An ole fashion Donnybrook!
You know it's gonna be a great season, when the New York Islanders and New York Rangers are already hating on one another. Last night's pre-season matchup in Uniondale, so the cross-town rivals battle more with their fists than with the puck. Over 100 minutes in penalties were awarded to the participants including a pair of game misconducts to the goalies.
Yep, former Playoff Beard of the Month winner and Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro dropped the gloves with young Rangers netminder Al Montoya and gave the crowd some old time hockey. This is gonna be a some series this season. Here's the fight for your viewing pleasure (thanks to Stache for digging this up):
Your friend on ice,

Al Montoya--Yeah, that's how we roll at Michigan.

The guys on the Sportsnet PodCast brought up a great point today. Why was Chris Simon playing when he is still serving part of a 25 game suspension?

that's a good question. i was under the impression that suspensions only count during the regular season, because that is when the player is actually under contract, i.e. getting paid to play. anyone else have any ideas?
the better question is, why did nolan play simon against the rangers in pre-season. inevitable fight, especially since hollweg played.

That was what I understood too, but then why is Mark Bell not allowed to even join the Maple Leafs (from what i hear he can't even practice with the team), until the conclusion of his suspension?

I think Nolan played Simon because he doesn't take crap from anybody. The guy was great in Buffalo and then couldn't get a job for ten years? Come on, you know that has more to do with personality than talent. I think Nolan's probably a hard-ass who wanted Simon out there because A) he wants Simon to get a work out before he takes his 25 game vacation B) he didn't want the media to ask him why he DIDN'T play Simon if it's allowed by the league in pre-season (which, by the way, makes me wonder if Sean Hill's playing in pre-season games for the Wild) and C) Because he probably wanted to get this crap out of the way now when points weren't on the line.
I think Tom Renney said that he'd be surprised if there was this much fighting between these two teams in a regular season game, simply because the outcome of the game would mean more. And, really, he better hope so based on how Montoya got douched. This is exactly why they should've kept Kasparitis around! Who's going to protect Jagr, Drury, Gomez, and Straka?
