking $10 million per year forever were abound. The Wild were rumored to be looking to sign him long-term (probably 6-7 years) in the $8 - $9 miilion range.... not too bad right? Not good enough for Gaborik. Talks broke down, and the Wild switched gears from signing him to trading him. The Wild's asking price was too high, and most teams were cautious after watching the Pens trade the farm to get Hossa, and watch him float away after July 1st. Why not wait to sign him next summer as well? Since that contract negotiations broke down, Gaborik has put together a season of Havlatian proportions. Injured early in the season, Gaborik has played just two games and collected 1 goal. He in a sense has not only screwed his team out of any trade scenario, but also screwed himself. See, Gaborik's skills are definitely worth millions of dollars... his groin however isn't worth $5. Aside from last year, when he played 77 games (almost a full season) and collected 83 points (42 goals, 41 assists) Gaborik's career has been consistently interrupted by injury... most notably his groin... with a solid honorable mention to the hip.
Gaborik will most certainly be dealt sometime this year, presumably by the February deadline, but the Wild will not get the lucrative return for him they feel they deserve. Likewise, Marian Gaborik may find that clubs will not be eager to break the bank on a player who makes his living on the Injured Reserved list.
Sidney Crosby recorded his 100th goal, his 200th point, and his 300th point last night as helped lift the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-1. Crosby was on a line with Evgeni Malkin for the first time this season and the combination paid immediate dividends as Crosby had a goal and 3 assists, and Malkin assisted on all 4 of the Penguins tallies. Malkin now has 201 points in 166 games.
Crosby's former teammate, Marian Hossa set a milestone last night as well recording his first goal as a Detroit Red Wing. The goal was an OT winner that killed a remarkable New York Rangers comeback last night and gave the Red Wings the 5-4 win. The score was also Hossa's 300th career score.
This game was great for the record. The Red Wings scored less than 30 seconds into the game and then again minutes later to take a quick 2-0 lead. It looked like the Rangers were going to fail this bench test outright, but managed to turn the game around and even take the lead late. The Red Wings however, are still the Red Wings, and are the Stanley Cup Champions for a reason. Detroit was able to tie the match, force OT, and close the game out quickly on Hossa's goal.
Quick Shave:
What is up with the Philadelphia Flyers? The Flyers have yet to record a victory this season, after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals last year, and surrendered their 5th straight loss last night to the San Jose Sharks.... a game that they had they carried the lead throughout. Perhaps allowing 44 shots on net is the first reason why. Was last year an abomination? Did they over-achieve, or are they under-achieving now? Questions like these are going to start being raised and Coach Steven's will soon be on the chopping block if this club doesn't begin to turn it around. Remember, Denis Savard was just fired a few days ago for losing three (a he won a game too), and Atlanta axed Bob Hartley after he dropped 6 straight last season.
I think Def Leppard should consider following Hasek and Drakes lead...
The Toronto Maple Leafs go into this season with nothing to lose, having bought out, traded, and basically sent packing every under performing high priced veteran (Sundin not included) and replaced them will a roster full of role players and grinders. That however was more than enough to spoil the Red Wings home opener (although Def Leppard definitely got an assist) in which Detroit raised it's Stanley Cup Championship banner.
The Leafs defeated the Red Wings 3-2. Defenceman Pavel Kubina, forwards Dominic Moore and Nikolai Kulemin (his first career NHL goal and game winner) scored and Vesa Toskala made 35 saves to complete the win.
July 1st is always a date to look forward to on the NHL calendar as it usually brings with it the feeling of hope, new beginnings and excitement, and after October those same notions more often than not, rapidly become unfulfilled expectations, let-downs, and bitter dissapointment. This summer obviously has brought us more of the same.
The Detroit Red Wings obviously made the biggest news this week, with their short-term marriage with free agent prize Marian Hossa. Hossa who was a singular thorn in their side in the Stanley Cup Final while facing off against them as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins was difficult to overlook. Similarly, Hossa saw the team that dispatched him and his new team mates an easy path to winning and getting his name on the Stanley Cup. The Pittsburgh Penguins are apparently upset with the manner in which Hossa has quickly switched sides and joined the enemy, and one could hardly blame them. However, the Penguins have just finished locking up superstar winger Evgeni Malkin, defenceman Brooks Orpik, and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to long-term deals that will keep the franchise moving in the right direction. They also picked up forwards Miroslav Satan, and Ruslan Fedotenko to plug the gaps left by Hossa, Malone, and Ruutu. Wouldn't it be ironic if the Penguins and Red Wings meet once again in the Stanley Cup finals this year... and this time around the Penguins come out on top? Or perhaps it would be poetic.
The Chicago Blackhawks landed defenceman Brian Campbell, the top blueline free agent to a multi-year deal in the $70 million range. They also signed free agent goaltender Cristobal Huet to a long term deal worth roughly $5 million per year. A curious move that could foreshadow the trade of current goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin. Otherwise the Hawks will be carrying over $10 million in salary for their goaltending tandem. Either way the Blackhawks should be fighting for a playoff berth next season, as they had already made tremendous strides last year thanks in large part to the youth of their club, specifically Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews.
The Edmonton Oilers made some big moves that should also have them battling for playoff contention as well. The Oil went the trade route and acquired star winger Erik Cole from the Carolina Hurricanes and defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky. With Visnovsky and Souray on the powerplay, the Edmonton Oilers will be a scary squad to take penalties against... although there have been some Souray trade rumors swirling. Edmonton is also on the Jaromir Jagr watch, and has apparently tendered the big winger a contract offer.
The New York Rangers brought free agent defenceman Wade Redden to the Big Apple for a modest sum of $6.5 million a year over the next years and re-signed defenceman Michal Rosival to a 4 year deal worth $20 million. Redden had an awful season last year in Ottawa, but then again, so did everyone else on the Senators. GM Glen Sather is banking on Redden rediscovering his game... I hope he's right. The Rangers also acquired Nikolai Zherdev and Dan Fritsche from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Fedor Tyutin and Christian Backman. Jackets fans, you will enjoy Tyutin's play, and as for Backman... well you will enjoy Tyutin's play. The Rangers bid farewell to UFA pest Sean Avery who fled South to Dallas where he signed the multi-year deal he was looking for at nearly $4 million a season, and unfortunately may have also disrespected Jaromir Jagr enough to see him in another jersey next year, or maybe even another country.
The Washington Capitals picked up goaltender Jose Theodore for $9 million over the next pair of seasons, and locked up their stud blueliner Mike Green for $21 million over the next 4 years.
The New Jersey Devils welcomed former Devils Bobby Holik and Brian Rolston back into the fold. Holik signed a one year deal worth $2.5 million and Rolston for $20.25 over the next four seasons. The Devils also re-signed Jay Pandolfo for $7.5 million over 3, and defenceman trade deadline pickup Bryce Salvador for $11.6 million for the next 4 years. I like what the Devils have done, and they are apparently still looking for more scoring and testing the waters on a few of the B-list wingers still available.
The Tampa Bay Lightning signed everyone. I kid you not. Forward Ryan Malone signed for $31.5 million for the next 7 years, and former Pens teammates Gary Roberts and Adam Hall followed suit by joining the Lightning. Tampa Bay signed forward Radim Vrbata for $9 million over the next three, and goaltender Olaf Kolzig to a one year deal worth $1.5 million. The new ownership has come out swinging, and stacked the forward lines, but they haven't addressed their blueline yet, and rumors are circling their one big gun in the back Dan Boyle. Regardless of what happens, the offensive corps will be a formidable one and this team doesn't look to be repeating last season where they finished in last place.
For an up to the minute look at all the transactions occurring in the NHL, check out the TSN Free Agent Tracker, as there is certainly much more to come.
The two big fish still remain unsigned. Former Toronto Maple Leaf Mats Sundin, and former New York Ranger Jaromir Jagr. Both have already recieved lucrative deals, but both players have their own sticking points. Jagr is looking for more than one year, and Sundin is not sure if wants to continue playing. Both seem content to wait the summer out now and take time before making a final decision. The Vancouver Canucks reportedly offered Sundin a $20 million contract for 2 years, which would make him the highest paid player in the league, and he is rumored to also have recieved very competitive offers from the Habs and Rangers as well. It is looking more and more like he will either retire, or eventually rejoin the Leafs. As the summer rolls on, most teams will have to make decisions on their rosters long before he makes up his mind. The Leafs will most likely be the only club with the cap space available to sign him in August. For Montreal and Vancouver to gamble on waiting for him, could be disastrous. Jagr has a 3 year deal from a Russian club waiting for him at $35 million tax-free. I could hardly blame him for taking it. There are also reports that the Penguins are trying to lure him back to Steel-town. No matter where they end up, I do hope that both continue to play in the NHL. It would be a shame to see them retire.
Have a Happy 4th of July everyone! Remember to keep your beards away from the fuse.
Detroit Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek officially called it a career today, announcing his retirement after 16 years in the NHL.
Hasek leaves the NHL as the one of the greatest netminders of all times. Twice a Stanley Cup Champion, a 6 time Vezina Trophy winner, and a two time winner of the Hart Trophy for the league MVP which he won consecutively in 1997 and 1998.
Hasek will certainly be a first ballot NHL Hall of Famer. For more on this story click here.
That being said... man was I hoping for a Game 7! And it almost happened. Gotta give credit to the Pittsburgh Penguins for making a series of this, and to both clubs for delivering a very memorable Stanley Cup playoffs.
The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Penguins 3-2 and closed out the season by winning the Stanley Cup in 6 games. Henrik Zetterberg who score the game winner also captured the Conn Smythe as the most valuable player during the playoffs. Zetterberg captured his first career Stanley Cup and collected 27 points during the playoffs, a franchise record for Detroit. Niklas Lidstrom became the first European captain to lead a team to the Stanley Cup. SOooo many stories. Osgood's comeback, which was almost the turning point for this club when Hasek fell apart in round one. Darren McCarty's inspirational comeback to professional hockey.
Congratulations!
The Pittsburgh Penguins transformation and maturation during this season has been remarkable. Their growth during this playoff series is nothing short of amazing. I think this group finally discovered what it takes to win a Stanley Cup, but unfortunately found the key to that just a little too late. Fear not. This club will be a dominant force for years to come, and I would be more surprised to not see them back in the Stanley Cup Finals next season. Marc-Andre Fleury has become the goaltender everyone thought he would be when he was drafted number 1. Crosby has certainly grown into the leader that everyone expected he would be. Malkin also woke up, and perhaps next year will realize how important an all-out effort is. Marian Hossa finally became a post-season performer! It would be great if they could retain him. I said before the series began that the Penguins would need to lose big before they win big. Well now that that is over with, it is time to get down to business boys. Congratulations on amazing season.
Now to the important business. Who will win the Chuck Norris Trophy? The options are endless, truly. You will find out soon enough who sported the finest playoff beard this year!
The Pittsburgh Penguins have staved off elimination after a thrilling triple overtime affair. Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury backstopped his club to a 4-3 win on a 55 save effort to force a game 6 and bring the series back to Pittsburgh.
Fleury made a save after save this morning to keep his club's season alive, and if the Pens do go on to win the Stanley Cup, he has to be seriously considered for the Con Smythe Trophy.
From a fan perspective this game was unreal. I'm still on edge right now, and am trying to figure out how I'm going to be able to get some sleep. Unbelievably great hockey. Detroit holds a 3-2 series lead and now has two more opportunities to win the Cup.
Big players do big things at big moments. Sidney Crosby is the man.
Granted the kid can't grow a playoffbeard yet (although high marks for the effort sir), he refused to quit and let his Penguins fall without a fight to the Detroit Red Wings. Crosby finally got Pittsburgh on the scoreboard in the series last night with his first of two goals. His efforts clearly energized the club. The Pens also got some secondary scoring, and the eventual game winner from forward Adam Hall, who's second effort goal was actually a thing of beauty.
The Red Wings kept things interesting and carried the play late in the game, but the Pens held on to win 3-2, cutting the Detroit series lead to 2-1. This was a great game to watch, especially the third period. Back and forth action, and an incredible amount of physical play.
Unfortunately we have to wait till Saturday for Game 4, but at least we get a break from Mike Milbury for an extra day. That Ovechkin interview during the second intermission was painful (no fault to Ovechkin). Congrats Mike. You've gone from crappy GM, to really crappy analyst. By the way, I love the "you guys are the coaches" segment on NBC (not really). Mike what would you do if you were the coach of the Pens. "I'd trade everybody, for little or no return. Mostly no return."
Even though I picked the Wings to take this series in 5 games, I am surprised that they have been so dominant thus far. They have found the secret to defeating the Penguins... by completely shutting them down, and keeping them off the scoreboard. Two straight games. Two shutouts.
The Red Wings have done a fabulous job at limiting the opportunities by the Penguins, but when they have broken through, Chris Osgood has been there, and been spectacular. Detroit has done an incredible job in keeping Crosby and Malkin off their game, and last night their frustration was beginning to show through. The Penguins have been unable to mount a sustained attack.
The Red Wings are also recieving scoring from their secondary players. While they managed to hold Zetterberg to just an assist, and Datsyuk off the scoresheet, the door was opened for Holstrom, Stuart, and an amazing goal by Valtteri Filppula.
The playoff beards. We have a banner crop this year my friends, and choosing the Chuck Norris trophy winner is going to be near impossible. Playoff beards appear to be required uniform for the bulk of the Detroit roster, and I have to give credit to the facial hair development being displayed by the largely pre-pubescent crew of the Penguins. Well done lads. You all look like you've been lost at see for months.
Game 3 shifts to Pittsburgh on Wednesday, and to NBC as well. The Versus crew bid us farewell this evening, and I have to give them credit. They've all really grown on me like a... playoff beard. However, the network switch should bring us into the loving embrace of our own Bill Clement, as he welcomes us into his tent, and his heart.
Pavel Datsyuk and the Detroit Red Wings put the Dallas Stars on the brink of elimination from the playoffs last night, and moved one step closer to moving on to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Pavel Datsyuk scored his first ever career NHL hat trick (which is mind-boggling) and helped lift the Red Wings to a 5-2 win, and a 3-0 series lead over the Dallas Stars.
I picked the Dallas Stars to win this series in 7, and frankly I don't think I've made a worse prediction this playoffs (except for maybe the Caps beating the Flyers in 3 games in round one.... but I was kinda kidding on that one... kinda). The Dallas Stars look outmatched part of the time, and completely frustrated for the remaining time. The Red Wings hold onto the puck (if you played the puck possession drinking game last night, you'd be in bad shape right now.... how many times did Doc and Eddie say 'puck possession'), and never give their opponents an opportunity to mount an attack. This series looks as good as over.
Is it me, or did Hillary Clinton steal Brian Engblom's lid?
I know that's a little off topic, but everytime I see the Senator on TV, I can't help but wonder what she'd look like with a playoff beard (it may help her bid for the Presidency.... actually no that's a bad idea). I digress.
Let's get to it....
EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
Pittsburgh Penguins versus Philadelphia Flyers
Everyone is saying that this is going to be THE series of the playoffs. I'm having a hard time finding an argument to counter that statement. Cross-state, intra-state.... call it what you will (including perhaps the most tedious stretch of road to travel if you happen to be going cross country), there is little love lost between these two clubs... and perhaps the two cities. Do people from Philadelphia hate the people in Pittsburgh? Most likely, and I'm sure the feelings are mutual. The Flyers have had a knack for driving Captain Sidney Crosby crazy, and have been successful in taking him out of his game.... however, Crosby has had some highlight reel performances against the Flyers. To be fair, both clubs are amazing. The Penguins have matured so quickly in the last 3 years, and the Flyers... HOLY CRAP! You sucked big time last season, and now they are in the Eastern Conference Finals! This series should be nasty from the opening faceoff, and should be an extended one, but ultimately I think the Penguins will find a way to win it.... even though the Cros-beard isn't happening. Jeff Friesen is still laughing.
Playoff Beard Prediction: Penguins in 6 games.
WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
Detroit Red WIngs versus Dallas Stars
For all the attention the Eastern Conference matchup is getting, I think this playoff series could be even more entertaining. The Detroit Red Wings appear to be on a mission, and have more or less cruised through the first two rounds with little difficulty (a slight road bump in Nashville, but a goalie change was just what the Babcock ordered). I think the easy road ends here and their first test will be at hand. The Dallas Stars knocked off the defending Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks in round one, and the second seeded San Jose Sharks (for all the crap I gave them, they still are a formidable hockey club... don't hate me for being right Shark fans) in round two. The Red Wings looked good in round one, and amazing in round two, but let's boil this down a bit. Yes they swept the Colorado Avalanche in 4 games, but who did they really defeat? The Avs were so decimated by injury that they were ready to call me up for game 5..... sadly the Bosher never got his opportunity. Side Note: Kris Draper with a playoff beard looks like Chuck Norris' stunt double. This series is going to be a long back and forth battle, and could hold a few surprises for everyone.
The Western Conference leading Detroit Red Wings will visit the Eastern Conference leading Ottawa Senators tonight in what has to be the game of the year.
Both teams are on a collision course for the Stanley Cup Finals this Spring as they have met very little resistance in their respective conferences. Detroit has dominated the West (except for the Blackhawks) and are 33-8-4 holding a very comfortable 16 point lead over second place San Jose. The Ottawa Senators have done likewise, going 28-10-4, with a 7 point lead over second place New Jersey.
Both clubs boast high powered offences, in fact 5 of the top 10 players in league scoring will be on the ice tonight. The Red Wings Henrik Zetterberg has 56 points (27 goals, 29 assists), Senators Daniel Alfredsson also has 56 points (26 goals, 30 assists), followed by linemate Dany Heatley who has 55 points (25 goals, 30 assists), Detroit's Pavel Datsyuk has 54 points (17 goals, 37 assists), and Ottawa's Jason Spezza has 52 points (15 goals, 37 assists). This is the game of the year.... until they meet again in the playoffs (hopefully).
Quick Shave:
Goaltender Curtis Joseph may be returning to the NHL within the next few days. Apparently there are 5 teams pursuing the veteran netminder, but Joseph has narrowed his choices down to two clubs, the San Jose Sharks, and the Calgary Flames. The Sharks thus far this season have employed only Evgeni Nabokov in net this year, as he has started every game for his team. Speaking of goaltenders, I have to make mention of Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Ty Conklin. What a comeback this guy is having. Destined to spend the remainder of his professional career in the minors, with the Pens AHL affiliate, Conklin took advantage of a callup after starter Marc-Andre Fleury was injured, and Dany Sabourin was incapable of performing at a winning level. Since his promotion to starting goaltender, Conklin has helped the Penguins to 8 straight victories, 2nd place in the Atlantic Division and 4th overall in the East. He's also been a bright spot on a few of Bosher's fantasy rosters. Keep it up Conker!
It was the battle of Russia last night on the Versus Network as the Detroit Red Wings Pavel Datsyuk squared off against Alexander Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals.
At first glance I almost blew this game off because it looked to be a rout in the making. I'm glad I chose not to.
The Washington Capitals have been playing improved hockey since their head coach Glen Hanlon was dismissed and replaced with Bruce Boudreau who currently wears the interim tag. The Caps made a game of it, and kept it interesting up till the very end as Alexander Semin scored late in the game to tie it 3-3 and force overtime. The match went to a shootout where goaltender Olaf Kolzig was overpowered by the potent Wings offense (who all used the same move, a backhand) of Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and Jiri Hudler, who all tallied goals.
Datsyuk assisted on all three regulation scores for the Red Wings, and Tomas Holstrom scored twice in the game. Quick Shave:
What do we do with the New York Islanders forward Chris Simon. Simon has once again caught the attention of the NHL with his barbarian tactics as he brought his skate down on the Pittsburgh Penguins Jarkko Ruutu's leg Saturday night. Intent to injure was clearly obvious, and is hard to imagine him not getting handed a lengthy suspension that will be handed down sometime today. Simon just finished serving a 25 game suspension for a slash across the throat of New York Rangers forward Ryan Hollweg last year. TSN.ca published his career suspension highlights yesterday:
25 games for a high stick on Ryan Hollweg 2 games for kneeing Sergei Zubov 2 games for cross checking Ruslan Fedotenko 2 games for elbowing Anders Eriksson 1 playoff game for cross checking Peter Popovic 3 games for verbal comments directed at Mike Grier 5 games for slashing Dennis Vial
In an effort to find himself, Simon and the Islanders agreed yesterday that it would be a good idea for him to take a much needed break from the game. Not officially being suspended by the team, but it's hard to call this anything else. Charles Wang, owner of the Islanders met with Simon and also released a statement :
"The actions of Chris Simon on Saturday do not reflect what the New York Islanders stand for. They were reckless, potentially dangerous and against our team concept of grit, character and heart. We know Chris as a respected teammate and as a gracious man away from the playing surface and believe strongly that he has earned our continued support. The Islanders are going to provide some time for Chris away from the team and give him the counseling he needs and the compassion he deserves. When Chris is completely ready, he will be a member of our team again."
Whatever comes of this, it will be difficult for Simon to ressurrect his NHL career. He seems incapable of controlling himself and acting with any sense of restraint.
Game of the Night:
Dallas at Edmonton 9:30 PM
The Edmonton Oilers are on the verge of tying the shootout wins record set by the Dallas Stars which currently rests at 11 wins. How appropriate would it be if it came down to a shootout tonight? Enjoy the games!
The Detroit Red Wings keep their man between the pipes, Dominik Hasek. Hasek returned to his dominant form last season helping the Red Wings to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 5 years, and while earning just $900,000 for the effort.
The Red Wings and Hasek agreed to a one year contract worth $2 million dollars and a performance bonus plan that could see him double it to $4 million if he achieves the standards set before him (I believe he got $1 million when the Wings last won the Cup under his tenure).
While up there in age at 42 years old, Hasek is still playing at top form and shrugged off the label of having an easily injured groin. Good move by the Wings.
Quick Shave:
I have to tip my hat to Garth Snow. He and the Isles have had a rough week watching their star players leave Long Island in pursuit of fortune elsewhere. To stop the bleeding, Snow and the New York Islanders signed forward Mike Comrie to a one year deal worth $3.375 million. Comrie had a decent year last season collecting 20 goals and 25 assists in 65 games last season and scored 6 points during the Ottawa Senators playoff run to the Stanley Cup Finals. The New York Islanders also signed forward Bill Guerin to two year deal worth $9 million. Guerin had a rebound year last season collecting 36 goals and 20 assists while playing for the St. Louis Blues and the San Jose Sharks. The Ottawa Senators promoted John Paddock as their new head coach to replace the recently promoted Bryan Murray. Paddock was Murray's assistant last season. The Minnesota Wild signed former Islanders defenceman Sean Hill to a one year deal today. Hill was suspended last season for violating the NHL/NHLPA Performance Enhancing Substances Program and will have still have to serve 19 of the 20 game suspension he recieved as a result next season.
Let's talk about the Edmonton Oilers and Kevin Lowe. Lowe and the Oilers made big news today by signing Buffalo Sabres forward Thomas Vanek to a seven year, $50 million offer sheet. The Buffalo Sabres quickly matched the offer on their restricted free agent. Lowe can hardly be blamed, in fact I think credit is due as he is doing everything within in his arsenal as a GM to help better his club. The Sabres had already lost their top two centers Daniel Briere and Chris Drury to free agency so there was little chance they would let Vanek leave. Rumors are abound that Lowe may not be done and may attempt to lure away other restricted free agents through the same means. Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils, Michael Cammalleri of the Los Angeles Kings, Dustin Penner of the Anaheim Ducks and Lee Stempniak of the St. Louis Blues are all potential targets for Lowe.
The race for teams to re-sign their potential unrestricted free agents has begun.
The Toronto Maple Leafs re-signed their captain and forward Mats Sundin to a one year deal worth $5.5 million. The new contract includes and no trade clause.
The Leafs reportedly wanted to sign Sundin to a longer contract, but he preferred a shorter term deal. Sundin also gave the Leafs a home town discount from his previous deal which payed him $6.3 million last season. The shorter contract also means that his retirement is also on the horizon.
Sundin played in 75 games last season for the Leafs recording 76 points (27 goals, 49 assists).
The Detroit Red Wings announced the re-signing of their age defying defenseman Chris Chelios yesterday as well. Chelios and the Wings agreed on a one year contract worth $850,000 with incentive bonuses.
Chelios now 45, will turn 46 during his 24th season in the NHL, and needs just two more playoff games to pass goaltender Patrick Roy for most NHL post season games played.
Chelios has been a mainstay on the Red Wings blue line for the better part of a decade now, and he shows no sign of slowing down. He was a big part of the defence corp that helped pick up the slack during the playoffs after defenseman Mattheiu Schneider was sidelined with a broken wrist. For the money, it's hard to argue against the Red Wings keeping him in the fold.
So we are down to two after the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 (Wings made it very interesting in the final period) to take the Western Conference Championship in 6 games and move on to face the Ottawa Senators in the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Ducks were predicted to be in the finals by just about everyone (including myself.... however I said they would be facing the Rangers), so really it's no surprise to see them there. The Senators started off the season poorly, and finished strongly.... they started playing much better late fall.... and in the playoffs have been just a shot glass shy of perfect.
The Stanley Cup Finals don't begin until Monday, May 28th, at 8:00 PM, and I plan on taking all that time to drink.... I mean think.... about what team will be our next Stanley Cup Champion. Frankly, I haven't got a clue (other than the brand of beer I will be consuming) as to who will win. What I do know is that this matchup looks outstanding.
I feel bad for Andreas Lilja today. The Detroit Red Wing defenceman scored the lone goal for his team that nearly stood up as the game winner (until some late power play heroics by Ducks defenceman Scott Niedermayer), and coughed up the puck in front of Dominik Hasek leading to Teemu Selanne's.... overtime heroics.
To recap quickly, Scott Niedermayer tied the game with less than a minute to play on a powerplay opportunity where the Ducks had pulled Jean Sebastien Giguere (who was outstanding in net for his team last night, shutting down a very strong effort by Detroit) in favor of another skater. The Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings headed to overtime tied 1-1, and midway throught the extra period, Lilja made his error. Dogged by Teemu Selanne he came out from behind the net, and was forechecked by Andy MacDonald. The puck came loose, and was collected by Selanne, and backhanded high past Hasek. The play was over in seconds, but watching it seemed to last forever. I think there was actually a collective gasp at the Joe last night. Unreal, but fantastic game.
The Red Wings were dominant, unfortunately for them, so was Giguere, who stopped 36 of the 37 shots he faced. The Ducks took the 2-1 victory, and can close the series out in Game 6 back in Anaheim on Tuesday night.
Before I get into the game.... how about Teemu Selanne's playoff beard? That is how you groom some facial hair Alfredsson! Well done Teemu, well done indeed sir.
The Anaheim Ducks responded big time last night, after the 5-0 can of butt kick the Red Wings opened up on them in game 3. The Ducks battled without their best defenceman (perhaps second best? who would you rather have... Pronger or Niedermayer?.... I'm going Niedermayer... I digress) to defeat the Red Wings 5-3 and tie the series 2-2 as it heads back to Detroit for game 5.
Teemu Selanne and his magnificent playoff beard potted a goal and two assists, Corey Perry opened the scoring, and Ryan Getzlaf scored the game winner. The Red Wings were unable to capitalize on two, two man advantage powerplays and Dominik Hasek appeared ordinary in net allowing 4 goals on 22 shots.
Game 5 returns to Detroit on Sunday in a series where both teams have split. No home ice advantage so far in this one. The next win will be very important, but I wouldn't be surprised to see both of the teams go the distance.
Game of the Night:
No games tonight folks, it is a day of rest for the NHL. Saturday however, the battle will be back on in Buffalo.
Sorry for the long absence folks, but the Bosher has been on the road, and while I've been able to stay informed and watch some unreal hockey over the past few days, I have been unable to deliver my sermon unto you.
Let's talk about last night. The Red Wings hammered the Anaheim Ducks 5-0 in Game 3 to take a 2-1 series lead. Dominik Hasek was superb making 29 saves and recording his 14th career playoff shutout. The big hero of the evening for the Red Wings was heart and soul forward Tomas Holmstrom who scored two goals and set up Valtteri Filppula for the Red Wings 5th goal. Todd Bertuzzi and Johan Franzen also scored for Wings, in what can only be described as a rout.
The big news today following last night's game is the fate of Anaheim Duck's defenceman Chris Pronger. Pronger and forward Rob Niedermayer combined for a hit on Tomas Holmstrom into the boards that forced him from the game briefly to recieve stitches in his forehead. Niedermayer got a 5 minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct, but video reviews of the play show Pronger elbowing Holmstrom to the head. There will be a disciplinary hearing today to determine whether or not Chris Pronger will face a suspension.
Game of the Night:
Buffalo at Ottawa 7:00 PM
What the heck happened to the Buffalo Sabres? The Ottawa Senators that's what. Will the President's Trophy winning Sabres go down in a sweep? Or will they do some staving and force the series back to Buffalo for a Game 5. They are behind the 8-ball right now (another great phrase) and Ottawa is in a choice position to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals by closing it out tonight. Enjoy the game!
I still remember my boys from Detroit's response in August when the Red Wings signed Dominik Hasek. I think it went something like this:
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Well after last night's 31 save performance, I think they are all saying...
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Dominik Hasek is back and playing amazing hockey. Hasek saved all but one of the shots he faced last night including a few mind boggling stops late in the game (Dustin Penner is still in shock) to give the Red Wings the 2-1 win, and a 1-0 series lead over the Anaheim Ducks.
Anaheim outshot the Wings 32-19, but it didn't matter. I had a feeling that this series might come down to goaltending and last night's game was certainly a great indicator of that. These teams are very evenly matched so much so, that it is a push on both sides of the puck. Except in net. I have to give it to the Red Wings. J.S. Giguere is good, but Hasek has been here before, and he is doing it again.
Henrik Zetterberg scored early for the Wings on an off angle shot that was deflected past Giguere (I believe off of Beauchemin's skate) and took the 1-0 lead. Chris Kunitz tied the game for the Ducks in the third on a beautiful play setup by Scott Neidermayer and Ryan Getzlaf. Then late in the game on a powerplay, Nicklas Lidstrom used Tomas Holstrom's head to bank a shot past J.S. Giguere. How great has Holstrom been in front of the net? This poor guys lower back and thighs must look like burger by now.... but he is protected by a gorgeous playoff beard! The Beard is strong with this one.
The Red Wings gave up more shots than they normally do (which is probably because of the loss of Schneider) but Hasek stood tall. The Ducks may have to throw 60 shots on net in game 2 if they want to win. Game of the Night:
Ottawa at Buffalo 8:00 PM
Game 2! Buffalo will look to rebound from what was simply an outclassing by Ottawa in Game 1. This team has rebounded well from adversity in the playoffs thus far, so look for a strong effort tonight as they try to avoid going to Ottawa down 2-0. Enjoy the game!
The Red Wings sealed the deal on the San Jose Sharks last night with a 2-0 victory, and clinched the series 4-2.
Red Wings forward Mikael Samuelsson scored two in the first period, and goaltender Dominik Hasek made 28 saves to complete the shutout victory, the 13th of his playoff career. The Red Wings depleted defensive corps were anchored by Nicklas Lidstrom and Chris Chelios who played almost the entire game recording 29 and 26 minutes respectively.
So the Red Wings have shrugged off to previous playoff dissappointments and put together a beautiful run that has exposed their grit, determination, and resilience in the face of adversity. Now they move on to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 5 years to face off against the Anaheim Ducks, the second best team in the West (in points).
The San Jose Sharks dropped three in a row to the Red Wings and will find it difficult to pull anything positive from this playoffs, especially after recording a Conference tying 51 wins during the regular season. Joe Thornton was dominant in the Sharks first 9 playoff games recording 11 points, but was shutdown over the last two. Is this as far as the big guy can carry his team? Perhaps Boston recognized this last year? In any case, the Sharks must learn the agony of losing in the playoffs, and pay their dues before moving on..... just like Ottawa, Buffalo, Anaheim, and even Detroit. Their time will come..... just not now.
The playoffs really haven't thrown us to many surprises, but for that matter, the four remaining teams were four that were at the top of the standings for most of the year.... no Cinderellas this year Edmonton. The matchups are going to be outstanding. The Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres in the Eastern Conference should live up to it's billing, and the Ducks vs. the Wings in the West..... well I have no complaints whatsoever.
Who says overtime is boring? Well Mike Brophy from the Hockey News does, but after last night's game, I think he may be printing a retraction this week.
The Detroit Red Wings battled from a 2 goals down and found a way to solve (i love that.... solving is almost as cool as staving) San Jose Sharks goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. Wings forward Tomas Holstrom scored with seconds remaining in the second to bring Detroit within one goal. With under a minute to play in the game Valtteri Filppula sprung Robert Lang who put the tying goal past Nabokov and force overtime. Deep into overime, the Red Wings capitalized on a power play opportunity and the marvelous playoff beard of defenceman Matthieu Schneider. Schneider grabbed a bad clear and let fly the game winner in OT. The Red Wings defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-2 and tied the series 2-2.
The Red Wings played with some desperation and were solid throughout, and most importantly never quit. I loved the way, and the way they continue to battle, an attitude that has been missing in previous post seasons. Props to Sharks forward Bill Guerin who is sporting a terrific playoff beard and took a slapshot off the chin from point blank late in the game. That is a tough man.... and you know that playoff beard surely protected his face from serious injury.
Quick Shave:
The Ottawa Senators are one win from reaching the Eastern Conference Finals after last night's 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils. The Sens won their second straight game at home thanks to goals from Dany Heatley, Daniel Alfredsson, and the game winner by Mike Fisher. The New Jersey Devils shutdown line of Madden, Brylin, and Pandolfo is a combined -20 during the playoffs! That line was their bread and butter all season when it came to stopping their opponents top line and in the playoffs thus far they have almost become a liability. Add that to Martin Brodeur not playing his best hockey and you have a team that is now facing elimination.
I'd like to send a special thank you out to my boys at the Face Off Hockey Show who invited the Bosher on last night for an in depth discussion on facial hair. To listen to the broadcast click here!
Game of the Night:
Vancouver at Anaheim 9:00 PM
The Ducks, although no longer Mighty, are certainly playing that way. They have and opportunity to close out their series against the Canucks tonight and advance to the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive season. The Canucks have battled back successfully from 3-1 defecits before, and have the chance to do it once more. Enjoy the games!
No seriously? Where have the Flames been for the past two games? They weren't in Detroit yesterday afternoon. When Chicken Parm says he's apalled with your lack of performance..... that's not too good boys.
Well Miika Kiprusoff showed up, but unfortunately he was left out to dry by his teammates. In two games against the Detroit Red Wings, the Calgary Flames have allowed 99 shots on their goaltender. Kiprusoff faced 21 in a first period last night that seemed as though the Flames were on a perpetual penalty kill. Detroit opened up a two goal lead in the first on goals by Pavel Datsyuk, and Nicklas Lidstrom and pretty much left the Flames behind once again (there was a slight gleam of hope early in the second when Dion Phaneuf scored early in the second, but when your team only manages to take 15 shots on Dominik Hasek.... you may as well not take any).
Valtteri Filppula scored on a Johan Franzen rebound and sealed the 3-2 win for the Detroit Red Wings in the third. The Red Wings head to Calgary with a 2-0 series lead for Game 3. Maybe that's where the Flames are hiding?
Quick Shave:
Looks my Minnesota Wild upset of the Anaheim Ducks was a brilliant pick (unless the Wild run the table, which could be part of my plan.....). The Anaheim Ducks stifled the Wild 2-1 last night to take a 3-0 series lead and are set to go for the sweep on Tuesday night. Ducks keeper Ilya Bryzgalov made 19 saves for the win, and has been very steady for his club in the post season. Dallas Stars goaltender Marty Turco (he made 35 saves last night) blanked the Vancouver Canucks for 5 straight periods but they finally broke through late last night. Jan Bulis scored for the Canucks to tie the game in the third, and force overtime once again. Taylor Pyatt wrapped up the game less than eight minutes in to give the Canucks the 2-1 overtime win, and a 2-1 series lead. The Ottawa Senators bounced back hard, and bounced the Pittsburgh Penguins to the tune of a 4-2 win, and 2-1 series lead last night. Marc-Andre Fleury allowed 4 goals on 25 shots last night, and at times looked ordinary. I wonder if the young goaltender is succumbing to the pressure of the post season? Would Thibault be an upgrade at this point?
Game of the Night:
New Jersey at Tampa Bay 7:00 PM
Buffalo at NY Islanders 7:30 PM
Nashville at San Jose 10:00 PM
Playoff Hockey is great. I'm salivating just looking at all of these matchups. I expect Martin Brodeur to be dominant tonight after being anything but in Game 2. The Islanders should expect to face a very inspired Sabres team tonight in Uniondale. Nashville and San Jose will be just outstanding. I hope that series goes to a game 7. Enjoy the games!
I had a feeling the Red Wings would be ready for this series..... but I don't think anyone including the Flames could have anticipated the onslaught they brought to the ice last night.
Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff was hammered with 46 shots, 4 of which travelled past him (which really for him isn't too bad, but it says little for the Flames defencemen.... where were you guys?). The Red Wings out played, and physically abused the Flames all night. Defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom scored the second goal of the game and the game winner. Pavel Datsyuk scored ending a 26 game goaless streak in the playoffs (what a monkey to get off your back huh?), and Dominik Hasek was solid, even though he really didn't need to be. He made 19 saves for the 4-1 win. Detroit takes the 1-0 series lead into Sunday's Game 2.
Congratulations also to Chris Chelios for playing in his record setting 22nd time in the playoffs, which surpassed Ray Borque's record of 21 post-seasons. Chelios also became the second oldest player to play in the post season last night, behind only Gordie Howe.
Quick Shave:
The New York Islanders may get Rick DiPietro back for Game 2, and his return probably couldn't come at a better time. The Islanders hung tough with the Buffalo Sabres for two periods, mostly because of the solid goaltending of Wade Dubielewicz, until Buffalo broke the game open in the third winning 4-1. Sabres Chris Drury scored two goals, and Brian Campbell (Sam, you asked for his portrait....and Bosh delivered for ya! Enjoy sir!) bookended those scores, with two goals of his own. Tim Connolly who just returned to action after missing all but the final two games of the season with a concussion set up Campbell's first score. The Buffalo Sabres take the 1-0 series lead. The New York Rangers won their first playoff game in a decade last night as they defeated the Atlanta Thrashers 4-3 and take the 1-0 series lead. The Rangers really came out swinging, but I was very impressed with the Thrashers as the continued to comeback, and nearly potted the game tying goal with less than a minute to remain in the game. The Rangers pounded playoff rookied Kari Lehtonen with 38 shots. The New Jersey Devils defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 last night to take game 1 and the 1-0 series lead. While Tampa Bay's big guns of Martin St. Louis (1 goal, 1 assist), and Vincent Lecavalier (2 goals) both produced for their club, it was their goaltending that let them down. Lightning goaltender Johan Holmqvist allowed 5 goals on 24 shots. New Jersey Devils sophomore Zach Parise (who has blossomed into a star this season) scored two goals including the game winner.
Playoff Beard Fan of the Month
I got an email yesterday from our good friend Alison in Cincinatti, a big supporter of the Buffalo Sabres, and the playoff beard. I will let her email to me do the talking:
"so um.... this is a strange one for ya.
i come from niagara falls, ny so needless to say my entire family is hopelessly devoted to the sabres. my older brother and i live in cincinnati now, which is horrible for hockey season. long story short, i made a drunken bet with my older brother and now i have playoff pits. yeah...its gross, but i said i was gonna do it, and now that its game one of the series, i'm past the point of no return. anyway, i thought that you'd appreciate this story of the female dedication to the game. even though ya know..chicks with hairy armpits...ugh...
GO SABRES!!!!!!
alison"
Now that is what I call fan support! Well done Alison!
Game of the Night:
San Jose at Nashville 8:00 PM
Dallas at Vancouver 9:00 PM
Minnesota at Anaheim 10:30 PM
Game 2's abound, Western style! A great friday night, and no need to hold up on the beer, or go to bed early and miss a long overtime game if it should happen again! WOO HOO! Enjoy the games!
The Detroit Red Wings have just announced the signing of center Pavel Datsyuk to a 7 year contract worth nearly $47 million. Datsyuk will earn roughly $6 to $7 million per year during the contract.
Datsyuk has had a solid year scoring 87 points (27 goals, 60 assists) and is an amazing +37 rating (tied for 4th best in the NHL) in 78 games this season and could have become an unrestricted free agent in July.
The Detroit Red Wings ripped off a 1-0 win in a tight contest against the Anaheim Ducks last night. Forward Pavel Datsyuk, had the only score on the night, and Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hasek made 25 saves for his 7th shut out of the season, and the 75th of his career.
The win launched the Red Wings into a three way tie with 103 points atop the NHL with the Nashville Predators, and the Buffalo Sabres. Pretty huge victory for the Red Wings who have been chasing the Predators for some time now, and have now reeled them in.
Interesting note. The Red Wings have once again clinched a playoff spot, for what is now the 16th straight season. The longest such playoff streak in North American professional sports. The New York Yankees have the second longest streak at 12. The Red Wings are about winning plain and simple.
Quick Shave:
Looks like Jack Johnson will be going to the big league this season afterall. Reports are that Michigan defenceman has agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Kings and may join the team for Thursday night's game against the Vancouver Canucks. I know this is a bummer for you Michigan fans (Paul, Jeff....hug accordingly) but this should be a nice boost for the Kings just to get a glimpse of the future of their blue line. The Philadelphia Flyers are looking to lock up their newly acquired goaltender Martin Biron. Reports are that Biron will sign for 2 years for $6.8 million. Good move by the Flyers, who would have lost Biron to the free agent market had they not signed him, and he's helped the Flyers game since his arrival. The New Jersey Devils should welcome back captain Patrik Elias as they face the New York Islanders tonight. The Devils are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Atlantic Division lead. Gary Bettman made a statement about fighting yesterday, since it's been a hot topic in the NHL over the past week (really? I hadn't heard much about that?). Bettman stated that "Fighting is part of the game, so suck it up", then the commissioner moved to the press area and kicked the crap out of a dozen reporters. Go GB! Click here to view the melee and the report.
Game of the Night:
NY Rangers at Montreal 7:30 PM
New Jersey at NY Islanders 7:30 PM
Carolina at Toronto 7:30 PM
Calgary at Minnesota 8:00 PM
Yo Battle! The playoffs are here and now. All of these games should provide spectacular action and excitement! How much would you pay for all of these games? WAIT! Don't answer yet because there's more!
Vancouver at Colorado 9:00 PM
NOW HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY! Ok I'm losing it. You really can't go wrong as far as hockey tonight. Most of the games have playoff consequences. Enjoy!
The Eastern Conference is tearing a page from the Western Conference regular season finish last year, as 5 teams battle for the final 2 playoff spots.
The New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and New York Islanders are all separated by one point in the Standings. Huge wins last night for the Leafs and the Habs have them tied for 8th in the Eastern Conference with the Carolina Hurricanes. In fact all five of these teams have been battling so hard for their playoff lives, that they now have the Tampa Bay Lightning in sight, who site 6th in the East with 84 points.
The Toronto Maple Leafs moved into 8th place after an emotional yet close match against the New Jersey Devils. The last time the teams met, Tomas Kaberle was lost for an indefinite period after an apparent late hit by Devils tough guy Cam Janssen. The Leafs Wade Belak and Devils Cam Janssen had themselves an old fashioned donnybrook.... they are actually still fighting now. After quenching their thirst for revenge the Leafs got down to business and collected their two points for the win, by defeating the Devils 2-1. Goaltender Andrew Raycroft bested Martin Brodeur by one save, as they both faced 25 shots, and Leafs Captain Mats Sundin added two assists on the night for his 900th point in the blue and white. Congrats Mats..... that rhymes! I'm good. Sundin has been a point streak of late, so if you in the fantasy playoffs, make certain you are starting him.
The Habs followed suit, and collected a much needed two points over the Boston Bruins (who are also fighting for a playoff spot, but are rapidly losing ground) with a 1-0 victory. Montreal Canadiens rookie goaltender Jaroslav Halak made 30 saves for his first NHL shutout, and rookie forward Guillaum Latendresse scored the lone goal and game winner late in the second to complete the win. One of the scary things about the Canadiens this season has been their lack of offense. Do you realize their leading goal scorer is defenceman Sheldon Souray with 24 goals? Scarier still, is that he is so focused on his goal scoring for his team that his defensive responsibilities have been neglected, and has collected a -23 rating for the year. I love defenseman that score (that sounds questionable) but not at the cost of defense. I digress... in any case the Habs are keeping pace with the East's playoff hungry and are now tied for 8th.
The Calgary Flames had a fire lit under them last night. It's called the Colorado Avalanche. With their lead in the standings diminishing, the Flames took it to the Detroit Red Wings last night (who are tied for the second best record in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres, and just a point shy of the Nashville Predators who own the one spot with 100 points) for the 2-1 win. Goaltender Dominik Hasek attempted to draw a penalty with some theatrics but failed, and it cost him and the Wings a goal. What's funny is his explanation:
'Somebody bumped me in the head, I don't know it if was my teammate or their player, and I fell down on my back,'' the 42-year-old goaltender said. ''I was a little bit confused, I didn't know what was going on and before I got up, they scored that goal.'' (from TSN.ca)
and Red Wings Coach Mike Babcocks retort:
'It wasn't interference at all. Our goalie tried to draw the penalty and he dove and they shot it in the net,'' Babcock said bluntly. ''The bottom line is embellishment is something that happens in our games, probably too much, and when you try and draw a penalty and they shoot it in our net, it's a tough one.'' (from TSN.ca)
Ummm, Dominik me thinks you are lying sir. Anyway, he cost his team a win that could have propelled them into first for the Presidents Trophy Race. Flames keeper Miikka Kiprusoff made 30 saves to complet the 2-1 win and cushioned their lead on the Avs to 6 points. Good news (maybe) for the Red Wings as forward Todd Bertuzzi (please excuse my Bertuzzi as he is still wearing his Florida lid) may make an appearance for his new team on Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets. A little fine tuning prior to the playoffs perhaps?
Game of the Night:
Nashville at Vancouver 10:00 PM
The big boys in the West throw down tonight, as the Central Division and league leading Predators try to stay ahead of the Wings by defeating the Northwest Division leading Canucks who are also trying to stave off the Minnesota Wild (who have won 7 straight games by the way.... which is sweet, because I picked up Wild goaltender Nicklas Backstrom and he has been HUUUGE for me.... and he's helped the Wild a bit too). Enjoy the games brothers and sisters of the face pelt!
What happened yesterday? Defense was thrown out the window and goaltending..... well there wasn't much of that to be found on the ice either.
Let's start off with the biggest shocker. Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils may have delivered the worst game of his life yesterday afternoon. The Carolina Hurricanes pounded the future Hall of Famer for 4 goals on 12 shots, and he was immediately pulled in favor of backup goaltender Scott Clemmensen, who allowed 3 more. The Hurricanes defeated the Devils 7-2 and moved into sole possession of the 7th seed in the East. The good news for New Jersey is that when Brodeur falters like this, he rebounds rapidly and for lengthy periods of time. Expect several shutouts next week.
Tell me the New York Islanders aren't missing Rick DiPietro. Since he's been out with a neck injury the Islanders have allowed 18 goals in three games. Backup goaltender Mike Dunham gave up 6 goals on 33 shots last night to the Florida Panthers. Panthers keeper Ed Belfour didn't fare much better but fortunately for him, he only allowed 5. The Panthers won the game 8-5, as captain Olli Jokinen scored a pair in the third to break the game open and help his team into 12th place with 73 points, just 6 points out of the playoffs. The Islanders, unable to keep pace are now tied for 9th, with Toronto and Montreal with 78 points.
At Madison Square Garden, the Bruins had a rough evening last night as well. They started off the game looking good, peppering New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist with 13 shots in the first.... till the wheels came flying off in the second. Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas was yanked after giving up three consecutive goals and was replaced by Joey MacDonald..... who let in four more, and was replaced by Thomas..... everyone got that? The Ranger defeated the Bruins 7-0 and took control of the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference. Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves on the evening for his 6th career shutout.
In Phoenix (thats pronounced PUH - HO - Nixx), Curtis Joseph was lit up for 6 goals as the Colorado Avalanche had their way with him and the Coyotes. Captain Joe Sakic scored two goals, as did rookie Paul Stastny, who is really starting to give Pittsburgh Penguins rookie Evgeni Malkin a run for the Calder Trophy. The Avalanche won the game 6-3 and continued their recent playoff push. They are now 6 points out of the playoffs behind the Calgary Flames.
Dominik Hasek and the Detroit Red Wings had an off evening as well. Usually the Red Wings don't allow more than 20 shots, and in some case less than 15. The rest Hasek takes care of. The Vancouver Canucks launched 38 at the Red Wings keeper, and put three past him (wasnt' there a game earlier in the season where they were only able to put 11 shots in total on net the entire game?). The Canucks won the game 4-1 on a 33 save performance by Roberto Luongo and kept their control of the Northwest Division over Minnesota by 1 point. Detroits loss combined with Nashville's win dropped them back into 4th place in the West but still with the second best record in the League.
Game of the Night:
Ottawa at Pittsburgh 7:30 PM
The last time these two teams faced off it was awesome! Ottawa had the game in hand, so I turned it off. Pittsburgh of course waited till they knew I wasn't watching and came back to win the game in the shootout. I'd expect a similiar offensive treat. Enjoy the games!
Home and home. Win and win for the Detroit Red Wings over the Nashville Predators. For the second straight game the Wings defeated the Predators last night 4-2 and captured another 2 points from their division and conference rivals. With those 4 points secured in the last two games, the Detroit Red Wings took sole possesion over the Central Division lead, control of the Western Conference, and now boast the best record (by way of points) in the league.
Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler (sorry boys, I don't have a portrait of the lad thus far) had a big night for his team potting two goals, including the game winner, while Nicklas Lidstrom and Kirk Maltby bookended his goals to complete the win. Dominik Hasek was in net once again, making 27 saves on the night. Detroit has owned the Predators this season defeating them 5 times now in regulation and will play them once more at the end of March.
Quick Shave:
The Pittsburgh Penguins are proving they can play with the best, and I don't think they will be the cake-walk in the post season that many predict they will be. After defeating the Sabres last night, the Pens shutout and shutdown the New Jersey Devils to the tune of a 3-0 win. Backup goalie Jocelyn Thibault made 25 saves for the shutout win. The Penguins are now just 4 points shy of the Devils and are challenging their lead for the Atlantic Division, and 6 points behind the Buffalo Sabres for the Eastern Conference lead. Who saw that? Bosh did.
Game of the Night:
NY Islanders at Ottawa 7:30 PM
This is a pretty big game, and a lot of eyes will be on Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro who will be a game time decision for his club. The Islanders are teetering precariously close to the edge of not making the post season, and they will need him in net to stop the Ottawa Senators whose Heatley / Spezza line, which has been lethal. They both are carrying some ridiculous point scoring streaks right now..... will they continue. If Dunham is in net, absolutely. Enjoy the games!
Remember last season, when the Oilers made it into the playoffs on the final day of the regular season? While they've claimed to be in playoff mode since the All Star Break, they look as though they are actually beginning to walk the walk now.
Last night the Oilers defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the shootout 4-3, on the lone score from forward Ryan Smyth. Smyth also scored during regulation for the Oilers, who have now won two in a row, and as noted, look like they are beginning their climb to the post season. This time it may be a bit more difficult. I read in the Hockey News that the Oilers final 6 games of the season will be on the road since the city of Edmonton is hosting the World Curling Championships. Tough break..... but curling is pretty cool.
The loss was the first for the Red Wings at home in 13 games. Henrik Zetterberg did score, and appears curse free boys.
The Oilers sit in 9th place in the Western Conference, just 5 points behind the Calgary Flames who sit in 8th. In reality if the Oilers can string a few wins together, they could challenge Vancouver for first place in the Northwest, and the current third seed in the West. The Northwest is anyones to win right now. Vancouver (76 points) holds a narrow 3 point lead over the Minnesota Wild (73 points), and the Calgary Flames (71 points), and Edmonton Oilers (66 points) are trailing closely behind. It's a longshot but even the Colorado Avalanche (62 points) can pull off a shocker.
Quick Shave:
The Boston Bruins made a pretty big statement last night. Their win over the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-2 not only brought them 5 points out of a playoff spot, but may keep their current roster in tact. The Bruins tied with the New York Rangers now, are one of 8 teams battling for 4 spots. The Eastern Conference is going to be like the West was last season right down to the wire. If the Dallas Stars begin to collapse in the playoffs because of Marty Turco's play, how quick to you think Coach Tippett will yank him in favor of rookie Mike Smith? Smith made 24 saves last night to help take down the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 last night and helped bring the Stars within 5 points of the Atlantic Division leading Ducks. Smith started his 3rd in 7 games, and has won 4 out of his last 5. Tippett claims to be playing Smith more to keep Turco fresh for the playoffs, but I see a hidden agenda. Turco has never been stellar in the post season, actually he's been terrible. Maybe Tippett is trying to get Smith as much experience as possible leading up to the playoffs, in case Turco falls apart again? We'll see.
Game of the Night:
Buffalo at Ottawa 7:00 PM
Carolina at Atlanta 7:00 PM
Detroit at Nashville 8:00 PM
San Jose at Calgary 10:00 PM
My buddy Jeff is coming over tonight, and here's what we'll be watching. Everyone one of these games looks great, and after a few brews, I'm sure they will look that much better. Enjoy the games my friends!
Is there a hotter player in the NHL right now than Henrik Zetterberg? I think not. Within the last month HZ has 26 points (13 goals, 13 assists) is a +10 rating, and 6 of his goals are game winners!
While his stats aren't at the top of the NHL yet, his reunion with Pavel Datsyuk has been a huge success. Zetterberg may not contend for league MVP, but he is clearly the Detroit Red Wings best player, especially in 2007. In 61 games this season, he has 66 points (32 goals, 34 assists), and is a + 28 rating.
Last night, Zetterberg continued his dominant performance by scoring a pair of goals in the third period to lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 last night. Datsyuk also scored and setup Zetterberg's game winner.
Quick Shave:
The San Jose Sharks finally won a game last night! Barely. The Sharks managed to escape with a 3-2 shootout win over the Washington Capitals. The victory was their first in three games, and will perhaps help them right the ship for their post season run.
Game of the Night:
New Jersey at NY Rangers 7:00 PM
Ottawa at Buffalo 7:30 PM
Toronto at NY Islanders 7:30 PM
Montreal at Nashville 8:00 PM
Playoffs! Playoffs! Playoffs! Playoffs! Playoffs! Playoffs! Wow are these games serious or what!?!? Enjoy the games my friends!
I have to apologize to everyone in Detroit. The Red Wings lost last night because of the Captain's Curse. We made light of it, and joked about it, but I think now we all realize that Bosh is a bad luck charm, and one that should not be trifled with.
The Philadelphia Flyers pounded the Detroit Red Wings last night 6-1. Let me say that again. The Philadelphia Flyers pounded the Detroit Red Wings last night 6-1. Former Flyers Captain Keith Primeau who was forced to retire due to post concussion symptom (which could be beneficial since he may not remember much of this season) was honored last night during the pre-game, and then honored again by his former team mates as they put on a performance most have not seen since last season. Peter Forsberg scored the game winner late in the game, and the flood gates opened as the Flyers scored 4 more unanswered goals to rout the visiting Red Wings. The Flyers also scored two short handed goals, one of which included R.J. Umberger beating Lidstrom.....if that's not a curse...I don't know what is.
Quick Shave:
With the trade deadline rapidly approaching, we are seeing more and more deals come across the table, and the names involved in those transactions are also becoming bigger, more well known players. Yesterday, the Phoenix Coyotes traded forward Ladislav Nagy to the Dallas Stars for a first round pick, and forward Mathias Tjarnqvist. Philadelphia Flyers forward Peter Forsberg and owner Ed Snider have met to discuss his future with the club, and the NHL. Results of their meeting on Sunday have not been disclosed, but Forsberg is currently very sought after right now. Scouts from 8 different clubs were in attendance at tonight's game.
Game of the Night:
NY Islanders at Toronto 7:30 PM
This one probably would have been a lot more interesting if Peca wasn't out for the season.... but there has always been some bad blood between these two teams. Now they are both fighting for the same playoff spot in the East, so this game should be extra nasty. Enjoy the games!
Congratulations Jeff and Paul. The Red Wings are superior.
Yet again, another New York team surrenders a multi-goal lead in the third period to the Detroit Red Wings, and ultimately blows an easy two points. Last week the Red Wings entered the third period down by 3 goals to the New York Islanders.....and well they blew their DiPietro's off and took the game by scoring 65 goals in 3 seconds. I exaggerate slightly. The point is, the Isles were lax, and their complacent play led to a quick turn around by the Wings and an eventual win.
Did the Rangers learn anything from this? Of course not. They carried a very similiar 3-1 lead over the Red Wings into the third, and pretty much followed the Islanders script to the letter. Once Jiri Hudler scored to draw the Red Wings within a goal I knew the game was lost. Hudler hustled to block a clearing attempt by Henrik Lundqvist behind the net, and scored an akward wrap-around goal (wasn't this goal eerily similiar to the one Brind'Amour scored on Ty Conklin and the Edmonton Oilers in Game 1 of the finals?). Robert Lang tied the match midway through the third, and Henrik Zetterberg potted the game winner roughly two minutes later......and the Red Wings left New York victorious 4-3.
Prior to the game, the Rangers made a deal with the Los Angeles Kings (who are selling everything right now) to acquire forward Sean Avery, and John Seymour for forward Jason Ward and prospects Marc-Andre Cliche, and Jan Marek. I doubt Avery is solution to the center issues the Rangers are trying to solve, and perhaps thought they needed some more enthusiasm.....which I'm sure he will provide. Avery is having a decent season offensively collecting 28 points this season through 55 games.
Game of the Night:
Buffalo at Atlanta 7:00 PM
Anaheim at San Jose 10:30 PM
Clash of the Titans tonight eh? The Best of East meet, and the Best of the West face off tonight. How cool is that? The correct answer is very cool. Enjoy the games!
Ok, that's a lame catch phrase, but the Red Wings refuse to pass the torch to the new rising upstarts of the league. Didn't everyone talk about the Red Wings being finished prior to the start of last season? All they did was win the President's Trophy. Granted their playoff hopes were dashed early, but this year things appear to be different. This year they have Dominik Hasek.
Red Wing forward Henrik Zetterberg opened the scoring for Detroit and helped his team keep pace with the Predators.....his second goal also chased Tomas Vokoun from net in favor of backup Chris Mason. The Predators answered back quickly, but it would be the last time they would do so in the game. The Red Wings tied the game at 3 a piece and then never looked back, defeating the Predators 5-3. Dominik Hasek had a human night, allowing 3 goals on 17 shots, but he didn't need to be spectacular. Zetterberg finished the night with 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist), and linemate Pavel Datsyuk had 4 assists.
With last night's victory over their division rivals, the Nashville Predators, the Detroit Red Wings (65 points) have pulled within 2 points of the Central Division lead, and 3 points from the top seed in the Western Conference.
Quick Shave:
It had to end sometime. The Phoenix Coyotes win streak ended at 6 games last night as they fell to the Colorado Avalanche 4-3 last night. In fairness to the Yotes, they almost pulled off the comeback. Down 4-1 midway through the third, Doan and Zigomanis scored to give the Avs a bit of a scare....but newly crowned starting goaltender Peter Budaj, (his 10th straight start) made 26 saves to complete the win. The Dallas Stars defeated the Calgary Flames 4-2 last night. Joel Lundqvist (New York Ranger's goaltender Henrik Lundqvist's twin brother) scored his first ever NHL goal in the game. The Buffalo Sabres hammered the Boston Bruins 6-3 last night. Bruins defenceman Phil Kessel, who recently returned to lineup after cancer surger, had is first ever career 2 goal game. New York Rangers forward Martin Straka who is having a career season was rewarded with a contract extension for next season, that will pay him $3.3 million.
Game of the Night:
Vancouver at Ottawa 7:30 PM
Both of these teams are hot right now, and tonights game should be one heck of a collision! Enjoy the games!
The Columbus Blue Jackets may have stole a win in Columbus the other night over the Red Wings. The Red Wings made sure that wouldn't happen again.
Year in and year out, the Red Wings always manage to ice a competitive team, and this season is no different. Bouncing back from a Monday night 4-3 loss against the same Blue Jackets the Red Wings thundered home a victory. Dominik Hasek who was yanked in Monday's loss, responded with 27 saves for the 73rd shutout of the season.....just kidding, of his career. Dan Cleary scored two early goals for the Wings in the first and that was all they would need to take the victory. However Lidstrom (who also had an assist), Maltby, and Williams also scored to take the 5-0 win, from a much improved Columbus Blue Jackets club. By the way, when did the Blue Jackets pick up Ty Conklin?
Quick Shave: Nashville Predators forward Paul Kariya scored both goals for his team last and backup goalie Chris Mason made 28 saves to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 last night. Martin Havlat recorded the lone tally for the Hawks. Predators forward Jason Arnott is back in the lineup again, so you fantasy owners can take him off IR. He has 18 points (7 goals, 11 assists) and is a +5 in 21 games this season. The Dallas Stars appear to have themselves a case of Devil-itis. They can't score goals anymore. In fairness however, not many teams are scoring against Jean Sebastien Giguere and the Anaheim Ducks this season (except for those Panthers!). Anaheim forward Corey Perry scored a pair, and the Ducks chased Dallas goalie Marty Turco for the 4-1 win last night. The Ottawa Senators are apparently fighting amongst themselves. Literally. Sens forwards Chris Neil and Antoin Vermette had themselves a scrap yesterday during practice. Ottawa has dropped their last five games. Was I right in saying it was too early to get excited about them? Perhaps. The Philadelphia Flyers, have traded center Randy Robitaille to the New York Islanders for Mike York. Pretty good move for the Flyers, and horrible Christmas present for Mike York, who goes from one of the best teams in the East, to quite possibly the worst in the NHL.
Game of the Night:
Buffalo at Nashville 8:00 PM
Even without Tomas Vokoun, the Nashville Predators are still winning. Backup Chris Mason, and the rest of the Preds have done a nice job. Is this the best team in the league that no one talks about or what? The Predators are in 2nd place in the Western Conference, and have a 5 point cushion over the 2nd place Red Wings in the Central. These guys are awesome and no one talks about them. Except for Bosh. Let's give them some love as they face the Eastern Conference best Buffalo Sabres tonight. I'll do you one better. Predators rookie Alexander Radulov will join the HTC and put three past Miller tonight. Done and Done! Enjoy the games!
The Calgary Flames have now won 6 in a row. Last night's victory over the Detroit Red Wings was punctuation mark on the win streak, that began several weeks ago, following a loss to the very same team. The Red Wings have been on a tear of their own this season, winning nine in a row prior to last night's 4-1 loss.
Miika Kipprusoff made 29 saves against the Red Wings and the Flames scored 4 goals on 25 shots. Their last meeting, the Flames only managed 13 shots on net....and their offense, was, well offensive. The Flames received scoring from Kristian Huselius, Matthew Lombardi, Daymond Langkow and sophomore defenceman Dion Phaneuf. The Calder Trophy runner up is having a great season for the Flames. Phaneuf has scored 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) and is a +10 through 17 games this season.
Quick Shave:
Since setting an NHL record for most points to start a season before a regulation loss, the Anaheim Ducks have surrendered victories to two of the NHL's bottom feeders. Firstly, their 7-4 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers several nights ago, and last night's loss the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks defeated the Ducks 4-3, as Nikolai Khabibulin made 42 saves, returning from a broken finger that saw him miss the last 9 games. Markus Naslund potted a pair to help the Vancouver Canucks get off a three game losing streak by defeating the St. Louis Blues 4-2. Former first round pick, and first player selected ever by the Atlanta Thrashers, Patrik Stefan returned to his former home and helped the Dallas Stars to a 5-3 win. Stefan recorded a goal and two assists in the victory. Maxim Afinogenov returned to the lineup for the Buffalo Sabres, much to the dismay of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Afinogenov had a goal and an assist and led the Sabres to a 4-2 win. Columbus, hire Hitchcock now! The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the Colorado Avalanche 3-0, as backup Peter Budaj made 25 saves to get the shutout.
Quick Shave:
Dallas at Carolina 7:00 PM
Do I really need to explain this one? The Stars are playing really well (unless I'm jinxing them when the play the Isles), and Cam Ward and the Hurricanes are back to their Stanley Cup Winning form. This should be a great matchup! Enjoy the games!
After losing three straight on the road, the Red Wings have bounced back hard. Ending their losing streak by defeating Western powerhouse San Jose, the Red Wings continued to reaffirm they are team to be reckoned with by defeating another conference giant in the Dallas Stars 4-3.
Captain Niklas Lidstrom recorded his first two goals of the season, and Jiri Hudler and Pavel Datsyuk also scored to help the Wings to the win over Dallas. Goalie Dominik Hasek stopped 17 shots on the night, while counterpart Marty Turco saved 29 of the 33 he faced. The Detroit victory was Dallas' first home loss of the season. Certainly a punctuation mark that the Wings aren't done, and are perhaps beginning to round into form, like many of the other teams that got off to a bad start.
Quick Shave:
I think I figured out part of the problem in Columbus. The Columbus Blue Jackets take a lot of really bad penalties, and seem to give away 5-3 powerplays to their opponents like it's 'dozen egg night' at Beers Stadium. Luckily for the Blue Jackets, the L.A. Kings were unable to capitalize on any of their power play opportunities in large part due to the amazing goaltending of Pascal Leclaire. Leclaire stopped all 38 shots he faced last night. The Minnesota Wild's latest victim was the Anaheim Ducks whom they defeated 3-2 by way of shootout last night. Brian Rolston is a scoring machine this season, potting his 9th of the season, and helping the Wild remain undefeated on home ice. The fun part about watching the Wild is how they generate their offence. The team often starts by collecting a turnover in their own end, and a wall of green jersey's then rush the ice. They seem to swarm their opponents, and don't really look like the typical Jacque Lemaire trapping team anymore. Olaf Kolzig stopped 42 shots last night but it still wasn't enough to help the Washington Capitals defeat the Vancouver Canucks last night. Vancouver beat the Caps 3-2 in the shootout. Kolzig has been impressive this season, almost always facing over 30 shots a game....and in many cases 40+. Sergei Samsonov.....oh boy. A week after I dropped him from my fantasy lineup, the Habs followed suit, by demoting the thus far useless free agent acquisition to the fourth line. It appears he may soon be seeking a trade.....but who'd be willing to pony the salary cap room for him? Yanic Perrault may be close to rejoining the NHL. Three teams have expressed interest in the face-off specialist.
Game of the Night:
Pittsburgh at Philadelphia 7:00 PM
Nashville at Calgary 10:00 PM
I love watching the Penguins, and if you haven't seen them yet, now's the time. This is the team of the future, but they are playing like that future is now. Philadelphia, which got spanked by the Pens in their first meeting 4-0, are still listing, but showed some signs of life against the Thrashers a few nights ago in capturing their second win. Crosby has owned the Flyers in his young career, so look for him to light them up tonight, along side his new linemate Evgeni Malkin. The Preds / Flames game looks like it could be fun on paper, and because it's a late game, you should have little excuse not to watch both GOTN's! Enjoy the games my bearded friends!
Little shakin', little tenderizin', ....down you go
The San Jose Sharks are beginning to realize their potential this season, and are lining up the giants of the West and knocking them down one by one. Just two nights removed from shutting out the undefeated Dallas Stars, 2-0, the Sharks took advantage of a penalty filled game to score 5 power play goals, and win their sixth game over the Detroit Red wings 5-1.
Joe Thornton who had been quiet for a few games finally hit paydirt (thank you! he's my first rounder in one league!) by setting up winger Jonathan Cheechoo on the powerplay, and assisting on another. Patrick Marleau had two goals on the night (and seems to be blossoming in his second line center position), as did Milan Michalek, Mark Bell, and the aforementioned Cheechoo.
The Sharks have been platooning the goaltending between Vesa Toskala and Evgeni Nabokov since the start of the season. Both have responded well to the every other game starts. Nabokov has already pitched to shutouts, and Toskala responded last night by making 21 saves against the Red Wings.
Quick Shave:
As if things couldn't get worse for the Philadelphia Flyers. After watching 13 goals go by them in the last two games, and three of their own get sent down to the farm, they lost captain Peter Forsberg to a wrist injury for at least the next game. This was bound to happen sooner or later. Or sooner than later. The Flyers were dismantled by the Lightning 4-1 last night and don't appear to show any signs of life. The Pittsburgh Penguins and their young guns Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin stole a game from the Islanders in OT last night 4-3. Malkin scored his second goal of the season, in his second game of the season and just looks special out there. Crosby had three assists on the night. The New York Islanders have looked solid with Mike Dunham in net and for the fourth straight game have managed to secure a point in the standings. I think these guys are gonna be alright.....but what happens when DiPietro returns? Whats up with the Ottawa Senators? This is the biggest shock that has been quietly swept under the carpet....until now!!! BOSH is draggin' it back out. The Senators have lost 4 straight, and what's worse....they can't score. Dany Heatley got his first goal last night. First goal? He, Daniel Alfreddson, and Jason Spezza have been scarily quiet. There are rumors that GM John Muckler is looking into acquiring Yanic Perrault (from Hockey Night in Canada, and Spector on the Face Off Hockey Show), but I'm not sure that he will be the panacea for this team. Another team up north, the Calgary Flames are having a rough start too. Still unable to find the offence they long for, they are now having trouble getting the same goaltending they got a season ago from Vezina winner Miikka Kiprusoff.
Game of the Night:
Carolina at Buffalo 8:00 PM
Oh hell yeah! Rematch of the season opener and I think the Hurricanes will be ready. If anyone can topple the monsters from West New York its the boys from Raleigh! Enjoy the games!!!
The Phoenix Coyotes still don't know what hit them last night. Meeting the Detroit Red Wings at home in Joe Louis Arena, the Coyotes were dismantled by defenceman Mathieu Schneider who exploded for 3 goals and a assist.
The Wings also recorded goals from Mikael Samuelsson, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Jason Williams, and Tomas Holmstrom (i think i got a goal too). The Red Wings defeated the Coyotes (who have looked horrible since their opening night win over the Islanders), by the final score of 9-2.
Quick Shave:
As predicted in the Game of the Night, the Atlanta Thrashers, and their fans welcomed Marc Savard and his new club, the Bruins home in style. The Thrashers who have been anchored by superb goaltending from Kari Lehtonen, went on to beat the Boston Bruins 4-1 last night. Whats going on with the Champs? The Carolina Hurricanes can't buy a win this year. Relieving goalie Cam Ward, John Grahame (transplanted from Tampa Bay) was lit up by the Florida Panthers who went on to defeat the reigning Stanley Cup Champs 6-3. Is Aebischer the Habs new #1? I really hope not, because I've banked on Huet in a few fantasy leagues....however, it's hard not to give this guy credit. David Aebischer shut down the Philadelphia Flyers stopping 27 shots and helping the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-1 win. Rough road trip for the Islanders to open the season. Rick DiPietro recieved a break after being shelled in his first three games in favor of backup Mike Dunham.....who likewise was shelled last night by over 50 Anaheim shots. However Dunham, was able to stifle the Ducks in the shootout where the Isles took to the game 5-4 on a goal by Mike York. This is one team that can't wait to get home.
Game of the Night:
Calgary at Ottawa 7:30 PM
San Jose at Edmonton 10:00 PM
Thursday night in the NHL is almost as good as Saturday! We have a buffet of hockey tonight, but I recommend both of these games! Calgary, who still can't score, goes up against Ottawa who is still trying to prove they are last years juggernaut. High powered offence, versus stifling defense. The second game is another playoff rematch. The Sharks look solid this year, and are still unbeaten. I heard they are the largest team in the league, by and average of 10 pounds. That is impressive when you consider how fast they are. Enjoy the games!
Crosby and company came out tonight and made Bosh look pretty good in picking them to make the playoffs this year. Yes Sidney Crosby looked great and scored a goal and an assist in the 4-0 shutout victory, but the real hero of the evening was Marc-Andre Fleury.
The Penguins were outshot 40-21 in the game, but Fleury stopped them all and even killed of two, powerplays where the Flyers carried a two man advantage. I would say this kid thrives on adversity. Having all but lost his starting job to veteran Jocelyn Thibault, Fleury was named the number 1 goalie in the Penguins final pre-season game. Fleury responded with an amazing effort, and his team finished it for him and their new prospective owner, Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie, who was in attendence and had to love what he saw.
Eric Staal's younger brother and Pittsburgh's first round draft pick Jordan Staal made his NHL debut tonight and is expected to remain with the team at least until the return of center Evgeni Malkin is able to return.
Shanahan scores his 600th in Ranger debut
The New York Rangers officially introduced forward Jaromir Jagr as the 24th captain in franchise history, and he responded by opening the scoring 29 seconds into the game. After that Shanahan made his presence known in his New York Ranger debut by potting two goals, his 599th, and 600th of his career. Shanahan becomes the 15th player to join the elite goal scorers club. The Rangers went on to defeat the Washington Capitals 5-2.
Luongo shines for Vancouver
Another debut, and another success. Roberto Luongo played his first game between the pipes for the Vancouver Canucks, stopping 27 shots and helping his new team defeat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1.
Havlat and Chicago defeat Nashville in goalfest
An evening of debuts that for the moment appear to be looking for the teams that have acquired them, continued in Nashville tonight. Chicago's newest forward Martin Havlat scored 2 goals and 2 asssist in his Blackhawks debut, and helped Chicago come from behind twice to defeat the Predators in a wild 8-6 win.
Islanders fall hard in Phoenix
Ok, not all debuts were easy one's tonight. Ted Nolan's return to coaching after nearly a decade is one he would probably like to forget. The Islanders $65 million dollar goalie Rick DiPietro was lit up early and often by the Coyotes who went on to defeat their New York counterparts 6-3. DiPietro was eventually pulled in favor of his backup Mike Dunham who started the third. Wayne Gretzky's team looked good at even strength and on the powerplay, and forwards Doan, Nagy and Reinprecht were all over the scoresheet.
The Late Game!
I don't want you West Coasters not to feel the love from the Bosher, so I stayed up and watched an unbelievable game between the St. Louis Blues and the San Jose Sharks. This match was back and forth with Mark Bell looking like he had sealed the game with a goal to make it 4-3 in the final minutes, but the relentless Blues kept up the attack, pulled Legace from the net, got a fortunate half-man advantage from Ville Nieminen's broken stick and tied the game on a Keith Tkachuk goal with seconds remaining. The match went to OT where Curtis Brown buried the game winner halfway through the extra period! What a game!
The first two nights have come and gone in the NHL, and I feel like the NHL Center Ice package has already paid for itself. If you haven't gotten it yet, they are running a free preview which I'm pretty sure is running till next week. Give it a look. If you are a hockey fan, this is the best investment you can make! If you order early, I think they will knock $20 off the price. Tell them Captain Bosh sent you (just so you can hear them say 'Who?').
The pre-season has been tough on a lot teams so far. Injuries are abound and the season hasn't even begun yet. So far it appears the groin is the most popular ailment. Here's a list of the wounded:
Toronto Maple Leafs
Kyle Wellwood - groin
Michael Peca - groin
Darcy Tucker - unknown
Ben Ondrus - unknown
Wade Belak - groin
Tomas Kaberle - unknown
Brendan Bell - bone bruise
San Jose Sharks
Jonathan Cheechoo - groin
Joe Thornton - bruised foot
Nashville Predators
Jason Arnott - groin
Atlanta Thrashers
Vitaly Vishnevski - groin
Steve Rucchin -groin
Buffalo Sabres
Daniel Breire - hip flexor
Carolina Hurricanes
Oleg Tverdovsky - groin
Chicago Blackhawks
Tuomo Ruutu - knee
Michal Handzus -shoulder
Mikael Holmqvist - groin
James Wisniewski - back
Dallas Stars
Eric Lindros - groin
Detroit Red Wings
Danny Markov - knee
Greg Johnson - heart (abnormal EKG)
Florida Panthers
Ville Peltonen - shoulder
Philadelphia Flyers
Antero Niittymaki - hip
Ummmm, does anyone stretch before they play hockey anymore? Come on guys! Either that or the NHL needs to look into getting some better trainers. This is ridiculous!
That's the good news. The bad news is that Pittsburgh Penguins rookie Evgeni Malkin will need six weeks to recover from the dislocated shoulder he received after a collision with teammate John LeClair. The young forward is expected to miss as much as 10 of the Penguins first games. Dissapointing yes, but if his shoulder needed to have surgery he could have missed much more, if not all of the season. Sacrificing the month of October at this point, seems a blessing for the Penguins and Malkin.
Steve Yzerman joins Wings management
The Detroit Red Wings announced yesterday that their first ballot hall of famer Steve Yzerman would become it's Vice President. The position would have him working closely with Senior Vice President Jim Devellano, GM Ken Holland and Assistant GM Jim Nill.
Sean Burke waived
The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed their goaltender Sean Burke on waivers. Burke had an awful 2005-2006 campaign and has obviously been outplayed by newly acquired goalie Marc Denis and Johan Holmqvist. Burke's $1.6 million salary will still count against Tampa Bay's cap regardless of whether he plays in the minors or chooses retirement. Unless he is picked up off of waivers by another team.....which will probably be the Red Wings once Hasek's groin detonates on the ice.
Jagr cleared to play
Good news for us! New York Rangers Jaromir Jagr has been cleared to begin full practice with his team. According to Coach Tom Renney Jagr will be included in 'all forms of practice' which includes contact drills. If all goes well perhaps he will see some ice time in the pre-season against the Islanders or Boston later this week.
The Dallas Stars have re-signed Brendan Morrow to a six year deal worth $24.6 million. The deal keeps Morrow, one of the Stars most consistent forwards in the lineup till he's 33, and prevents the possibility of losing him to Unrestricted Free Agency, which he would have been eligible for next summer.
Brendan Morrow had a career year last season scoring 65 points (23 goals and 42 assists) and still remained devoted to his defensive responsibilities posting a team high +30 rating. This is a great signing for the Stars, they hold on to one of their best home grown players who would most certainly been scooped up in free agency next year.
Malkin's status
Evgenin Malkin suffered a dislocated shoulder last night during the Penguins victory over the Flyers. He sustained the injury while colliding into teammate John LeClair. Malkin attended practice this morning, but did not participate. His team mates said he looked much better than the previous evening as he left the ice clutching his arm. His game ready status is still not known, and wheter or not he will be available for the team's season opener is still undetermined. His shoulder will be re-evaluated next week, and a clearer timeline should be made available.
No Jagr for Rangers opener?
Speaking of shoulder injuries. The New York Rangers MVP forward Jaromir Jagr is still recovering from his off season shoulder surgery and Coach Renney and staff are treating him with kid gloves. While he is being put through a rigorous exercise regimen twice daily, he has been restricted from any on ice contact drills, which include scrimmages and pre-season exhibition matches. The word is still uncertain as to whether Jagr will be activated for the home opener agains the Caps on October 5th.
Red Wings Captain to be announced at Opening Night
The Red Wings still haven't made it official and named the successor to retired Steve Yzerman. Although it's a good bet it will be mainstay blueliner Nicklas Lidstrom who just re-upped with the Red Wings for two more seasons, my boy Jeff has pointed out that Datsyuk, or Zetterberg, two of Detroit's younger and future of the franchise, may get the nod. Looks like we will all have to wait till the 5th.

I know it's early, and I know it's only pre-season, but it's nice to see the Rangers getting off on the right foot after a lackluster finish to their promising season. The Rangers came out blazing and stunned the New Jersey Devil's Martin Brodeur for 3 goals in the first 8 minutes of the game. Blair Betts, recently acquired Adam Hall (traded in a three way deal with Nashville and Pittsburgh for Dominic Moore), and youngster Brandon Dubinsky (who's efforts to make the roster are looking better by the day) recorded the tallies for the New York Rangers. Goaltenders Al Montoya and Stephen Valiquette allowed only one goal on 25 shots.
Koivu's sights are set
Even thought the Habs fell to the Bruins tonight 5-2, the team was apparently thrilled with Saku Koivu who's eye ailment did little to prevent him from playing and assisting on a goal by Michael Ryder. It would seem that Koivu has once again persevered.
Minnesota's offseason already paying dividends
Minnesota Wild forward Marion Gaborik scored two goals including the game winner to help the Wild to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings. Draft day trade acquisition, Pavol Demitra scored the other helper.
Penguins Malkin to make debut
With or without the blessing of the Russian hockey federation, Pittsburgh Penguins much travelled forward Evgeni Malkin will make his debut tonight against the Philadelphia Flyers. A lot of eyes will be on this game, and I'm certain it won't be just to check out Malkin's play.
I'm still hearing alot of power play opportunities are being given away. It looks like the clubs with discipline and / or polished special teams are going to be flying out the gates this season. One night after winning with superb power play units, Dallas did the exact opposite, and let the Colorado Avalanche showcase their special teams, scoring three. Every coach in the NHL must be losing his mind right now.

Rumor has it that the captain vacancy left by future Hall of Fame Detroit Red Wing Steve Yzerman will be filled by some very capable skates. Defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom is rumored to be the heir apparent to the Red Wings captaincy, and really who else could you choose? Like Yzerman, Lidstrom has spent his entire career with the Red Wings, and in that time put up some impressive numbers. Over his 14 season career he has played almost 1100 games, scoring 189 goals and 617 assists. Lidstrom is also coming off a Norris Trophy season, his fourth such win in the last five seasons. While no announcement has been made official, and Coach Babcock has yet to confirm the rumor, sources within the organization are saying otherwise. For more on this visit TSN.ca.
Ken Holland gambled on the gimpy groin over the gimpy back. After dismissing the notion of signing veteran goalie Ed Belfour, Detroit's GM has rested the team's hopes on veteran keeper Dominik Hasek. Hasek signed a one year contract with the Red Wings.
Hasek has been jobless since the Senators signed Martin Gerber to replace him, following a season that was going well for him till he succumbed to injuries in the first game of the Olympics in February. Hasek never appeared in uniform for the Senators again after that. He did win 28 games for the Senators and had the second best save percentage and GAA in the league.
If Hasek can remain healthy (huge IF! This is a Lindros level IF) this guy can steal games, and whole playoff series. However, we saw what happens when he gets hurt. Recovery time, at his age is extensive, and often season ending. The Red Wings should use him sparingly with Osgood, and might consider platooning them, rather than having a designated #1 and backup goalie. Overall it was a risky movie by the Red Wings, but what options did Ken Holland really have? I'm sure the trade route was considered, but much like Lamoriello is going to discover, that once your trade counterparts know you are desperate, the price climbs.
Today at 1pm, the Red Wings will hold a press conference, where lifetime Red Wing will hang up the skates after 22 seasons in the NHL. I know this is tough for Red Wings fans (especially you Jeff), but what a career this guy has had. All the best Stevie Y!
The McCabe Effect continues! Detroit has signed Norris Trophy winning defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom to a 2 year contract worth $7.6 million per and effectively keeping him off the free agent market which begins tonight at midnight. Good move by Detroit, you had to hold on to this guy, especially after the season he just had. For more on this visit TSN.ca.
For many of us, especially my buddy Jeff, the question of whether or not Steve Yzerman will retires looms overhead....
According to TSN.ca Yzerman plans to make a decision as early as next week. Yzerman will meet with Red Wings management and discuss the team's future and obviously his role with the club if there is one.
If the fire is still there, I say keep playing. However, don't pull a Hull / Lemieux and retire part way through the season.
Wings and Ducks draws even, Sens and Sharks prepare to close
Niklas Lidstrom, the heir apparent to this year's Norris Trophy, scored the game winner on a 5-3 to help the Wings beat the Oilers 4-2, and tie the series at 2 games a piece. Holstrom and Zetterberg also tallied power play goals in a game loaded with penalties. Oiler nation seems pretty pissed regarding the officiating in the third (however my buddy Jeff is a happy man today!).....for more on this visit TSN.ca.
The Senators and Lightning game looked very similiar to Game One of the series. Tight play and a very even game until Ottawa finally pounced to break the game open. Heatley, who's having a pretty good playoffs for a first timer, broke the 2-2 tie with a power play goal off a feed from Havlat. Havlat scored shortly after to give the Sens a 2 goal lead. Ottawa went on to defeat the Lightning 5-2 and take a commanding 3-1 series lead. How great has Martin Havlat been? 5 goals and 3 assists! In fact he, Spezza and Heatley have all had a great start to the playoffs. The Senators have really got some firepower up front. For more on this visit TSN.ca.
Sean O'Donnell is making me look a little smarter today for picking the Ducks over Calgary. His goal in OT last night gave the Ducks a 3-2 victory and tied the series 2-2 with the Flames. For more on this visit TSN.ca.
It looks like Joe Thornton's playoff beard will continue to flourish, thanks in large part to Patrick Marleau's outstanding play. Marleau deposited a hatrick last night against the Predators and helped the Sharks to a 5-4 win, and 3-1 series lead. For more on this visit TSN.ca.

After last evenings 2-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers, the Detroit Red Wings have clinched the President's Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
I have to say that I didn't believe the Red Wings would be one of the teams that would adjust well to the new rules. They proved me wrong. A veteran team, but a team nonetheless, and they have once again continued to dominate in this NHL. Detroit has to be considered a legitimate contender for the Stanley Cup this year, and I wouldn't be surprise to see this team emerge from the West.
With about 3 games remaining for most teams in the league, there are still some spots available. New Jersey clinched a playoff berth last night with their victory over Carolina, but the 7th and 8th spots held by Montreal and Tampa Bay are still open. Atlanta and Toronto have not been mathematically eliminated yet. In the West, 6, 7 and 8th spots held by Colorado, San Jose and Edmonton are still available. Vancouver has a legitimate chance, and Los Angeles an outside, but not very realistic shot. GOOD STUFF!
Last night's scores:
New Jersey 4 Carolina 3 F (OT) NY Islanders 3 NY Rangers 2 F
Pittsburgh 3 Philadelphia 4 F

HUGGGGE GAME!!! HUUUUUGE!!! If you don't watch this one, you are on crack......and why the hell aren't you sharing? Enjoy the games!
Steve Yzerman helped the Wings roll over the St. Louis Blues last night with a 4-1 victory. The win, clinched a playoff berth for the Wings and saw Yzerman tie one of the NHL's all time greatest players. Now 8th amongst all goal scorers, Yzerman is only 4 goals away from tying Mark Messier who sits 7th, with 694 goals. Yzerman has 11 goals, and 14 assists on the year and is +7. "It's amazing watching him still compete at such a high level, especially for a man of his years." said youngster Chris Chelios.
It was an evening of record tying last night, as Jaromir Jagr tied Adam Graves for the Rangers all time goal scorer with 52, and tied the all time Ranger points leader Vic Hadfield with 109.
Three teams have no clinched playoff spots. The Detroit.Red Wings, the Ottawa Senators, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Just kidding, the Carolina Hurricanes. I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction. Playoff Beard Prediction: 13 more teams will clinch playoff spots. You heard it here first!
Last night's scores:
Florida 4 Boston 3 F (SO)
Tampa Bay 1 Carolina 2 F
Buffalo 4 NY Rangers 5 F (SO) Detroit 4 St. Louis 1 F
Los Angeles 4 Vancouver 7 F
Game of the night:
Anaheim at Colorado 9:00 PM
The two 5th place teams in the West face off tonite! This should have a playoff type atmosphere (I know I've been using that tag a lot lately, it's like hearing Bill Clement and Gary Thorne moan on and on about how badly he wants to bed Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman, or hearing every color man say '(insert goalie' name) stood on his head') as both of these teams are trying to position themselves. Colorado with a win, can jump to third place in the West if they finish above the Flames. Anaheim is hot. Teemu Selanne is very hot! This guy is playing like his old self. SASSY! Enjoy the games!!
Since we are nearing the completion of the 2005-2006 NHL Season, I thought I would start breaking down the awards, and those who I feel will have a good chance of winning them.
The Norris trophy. Awarded to the best defenseman, and the individual with the best beard and roundhouse kick. This year we have a busload of possibilities. I'm going to give you my top three, and hopefully pick the winner (I picked Sweden to win the Gold and the Rangers to make the playoffs this year, so I'm not doing to shabby this year!!). Here are my top three, in no particular order:
Matt Schneider of the Detroit Red Wings
What a season Schneider is having. 21 goals, 31 assists, and an amazing +26. If he's on the ice, chances are he's scoring, helping someone else to score, and keeping you away from his net. He's no Mary either. Schneider has always played with a certain level of ferocity (ever since he was a Ranger, man I can understand that, cuz we were all pissed back then. Side Note....one of Sather's biggest blunders was not resigning this guy, he was a great New York Ranger), and has amassed 76 minutes in penalties. Schneider also has 25 power play points and 4 game winning goals. Fortunately Schneider is a big part of my first place fantasy squad.
Lubomir Visnovsky of the Los Angeles Kings
Visnovsky is having a stellar campaign. 17 goals, 43 assists, and a very nice +14. Visnovsky has been making his living on the power play this year with 37 points and has recorded 3 game winning goals. If you drafted him in your fantasy team this year, then you are happier than Frederica Bimmell at a seamstress convention. Visnovsky is a huge part of LA's powerhouse season.
Niklas Lidstrom
It's hard to not name this guy. Lidstrom is always up for or winning this award (he's won it 3 times (2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003)). It won't be long before we have to rename this the Lidstrom trophy. This year is no different. Lidstrom has 13 goals, and 54 assists and is a +13. He has 44 points on the power play and 2 game winning goals. If Lidstrom wins it this year, no one will be shocked. This guy is the model of consistency.
Here are a few other guys worth looking at, but I don't think they will make the final three due to weaknesses that these fellas above really don't have. Bryan McCabe is having an outstanding year point wise for the Leafs, especially on the PP, but he is a -1. Wade Redden is having a career year as well. 46 points and a +33, but his point totals don't come near my top 3. Dion Phaneuf, your years will come my man. This youngster has had an amazing season, and if not for the depth of the rookie class he'd be raising the Calder Trophy this year and having tea with Ms. MacGill. Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Sergei Zubov, and Zedeno Chara, are all playing world class hockey this year.
I think the winner is going to be a toss up between Lidstrom and Schneider. If you went on points alone you have to give it to Lidstrom, but I think Schneider has had a better all-around season. I'm going to say Matt Schneider wins the Norris Trophy. PlayoffBeard Alert: Schneider grows a beauty in the post season. His beard would make Kris Kristofferson weep, and order the roast duck with the mango salsa.
Last night's scores:
Philadelphia 4 Florida 0 F
Anaheim 1 Detroit 3 F
Columbus 2 Chicago 3 F
Game of the night:
NY Islanders at Atlanta 7:00 PM
Let's give the Islander's there due. Milbury tried to sink this team like the Andrea Doria, but they have refused to quit and are on a 4 game winning streak. Unfortunately the lost Alexei Zhitnik the other night to a broken ankle for the rest of the season but I think they are used to this kind of adversity. Atlanta wants the last playoff spot. So do the Isles. This should have a playoff type feel to it. DiPietro has been playing like a man possessed lately as well. The Olympics actually did a player good (he played for USA so in fairness their was plenty of time to rest). Enjoy the games!
Calgary Flames acquire Jamie Lundmark from the Phoenix Coyotes for a draft pick.
Vancouver Canucks acquire Eric Weinrich from the Blues for a prospect and a pick.
Phoenix Coyotes acquire Oleg Kvasha from the Islanders for a third round pick.
Dallas Stars acquire defenceman Willie Mitchell and a 2007 2nd round pick from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for defenceman Martin Skoula and Shawne Belle.
Philadelphia Flyers acquire forward Nikos Dimitrakos from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for a third round draft pick.
Colorado Avalanche acquire forward Jim Dowd from the Blackhawks in exchange for a fourth round pick.
Ottawa Senators acquire forward Tyler Arnason from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Brandon Bochenski and a pick.
Edmonton Oilers acquire forward Sergei Samsonov from the Boston Bruins in exchange for forward Marty Reasoner, a second round pick and a minor league player.
Atlanta Thrashers acquire defenceman Steve McCarthy from the Canucks in exchange for a condition pick in 2007.
Detroit Red Wings acquire defenceman Cory Cross from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a fourth rounder.
Nashville Predators acquire Brendan Witt from the Caps in exchange for a first round pick and forward Kris Beech.
New York Rangers acquire defenceman Sandis Ozolinsh from the Ducks in exchange for a third round pick.
Phoenix Coyotes acquire defencemen Jamie Rivers from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a seventh round pick in 2007.
Damn! A whole lotta action! I'll give you guys some breakdowns, plus winners and losers tomorrow!
