Pronger Flying for life

Playoff Beard .com - Chris ProngerThe Philadelphia Flyers made sure their shakeup of the Eastern Conference landscape would not be for the short term.

Just a few weeks removed from their acquisition of defenceman Chris Pronger from the Anaheim Ducks, the Flyers locked up the monster blueliner for what will most likely be the remainder of his career. Pronger and the Flyers agreed to a 7 year contract worth $35 million, which includes a no-movement clause (so Pronger is not allowed to poop for the better part of decade... i know it was cheap but I had to take that one!).

The Flyers are going to be a formidable club with Pronger in the rear, as well as on the powerplay. Pronger recorded 11 goals and 37 assists last season.

Quick Shave:
The Toronto Maple Leafs makeover under new GM Brian Burke continued this week as they acquired defenceman Francois Beauchamin for the next three seasons at $3.8 million per. The Leafs also acquired Swedish free agent goaltender Jonas Gustavsson.

Gustavsson has been called the best goaltender not playing in the NHL, and was being aggressively courted by several NHL clubs including Colorado, San Jose, and Dallas. He will get the best opportunity to compete for the number one goaltender position in Toronto (although he probably would have had a decent shot in Colorado as well), and should he win the spot, I would expect the Leafs to move Vesa Toskala sometime during the upcoming season, if not sooner.

Later on Joe

Playoff Beard .com - Joe SakicColorado Avalanche forward Joe Sakic will apparently announce his retirement on Thursday.

For 20 NHL seasons, Sakic played for the Quebec Nordiques / Colorado Avalanche. In 1378 games played, Joe Sakic scored 1,641 points (625 goals, 1,016 assists), was twice a Stanley Cup Winner, appeared in 13 NHL All-Star Games, was the MVP of the Canadian gold medal team in the 2002 Olympics. Clearly a first ballot hall of famer.

There is still a chance he may represent Canada in the 2010 Olympics which take place in Vancouver.

Joe Sakic was a special player. As I stated the other day, rare are the athletes that choose to remain with the same franchise for the length of their careers. Sakic will be missed.

Congratulations on an amazing career Joe!

Nash Jacketed

Playoff Beard .com - Rick NashForward Rick Nash and the only club he's ever known, the Columbus Blue Jackets agreed to terms on a new long-term contract.

The Jackets signed Nash to an extension that will pay him $62.4 million over the next 8 years. Nash collected 79 points (40 goals, 39 assists) in 78 games last season and helped the Blue Jackets to the post season for the first time in their franchises' young history.

Personally, this is the feel good story of the summer. It's nice to see Nash take the Steve Yzerman route and stay with the club he began with and hopefully finish what he started. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see him in a Rangers jersey, but overall, Nash staying Columbus is good for that community, and if he can help make that club consistently competitive, it will be good for hockey overall.

Playoff Beard .com - Ryan SmythThe Colorado Avalanche dealt winger Ryan Smyth to the Los Angeles Kings today for defencemen Kyle Quincey, Tom Preissing, and 5th round pick.

Great pick-up for LA. Smyth scored 26 goals and 33 assists last year on an Avalanche team that fell off the radar last year and is apparently excited about the possibilities of lining up with a young, up and coming roster of Kings players.

The Kings were onced rumored to be interested in Heatley, but were either turned off by GM Brian Murray's asking price, or the selfishness exhibited by the player over the past month. In any case, I think they made an outstanding move. Smyth is hard working player who produces, and will provide some much needed veteran leadership. The Kings are going to be a good looking club next season.

Free Agency Begins

Playoff Beard .com - Mike CammalleriJuly 1st... Christmas time for most NHL players and fans as teams around the league retool and reload for next season.

No team has made more noise in the past 24 hours than the Montreal Canadiens. A day after picking up center Scott Gomez from the New York Rangers in a trade, the Canadiens added free agents, center Michael Cammalleri (5 years $30 million), defenceman Hal Gill (2 years $4.5million), forward Jaroslav Spacek (3 years $11.5 million) and forward Brian Gionta (5 years $25 million). No Hab fan can really be disappointed (except maybe in the Spacek pickup, but we'll see) in what GM Bob Gainey did today. Cammalleri will probably command the first line duty as center for the Canadiens, and this guy has been a solid performer, posting 39 goals and 43 assists last season with the Flames. Re-uniting Brian Gionta with Scott Gomez suddenly makes yesterdays unusual trade with the Rangers make a whole lot more sense. Gionta and Gomez were a great tandem together in New Jersey several years ago, and Gainey is banking on the pair to find that magic again. Solid marks to the Gainey and the Habs.

Playoff Beard .com - Marion GaborikThe New York Rangers, blessed with cap room after moving Scott Gomez yesterday, gave Glen Sather the green-light to start spending money wildly again. The Rangers picked up enforcer Donald Brashear (2 years $2.8 million... way too much money in my opinion) and forward Marion Gaborik (5 years $37.5 million). The Gaborik signing could either be a gem or the move that finally runs Sather out of New York depending on whether or not he can stay healthy... which has been a big problem for him the past few seasons. The Brashear signing most likely means the end of Blair Betts' days in New York since the last time the two saw one another, the former was wiping the latter's orbital bone off of his elbow.

Playoff Beard .com - Daniel and Henrik SedinThe Vancouver Canucks re-signed the Sedin twins just prior to the noon free agency period this morning to identical 5 year deals worth $30.5 million. The Canucks are rumored to be working on long-term extension for their captain and goaltender Roberto Luongo as well.

The Toronto Maple Leafs picked up free agent defenceman Mike Komisarek for 5 years, $22.5 million, and former Rangers tough guy Colton Orr, for 4 years, $4 million.

The Washington Capitals acquired forward Mike Knuble for 2 years, $5.6 million.

Playoff Beard .com - Marian HossaThe Chicago Blackhawks made another free agent splash picking up free agent forward Marian Hossa for 12 years, $62.8 million. Hossa opted to cash in this year rather than bet the farm on a one year deal with a contender like he did with Detroit last year... however, the Chicago Blackhawks are not far from being a contender themselves after making it to the Western Conference Finals last year.

Playoff Beard .com - Nikolai KhabibulinThe Edmonton Oilers who lost goaltender Dwayne Roloson to the New York Islanders (2 years $5 million) acted quickly and signed backstop Nikolai Khabibulin to a 4 year, $15 million deal. The Oilers are also currently working on trying to convince Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley to waive his no-trade clause and join their club. The Oilers have agreed with the Senators on a trade to move Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner, and Ladislav Smid to Ottawa for Heatley, but the deal fell through when he refused to accept. Heatley is now faced with the very real possibility that the Oilers may be he last chance to get out of Ottawa as the pool of suitors has all but dried up.

Busy day today and it is certainly not over. There should be plenty of more action over the next few days, and throughout the remainder of the summer. To keep up with all of the movement around the NHL, check out the free agent tracker TSN.ca has set up.

Captain Bosh
