What an absolutely amazing playoffs. Every round showcased an unprecedented level of play... and playoff beards.
The religion of the playoff beard continues to gain followers both on and off the ice as the faithful pay tribute and honor to our Lord and Savior Chuck Norris.
Once again the Detroit Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins found themselves locked in battle for the Stanley Cup and perhaps the most coveted of all prizes... the Chuck Norris Trophy.
The Red Wings appear to have a team mandate that anyone caught shaving will be fined and sent to their AHL affiliate. Detroit's playoff beards were brilliant as always (this team actually has a trainer who specializes in maintaining their chin mullets) led by the likes of Henrik Zetterberg, Dan Cleary, Tomas Holstrom and even the snake bitten Marian Hossa. This is an organization that will one day topple Gillette.
However in this Stanley Cup Final sequel, the Pittsburgh Penguins turned out to have just a goatee more playoff beard depth and that would prove to be the difference. Prior to their successful Cup run, the Penguins aquired forwards Bill Guerin and Kris Kunitz to bolster their offence and playoff beard strength. Guerin's playoff beard was a thing of glory. Lightly seasoned with some gray, Guerin's chin was enough to make the Executives at Just For Men salivate. The Beard was also strong with Maxime Talbot (Talbot's playoff beard was one of Bosh's favorites, but ultimately he fell just short) who provided grit, and timely scoring, including a pair in Game 7 that would lift the Penguins to the Stanley Cup Championship. While captain Sidney Crosby has yet to hit puberty (he's still only 15 years old afterall) his effort was admirable... although he is in danger of sporting of the Officer Friesen if he isn't careful in the future.
Much like the Conn Smythe Trophy, the winner of the Chuck Norris Trophy can only be presented to a member of the Stanley Cup winner (yeah I know about J.S. Giguere.... enough already, Brodeur got robbed that year).
Credited for a short-handed goal in game 4 that many experts believed turned the Stanley Cup Finals around for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Jordan Staal raised his level of play and beard. Staal not only sported a spectacular Pennsylvania-Dutch style playoff beard (perhaps to honor the fans native to his club's region) but was able to best Red Wings defenceman Brian Rafalski one on one and deposit the shortie past goaltender Chris Osgood. The Penguins came to life and captured the game 4-2 and went on to achieve victory. Staal's playoff beard was artwork. A finely woven scarf of man-fur that gently cradled his face, providing warmth and creating fear in his opponents (see Rafalski above). Perhaps the most amazing thing about Jordan Staal's playoff beard is that he is only 20 years of age. Can you imagine what this kid will look like at age 30? The potential for a part in a Star Wars movie is unlimited. That being said...
Please join me in congratulating Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jordan Staal as our 2008-2009 Chuck Norris Trophy winner for best playoff beard!
Congratulations Jordan. See you next beard!

The phenomenon, or philosophy rather of the playoff beard continues to grow, and it seems like more and more of the faithful are joining the flock.
Playoff beards were everywhere. Players and fans alike. Gillette tried to get in on the action by promoting their products as playoff beard enhancements ( which makes about as much sense as washing my car with 80 grade sandpaper). As backwards as their promotion was, they should see a spike in the stock prices as the razors can finally come out, and attempt to do battle with some of the thickest facial undergrowth we've ever seen.
Both the Penguins and Red Wings showcased some amazing playoff beards. For the Pens, it's difficult not to point out Ryan Malone, Maxime Talbot, Marian Hossa, and even a pre-pubescent Sidney Crosby was starting to look like Zorro towards the end of the finals. However... the Red Wings achieved peace through superior playoff beard. It is a rule of mine that the Norris Trophy can only go to a winner of the Stanley Cup and that is the standard I've used for the past 2 years, and this season is no different. Doing otherwise would be like handing the Conn Smythe to Jean-Sebastien Giguere while the New Jersey Devils celebrated winning the Stanley Cup... ooops.
The Red Wings Playoff Beard Corps were nothing short of spectacular. Holstrom. Maltby. Zetterberg. The list goes on and on. But one man stood above and beyond the call of the playoff beard.
Not only did he bring his standard issue chin mullet to the finals and help his club to another Stanley Cup final, but this man did his finest impersonation of the red bearded G.I. Joe Arctic Trooper Snow Job (that's Snow...). While this certainly helped push him past his competition, I must be honest, that my decision was almost finalized before the series started (provided he and the Wings won). The reason for this individual becoming Bosh's early favorite? He looks like Chuck Norris. The man could be his stunt double. It almost made me weep.... and I assure you, that if Chuck Norris layed eyes upon this particular beard.... he would cry as well. But as you all know, Norris is incapable of crying. All that being said...
Please join me in congratulating Detroit Red Wings forward Kris Draper as our 2007-2008 Chuck Norris Trophy winner for best playoff beard!
Congratulations Kris. See you next beard!

Are the Phoenix Coyotes going to make it to the playoffs this year?
If they do, Coyotes captain Shane Doan is ready. Doan is sporting the latest in playoff beard fashion, as he and his club are already in playoff mode... battling for that 8th and final spot in the Western Conference.
Doan scored a goal, and along with some superb goaltending by Ilya Bryzgalov defeated the Dallas Stars 2-1 and helped inch closer to a playoff berth. The Coyotes are just 3 points shy of the Colorado Avalanche and the Nashville Predators who hole the 7th and 8th place spots in the West.
Doan tallied his 20th of the season last night and now has 63 points on the year. He also has a playoff beard worthy of mention.
Congratulations to the Phoenix Coyote's Shane Doan for being being the Playoff Beard of the Month for February!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
This one is pretty much a no-brainer.
The Colorado Avalanche's right wing, and enforcer Scott Parker has one of the finest playoff beards this side of George Parros. While the NHL enforcer is a position that has come under much scrutiny over past few seasons (by a bunch of nancy's that wish to take the man out of our game), Parker works nightly to not only fill his role on the club, but also provide the Avalanche with outstanding Playoff Beard depth.
Congratulations to the Colorado Avalanche's Scott Parker for being being the Playoff Beard of the Month for November!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
It's that time of the year folks! Playoff Beard of the Month time!
So who is the first to land this coveted prize? Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin. His playoff beard while still in it's infancy, show's remarkable potential, and the recent facial hair accumulation has also been accompanied by some stellar play. Ovechkin in 11 games this season has collected 15 points (8 goals, 7 assists) and is a +3 rating. It has to be the beard. In any case, please join me in congratulating our Playoff Beard of the Month Winner for October, Alexander Ovechkin!
Quick Shave:
Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron will likely miss a month of action after sustaining a concussion from a hit Saturday afternoon. Bergeron went into the boards low, and was checked from behind by Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Randy Jones (who was subsequently suspended for 2 games, which I think was the right call by Campbell.... Jones was not trying to injure Bergeron, and is clearly not cut from the same cloth his teammates Downey and Boulerice are) and as a result bounced his face across the dasher, which knocked him unconcious. The Detroit Red Wings are an amazing club. I don't think they know how to lose. Can anyone remember a time when you could honestly say "The Red Wings Suck!" and actually mean it (without secretly pining away wishing your franchise shared a fraction of their success)? The Detroit Red Wings managed to steal a game late in the third (under 30 seconds left in the game late) from the Edmonton Oilers on a goal by Valtteri Flippula and take the 2-1 win. The Atlanta Thrashers have turned the corner since starting the season with 6th straight losses. SInce GM Don Waddell took over the bench duties after firing head coach Bob Hartley, the Thrashers have won 4 of their last 6 games. The Thrashers defeated the Montreal Canadiens last night 3-2 by way of shootout. Jarome Iginla owns the Nashville Predators.... OWNS OWNS. Actually no one may own the Predators after today ( deadlines are looming today regarding the sale of the club).... anyway, the Predators ran into a flaming brick wall in the form of Calgary Flames goalie Miika Kiprusoff who stopped 39 shots to give his team the 5-1 win. Jarome Iginla scored two during the win.
Game of the Night:
Columbus at Los Angeles 10:30 PM Preview
A couple of perrenial bottom feeders who are on the cusp of changing how most feel about their clubs go head to head tonight. Pascal Leclaire and Jason LaBarbera will try to outduel each other in net. Both teams boast some explosive young forwards as well. Enjoy the games!
Your friend on ice,

Another amazing playoffs left us with a wide array of some of the finest playoff beards to date.
One of the Ottawa Senators most glaring weaknesses this post season was their lack of playoff beard depth. The chin mullet has become a phenomenon that can mysteriously make or break teams in the playoffs. Point in case. Last season Michael Peca shaved his playoff beard between the Western Conference Finals, and the Stanley Cup Finals. His actions, while at the time may not have seemed significant, may have cursed his club. The Edmonton Oilers watched their goaltender Dwayne Roloson go down with an injury and their Stanley Cup dreams dashed. This season, New York Rangers forward Matt Cullen sculpted his playoff beard to a more manageable playoff goatee.... and just when it looked like they would take a 3-2 series lead over Buffalo, the playoff beard curse struck, allowing Sabres forward Chris Drury to tie the game with 7 seconds to go, and helped lift his club past the Rangers.
The Senators, aside from defencemen Chris Phillips (who's playoff beard still couldn't fend off the lack of jaw fuzz depth on his team... which perhaps led to his flub in Game 5) and Tom Preissing had little to Yeti factor. Most of the Senators looked like Jeff Friesen on day 2 of not shaving. Daniel Alfredsson who's attempted season after season to grow a playoff beard unsuccessfully, did finally give up during the playoffs and shaved. Granted his facial hair was comparable to the thin wispy hairs that Homer Simpson sports atop his skull, but it was a playoff beard nonetheless.... and he shaved it. Thus bringing about the playoff beard curse.
The Anaheim Ducks aside from being a stellar hockey club from top to bottom, showcased beard growth that this country hasn't witnessed since the Civil War. Anyone of them could have taken the Chuck Norris Trophy for best playoff beard. I had several favorites on this team, but two of the standouts for me were hulking winger Dustin Penner, and grinding forward Todd Marchant. Penner looked like a man who had been locked in solitary confinement for 3 years, and Marchant was the spitting image of a young Santa Claus (remember the old animated puppet Christmas shows, that told the tale of how Chris Kringle became Santa.... ok right now I am really dorking out) before his beard went white. Either one of these gentleman would have been worthy of the Playoff Beard's greatest award.
However, the master of the beard took center stage once again. Anytime this gentleman is in the playoffs, his beard is a beacon of hope for all (except for stock holders of shaving related corporations), not to mention his play. His skill, determination, and of course playoff beard have helped 2 different organizations capture the Stanley Cup for a combined 4 times. His latest efforts also saw him honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy for the most valuable player. Well it is time to honor this warrior of facial hair one more time.
Please join me in congratulating Anaheim Ducks defenceman Scott Niedermayer as our 2006-2007 Chuck Norris Trophy winner for best playoff beard!
Congratulations Scotty. Home Depot is having a sail on hedge trimmers this week, and if you have any trouble shaving that thing, I know a great landscaper.
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
With two games in the Stanley Cup Final books, it's time to get down to what's really important.
PLAYOFF BEARDS!
It seems almost poetic that one of the finest playoff beards ever, cultivated by Anahiem Duck's defenceman Scott Niedermayer is on display for all the world to see. The man has truly transformed growing facial hair into an Olympic event.
Playoff Beards and the NHL playoffs have gone hand in hand now for almost 30 years now, and this season has once again proven that standard. The battle for the real Norris Trophy is on!
Last season there were a plethorough of face mullets and in the end, one Bret Hedican (defenceman of the Carolina Hurricanes) outshined the rest and took home the coveted Chuck Norris Trophy. I'm sure many of you have your favorites, but right now, I already see a player who may very well take home the title. Much like Hedican of last year, this player has emerged as Captain Bosh's favorite. Who is it?
As much as I would love to give the man his due honors, I think it only fair to wait till after the Cup is being hoisted by our new champions. Soon after that I will reveal the winner. Barring any unprecedented hair growth over the next week, or an act of terrorism by Gillette, this player will be hard to beat.
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
Oh yeah!!! When these two boys aren't out entertaining at bachelor parties they are displaying exceptional skill, and a pair of the finest playoff beards seen North of the border. Or South of it frankly.
The Vancouver Canucks rise to supremacy in the Northwest as well as the Western Conference is due in large part to the play of these rising stars. In the month of March, aside from cultivating superior chin mullets, their play is second only to Joe Thorton (your Playoff Beard of the Month of October winner) and to each other. Within the last 30 days, Henrik Sedin has collected 19 points (2 goals 17 assists), and his brother Daniel 18 points (9 goals, 11 assists) and have helped the Canucks win so regularly that goaltender Roberto Luongo is flirting with Bernie Parent's 47 win season record. Is it any coincidence that Mr. Luongo is also a recipient of the coveted Playoff Beard of the Month Award for the month of January? I think not. Grow the beard, and the wins will come. If Martin Brodeur grew a playoff beard in October, the Devils would be undefeated right now (granted that is speculative, but I think the facts above more than prove my statement).
Please join me in congratulating Vancouver Canucks forwards, brothers, exotic dancers and facial hair champions Henrik and Daniel Sedin for the being the Playoff Beards of the Month of March!
Quick Shave:
Gotta give it up for Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier for scoring his 50th goal of the season last in a 4-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Lecavalier also added 2 assists and helped his team leap frog the Rangers back into 6th place in the Eastern Conference. The Hurricanes, well they aren't doing so good. The Montreal Canadiens 5 game win streak came to a screeching halt last night against the Ottawa Senators. The Senators defeated the 8th place Habs 5-2, and the usual suspects recorded the tallies (Spezza, Heatley, etc.). No DiPietro looks like no way for the New York Islanders. Mike Dunham was stellar last night allowing 5 goals on 10 shots in the first period and was summarily executed by Ted Nolan.... I mean pulled. The Islanders did put up a vailant effort but ultimately fell to the Buffalo Sabres 6-4. Their playoff hopes are hanging by a thread and really on the return of their number one keeper. New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur only had to make 14 saves to secure a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The win was his 45th of the season and much like Luongo has a legitimate shot to take Parent's wins record this season. The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Dallas Stars 4-3 in the shootout last night, but did gain a point. They are now 1 behind the Sabres with 106 for the league lead.
This month's Hockey News had a great article that polled some 283 players on a variety of topics. The most interesting question was who is the most overrated player. Sean Avery was the clear cut winner, followed by Bryan McCabe and Brad Richards. What made that poll so funny was that News gave Avery a chance to retort, to which he stated "I'm overrated? What about Shane Doan?" Priceless.
Game of the Night:
Buffalo at Montreal 7:00 PM
Pittsburgh at Toronto 7:00 PM
Calgary at Vancouver 10:00 PM
Is there anything better than hockey on all day? The appropriate answer is No Bosh. There really isn't. Buffalo and Montreal has got to be one of the most exciting series all season, and I'm looking forward to seeing these two teams throw down again. Rumors of Cristobal Huet returning to action earlier this week might mean he will be showing up tonight.... we'll see if Carbonneau gives him a start of rides his young rookie Halak. Pens, Leafs is going to be awesome. Expect the Leafs (who desperately need these two points) to come out blood thirsty, and look for Crosby to score a header. The Pens are fighting the Devils for the Atlantic Division lead so I don't imagine they will be mailing this one in. And if you aren't too drunk, the all Canadian special with Northwest Division rivals doing battle should be fitting end to your evening. Enjoy the games!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
February has been a good month for New York Islander forward Trent Hunter. Hunter has put together a solid run of production over the last 30 days, scoring 11 points (8 goals, 3 assists). Two of Hunter's goals were also game winners, and the big forward now has his team sitting 7th overall in the Eastern Conference.
Hunter's greatest contribution to the New York Islanders has not been his play however. This Islander's greatest asset is the beautiful 1960's Klingon Goatee from Star Trek that he has been sporting recently. Is there still a doubt between facial hair and on ice production? As well there should not be. Expect Hunter to be among the Islanders best in playoff beard growth this post season. In the meantime....
Congratulations Trent Hunter on being the Playoff Beard of the Month for February!
Quick Shave:
Let's stay with the New York Islanders for a moment and talk about their newest player Ryan Smyth. Smyth left Edmonton yesterday following a tearful press conference to hook up with his new team. Smyth should make his debut with the Islanders tonight as they face the St. Louis Blues. For everyone who is giving Kevin Lowe a hard time for this trade, back off for a second and think about it this. If Ryan Smyth really does love Edmonton as much as he stated in the press conference yesterday, he will re-sign with the Oilers in the off season. From what I heard, they were $300k apart..... in NHL terms, not too far. Then you get your 'heart and soul' player back to add to your two new prospects, and the first rounder you acquired from New York. If Smyth doesn't re-sign with the Oilers will your anger shift to him rather than Lowe? Bosh wonders. Jarome Iginla scored the game winner to give the Calgary Flames the 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild last night. their first win by shootout this season. Wha?! Tell me Sutter isn't going to look into acquiring some shootout specialists this off season. The Ottawa Senators swept the home and home series against the Carolina Hurricanes last night. The Sens shutout out the Canes 2-0 on a 27 save night by goaltender Ray Emery. Dany Heatley and Spezza scored for the Senators. The two biggest movers prior to the trade deadline, the Nashville Predators (who picked up Forsberg), and the San Jose Sharks (Bill Guerin) faced off last night. Guerin made his debut for the Sharks last night but his presence did little to lift his team, as they fell the Predators 4-3 in the shootout last night.
Game of the Night:
Pittsburgh at NY Rangers 7:00 PM
I'm going homer on this one. The Rangers need this game big time. I'm also excited to see the 'new look' Pens tonight. Should be a great test for the Rangers, who took out the Habs 4-0 on Monday. Enjoy the games!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
Well folks it's that time of the month again! Time for us to point out not only exceptional play on the ice, but outstanding hair growth on the face.
Over the past two months one of the hottest teams in the league has been without question the Vancouver Canucks. Currently sitting in the top spot in the Northwest, the Canucks have themselves the third seed overall in the Western Conference. For 13 straight games they have been outshot by their counterparts, but because of the amazing play of goaltender Roberto Luongo, they have won 10 of those games. Most recently Luongo made 38 saves against the San Jose Sharks, and cemented the 3-1 victory in a game they were outshot 39-23. It seems that stellar play wasn't the only thing the Roberto carried with him from Florida to Vancouver. Over the Canucks winning streak Luongo has maintained a tight, clean playoff beard reminiscent of Detective Crockett from Miami Vice.
Please join me in congratulating Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo for the being the Playoff Beard of the Month of January!

Quick Shave:
New York Rangers sophomore Peter Prucha is showing signs of busting out of his slump. Last night against the Boston Bruins, the young forward scored two goals, and added an assist in the 6-1 beating. Brendan Shanahan scored on a penalty shot, and Matt Cullen added a score. Both were short handed goals. The Montreal Canadiens will soon be the first team to have players wearing triple digit numbers on their backs as they retired another one of their greats. Last night was Habs goaltending star Ken Dryden who was the backbone of one of the most dominant squads the NHL has ever witnessed, saw his #29 retired and raised to the rafters of the Bell Centre. The Canadiens further honored Dryden by defeating the Ottawa Senators 3-1. The trades have begun! The Calgary Flames re-acquired center Craig Conroy from the Los Angeles Kings for forward Jamie Lundmark and a collection of draft picks. Conroy was a former center for Flames star Jarome Iginla and helped them to the Western Conference Championship, and the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003-2004 where they fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning in game 7.
Game of the Night:
New Jersey at Atlanta 7:00 PM
There are quite a few great games on tonight, but this one looks to be one of the best. The Devils have a one point lead over the Thrashers in the Eastern Conference, and this is starting to look like a late round playoff matchup. The Devils took the last meeting to launch themselves into the second seed, and are coming off an awful game against the Florida Panthers. Look for a playoff type atmosphere during this one!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
Is there any doubt in the power of the playoff beard? Joe Thornton started the season on a down note....then he grew a playoff beard. Joe now has 40 points (9 goals, 31 assists) on the season and once again has his San Jose Sharks sitting among the elite in the West, if not the NHL.
Across the country, in an arena built on top of what was originally land fill, Rick DiPietro, goaltender for the New York Islanders, has grown himself a fine playoff beard over the past month, and has been harvesting wins for his club ever since.
DiPietro shutdown the New York Rangers last night by stopping all 28 shots they threw at him for the 2-0 win. The victory was the third win in a row at Nassau Coliseum by way of shutout. The shutout was his fourth of the season, and 10th of his career. DiPietro has not allowed a goal at home in over 185 minutes of play now. Can you say playoff beard? We can. That is why we congratulate Rick DiPietro on being the Playoff Beard of the Month for December. Congratulations Rick!
Quick Shave:
Across the Hudson, and I guess the East River, and parts of Staten Island in New Jersey, goaltender Martin Brodeur was making noise of his own by shutting down the high flying Pittsburgh Penguins. Broduer made 26 saves for the New Jersey Devils for the 3-0 shutout win, the 85th of his career. The Anaheim Ducks had a scare last night as star goaltender Jean Sebastien Giguere was felled by a leg injury late in the second period against the San Jose Sharks. Rookie Mike Wall stepped in for Giguere and needed to make only 4 saves to preserve the 4-3 win for the Ducks. Fantasy owners of Giguere may want to consider picking up Wall if he is out for an extended period as Bryzgalov is currently on the IR with a groin injury right now. Expect Wall to get a beard load of starts. The Vancouver Canucks stagnant offence came to life last night against the stingy Calgary Flames thanks in large part to the Sedin twins. Daniel Sedin scored a pair of goals, and brother Henrik offered up twin assists in the 3-1 win. The Carolina Hurricanes have quietly been stockpiling wins recently, and last night took their fifth straight by defeating the Florida Panthers 4-2. Cam Ward made 25 saves and Rod Brind'Amour potted the game winner for the Canes.
Game of the Night:
Atlanta at Pittsburgh 7:30 PM
This just looks like it will be a fun one to watch. Speed, speed, speed. Also, at 1pm today, Canada will be playing USA in the World Juniors, and NHL Center Ice will be airing it! Enjoy the games my friends!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
Mid-November saw Anaheim Ducks GM Brian Burke make a few maneuvers that sent a couple of players in Stanislav Chistov and Todd Fedoruk out East (to Boston and Philadelphia respectively) in return for a bag of future draft picks. Burke however did send one draft pick to Colorado to retrieve a player in return. George Parros.
Burke admitted the acquisition of Parros was because of his affinity for enforcers as he stated : ''I don't like playing without a heavyweight. I think everyone knows that.'' (quoted from TSN.ca) What GM Brian Burke didn't say, was the real reason he acquired the hulking winger. Playoff Beard Depth.
Sure Parros can open up a can of butt-kick (as he has now done twice for the Ducks, most recently to Cam Janssen of the New Jersey Devils who suffered a shoulder injury in the scrum), but it's his facial hair that was the driving force behind this deal. George Parros sports a playoff moustache the likes of which Jeff Friesen can only dream about. Not since the days of Lanny McDonald has the NHL witnessed a lip mullet of this stature. In 1881, Wyatt Earp would be handing the street-howitzer to George Parros and not Doc Holliday as they marched toward the O.K. Corral. Today, GM Brian Burke hands the playoff beard to Parros, as the Ducks march toward the Stanley Cup.
Quick Shave:
Maybe a coaching change was what the Chicago Blackhawks needed? Or perhaps the Dallas Stars are in line for one? Tuomo Ruutu scored the game winner with less that 2 minutes remaining to give Coach Savard, and the Chicago Blackhawks the 2-1 victory. The San Jose Sharks defeated the Minnesota Wild 2-1 last night. The goal was the first allowed by the Sharks in 2 games, whose goaltending tandem of Toskala and Nabokov have been very stingy lately (I think we should nickname them Tos-Nab, or Nab-Tos, just to make it easier....a kind of JayLo, A-Rod monicker if you will....anyone?). Nabokov only had to make 15 saves to secure the win. The Sharks are unstoppable, and are second only to Anaheim and Buffalo in the NHL with 38 points. I think this team is for real. The Nashville Predators handed the Philadelphia Flyers another loss last night. Martin Erat scored the game winner late in the third period to get the 3-2 win for the Predators. Predators call-up Alexander Radulov scored again, in his third straight game and may be making a case for his stay with the big team. Chris Mason also had a solid game in net for the Predators covering for the injured Vokoun. Prior to the game, Mike Knuble signed a two year contract extension with the Philadelpia Flyers worth $5.6 million....he also opened the scoring for the Flyers in thanks. Flyers goaltender Robert Esche had surgery on his groin (yep) and will be out of action for most of December. Edmonton Oilers forward Ales Hemsky will be having his shoulder x-rayed after being injured in the loss to Anaheim Tuesday night.
Game of the Night:
Montreal at Carolina 7:00 PM
First round rematch? Cristobal Huet is on, and I'd like to see if Cam Ward can match his efforts. The Hurricanes have stumbled a bit lately, and the Habs have been riding the hot netminding of Huet....both teams mirror each other so this should be a great match. Also, look for Alexander Frolov to join the HTC against Phoenix tonight. Enjoy the games!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh
The power of the beard is with you young Thornton.....but you are not in the playoffs yet.
Joe Thornton, while assisting on just about every goal the San Jose Sharks have scored this season, had yet to drop one in the net himself. That is until last night. Joey T. apparently looking to end his goaless drought, began cultivating a playoff beard late last week, and the results of his facial mullet have already payed off. Joe Thornton scored his first goal on the power play last night against the Tampa Bay Lightning and helped the Sharks to victory 4-2. May the beard be with you Joe....always. The Phoenix Coyotes have finally agreed to a one year deal with unrestricted free agent center Yanic Perreault worth $700,000. Hopefully his addition will spark some life into the Coyotes who are rapidly collapsing.
Quick Shave:
Coming off the bench seems to have done Jose Theodore some good. The Colorado Avalanche goaltender showed signs of his former self making 20 saves and helping his team defeat the recently unstoppable Minnesota Wild. Milan Hejduk has been on fire lately, scored 2 of the goals for the Avs, and forward Ian Laperriere recorded his 100th career goal late in the third to round out the scoring.
Game of the Night:
Washington at Calgary 9:00 PM
Calder Trophy Winner Alexander Ovechkin goes up against Calder Trophy Runner-Up Dion Phaneuf as the Capitals continue their tour of Canada. Olaf Kolzig has been playing some great hockey lately, and has managed to give his team a chance in most of their games this season. It will be interesting to see if the Flames can muster any offense against him. Enjoy the games!

This is the newest feature of Playoff Beard .com. With the start of the 2006-2007 NHL season less than a month away, it's time to once again celebrate the beard that flourishes on ice. Granted the real facial hair doesn't start blossoming till April when the post season begins, but playoff beard potential can always be spotted throughout the season. Once a month we will spotlight the Playoff Beard of the Month.
