Wings go down in Flames
The Calgary Flames have now won 6 in a row. Last night's victory over the Detroit Red Wings was punctuation mark on the win streak, that began several weeks ago, following a loss to the very same team. The Red Wings have been on a tear of their own this season, winning nine in a row prior to last night's 4-1 loss.
Miika Kipprusoff made 29 saves against the Red Wings and the Flames scored 4 goals on 25 shots. Their last meeting, the Flames only managed 13 shots on net....and their offense, was, well offensive. The Flames received scoring from Kristian Huselius, Matthew Lombardi, Daymond Langkow and sophomore defenceman Dion Phaneuf. The Calder Trophy runner up is having a great season for the Flames. Phaneuf has scored 11 points (4 goals, 7 assists) and is a +10 through 17 games this season.
Quick Shave:
Since setting an NHL record for most points to start a season before a regulation loss, the Anaheim Ducks have surrendered victories to two of the NHL's bottom feeders. Firstly, their 7-4 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers several nights ago, and last night's loss the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hawks defeated the Ducks 4-3, as Nikolai Khabibulin made 42 saves, returning from a broken finger that saw him miss the last 9 games. Markus Naslund potted a pair to help the Vancouver Canucks get off a three game losing streak by defeating the St. Louis Blues 4-2. Former first round pick, and first player selected ever by the Atlanta Thrashers, Patrik Stefan returned to his former home and helped the Dallas Stars to a 5-3 win. Stefan recorded a goal and two assists in the victory. Maxim Afinogenov returned to the lineup for the Buffalo Sabres, much to the dismay of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Afinogenov had a goal and an assist and led the Sabres to a 4-2 win. Columbus, hire Hitchcock now! The Columbus Blue Jackets fell to the Colorado Avalanche 3-0, as backup Peter Budaj made 25 saves to get the shutout.
Quick Shave:
Dallas at Carolina 7:00 PM
Do I really need to explain this one? The Stars are playing really well (unless I'm jinxing them when the play the Isles), and Cam Ward and the Hurricanes are back to their Stanley Cup Winning form. This should be a great matchup! Enjoy the games!
