NHL Entry Draft

Playoff Beard .com - Mike Cammalleri
Well not much happened last night.

RIIIIIGHT.

The Calgary Flames made the most noise yesterday, and perhaps even outshone the Tampa Bay Lightning and their first round draft pick of highly touted forward Steven Stamkos.

The Flames first made a move to acquire forward Mike Cammalleri from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for it's 17th overall pick and a second rounder in 2009. The Kings who had more picks than any team in the draft (125 I believe) moved the second round pick and their 28th overall to Anaheim in exchange for thier 12th overall.

The Flames were hardly done. Calgary forward Alex Tanguay who has been the poster boy for trade rumors over the past year was finally dealt. Tanguay was traded to the Montreal Canadiens for their 25th pick overall and a second rounder in 2009.

Playoff Beard .com - Alex TanguayAnother rumor mill resident, Olli Jokinen finally saw rumor become reality last night. The Florida Panther shipped Jokinen West to the Phoenix Coyotes for defencemen Keith Ballard, Nick Boynton and the 49th pick in this years draft.

The Columbus Blue Jackets traded their 19th and 67th picks to the Philadelphia Flyers for forward R.J. Umberger.

The Montreal Canadiens have reportedly gained exclusive negotiating rights for forward Mats Sundin from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Terms of the deal have not been disclosed, and most likely won't be made public unless Sundin does in fact sign a contract with the Habs.

Believe it or not, there was actually a draft going on during all of this. Here's a look at the first round:

I think last night had to be the highlight of being a Coyotes fan. Not saying the hiring of Gretzky wasn't a huge deal, but Gretzky ain't on the ice. Jokinen's a consistent performer and the Coyotes showed last year that they have a lot of young guys to be excited about.

That said, I kind of wonder what type of numbers Jokinen will put up in the Western conference and a tough as nails division. No more beating up on Carolina, Washington, Tampa, and Atlanta. Time to deliver the goods.

Also, just read that Ray Shero's made an offer to Marian Hossa and that the Pens remain his first choice, but he's going to test free agency to see if another offer comes along. My guess is he'll get it, but it might not be from a team he wants to play with. I wonder if Tampa could afford him now that Richards is out of the fold? If not, I'm sure the Canadiens would love to have him if Mats Sundin doesn't pan out.

MELROSE IS BACK!!! RING THE ALARMS!! MELROSE IS BACK!!

Hossa will be a Bruin if they can get the cap space. That's my bet.

Jokinen should really help the o in Phoenix, but they gave up a defensive line to get him... was that a good move? I think the Panthers made out on that deal.
