Pronger get's 8
Upon further review....
After viewing better quality footage, the NHL handed Anaheim Duck's defenceman Chris Pronger an 8 game suspension for his skate stomp to the leg of Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler. Pronger's suspension pales in comparison the 30 day special that New York Islanders forward Chris Simon recieved for an almost duplicate incident.
There is clearly a double standard. While Pronger's actions had to be addressed, the man puts the fans in the seats... where Simon does not. I don't agree with it. It's just the way it is, and it is something that will never change.
Quick Shave:
New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has done it again. Broduer made 24 saves earlier today and helped the Devils to a 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche, his 40th victory of the season. Brodeur has now won 40 games or more in a record seven NHL seasons. We are watching the greatest goaltender in NHL history right now. Drink it in folks.

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous to think that the Devils could win the Eastern conference or at the very least their division AGAIN. Lose Gomez? No problem. Rafalski? Please. They just keep winning and the only constant you can point to is Brodeur. He's insane. I hate his team, but he's insane. My beard hat's off to the guy.
As for Pronger, I think part of the difference in suspensions also has to do with the fact that the play was already stopped (wasn't it?) in the Simon situation. He was against the bench, right beside the refs, right beside the opposing team (not smart), and he still stomped on Ruutu's foot. To do that in front in everyone shows a blatant disregard for the rules. Pronger was way sneakier. It was difficult to see even on video until they found a clip with a closer shot.
Again, not saying it's right but it seems like the openness of the infraction is the big difference here in my eyes.

Pronger's looked worse to me. Simon's seemed more like a glancing 'FU' as he was heading to the bench. Pronger looked like he was trying to injure Kesler.
No matter how it's rationalized, there is clearly a double standard.
