Gomez assists Rangers in Game 1 win
New York Rangers forward Scott Gomez stung his former club the New Jersey Devils last night by setting up three goals enroute to their Game 1 victory.
The game was a tight affair for most of the evening. Scoreless in the first, the Rangers and Devils traded goals in the second and then New York broke it open in the third and won the game 4-1. Rangers forward Ryan Callahan recorded a short handed score midway through the third that would hold up as the eventual game winner. Sean Avery provided some insurance late in the game and Nigel Dawes sealed the win with an empty netter. Goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves, and a few brilliant ones that kept the Rangers in the game. Game 2 is Friday night.
Quick Shave:
Talk about role reversal! The Pittsburgh Penguins lit up and shut down the Ottawa Senators last night 4-0 and took game 1 of the series convincly. Penguins goaltender Marc Andre Fleury made 26 saves to record his first career playoff shutout. Pens forward Evgeni Malkin scored a goal and added two helpers, and big surprise Gary Roberts returned, fresh from the IR list to score two goals. The Senators looked like the same team that limped into the playoffs. If they don't right the ship soon, the series will be over very quickly.

Captain Bosh

You know, I gotta say I didn't think the Sens were that bad last night nor do I think the Pens were that good. They won the game because - and probably ONLY because - Ottawa's power play turned into invisible ink. If Pittsburgh gives up 7 penalties in Ottawa it's hard to imagine they'll leave with a victory, especially if the 5 on 3s continue. And how many times did Pittsburgh flub their passes to the point in the offensive zone last night? Too many. They have things to work on today in practice. But fortunately for us fans, Gary Roberts is a mythical creature that only awakes from his slumber in April to eat opposing teams...What a game!
Gomez was huge. Broduer was not from what I saw. That Callahan goal was a bad, bad mistake. I'd expect him to be much better next game, but the Rangers have a lot of offensive options. I bet next game belongs to Drury.

I'd disagree, Stache. It looked to me like the Pens had a much more cohesive team game going on. The only reason it wasn't a 9-0 game was some acrobatic saves by Gerber.

I'm with Jeff, Stache. I think you are being a little hard on your club.
The major thing the Pens have now, that the Sens don't is confidence. Fleury is playing great also.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I think it's great that they can win a game like that. They have to win games like that, in fact, if they hope to compete for the cup. Confidence is high and team defense is as solid as I've seen on a Pens team in years and years. But still...taking seven penalties against a depleted Ottawa team? Pause for a moment and imagine if it had been Montreal they were playing. Or Washington. Or Detroit. Still think it would be 4-0 Pens??? No way in hell.
A good game one, but I know they can play better and surely will. Which is a GREAT thing!
