Brodeur wins 450th game
It seems almost appropriate that the future stars of the NHL cut their teeth against probably the greatest goalie the NHL has ever seen. A season ago, young Sidney Crosby (as if he's old now), began his NHL career with the Penguins against Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils. Crosby did manage an assist in the game, but the Devils proved too much for his team. Last night saw Brodeur initiate the Penguins latest franchise addition in rookie forward Evgeni Malkin. Malkin's debut was delayed due to a separated shoulder which occurred during the pre-season, but the effects of the month old injury did little to prevent him from making everyone aware of his potential greatness.
Malkin scored his first ever NHL goal, by slipping a loose puck past the veteran Brodeur during the second period of the game. He looked smooth and confident on the ice and even broke the glass behind Brodeur with his slapshot! It may have been me, but Malkin at 6 foot 4 inches looked eerily similiar to Mario Lemieux at times. Never really impressing with speed, but more with a casual grace and total puck control that helped him skate the Devils defence on more than one occassion. However, the night was not for him alone. Never to be outdone, Martin Brodeur closed the door on the Penguins stopping 37 of the 38 shots he faced and helped the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 victory. The win was the 450th of his career, and Broduer now only trails Ed Belfour with 457, and Patrick Roy with 551. There is little doubt that he will one day surpass them both. Congratulations Marty.
Quick Shave:
The Philadelphia Flyers still reeling from their pummelling at the hands of the Sabres two nights ago, placed three players on waivers yesterday in an effort to inject some youth, and perhaps enthusiasm into the roster. Petr Nedved was the notable of the three being sent down, and if he isn't picked up his playing days could well be over. Nedved had been demoted to 4th line duty and penalty killing with the Flyers this year, a far cry from his first line center spot of just a few seasons ago. The New York Rangers were shut down by the Nashville Predators and Tomas Vokoun last night 3-0. Vokoun who was awful to start the season (so much so I traded him after week one) is beginning to find his game again (damn). Martin Havlat just keeps on scoring! Havlat and his Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Habs 2-1 last night!
Game of the Night:
Pittsburgh at NY Islanders 7:30 PM
Detroit at San Jose 10:30 PM
Let's watch Malkin again tonight! Mike Dunham has resurrected his career on the Island, and has helped them get 5 out of 6 points in the last 3 games. The Red Wings continue their west coast road trip and land in San Jose to face off agains the Sharks! The Sharks have been a lot of fun to watch, even though most teams have been shutting down Thornton lately the rest of the team has been providing offence in his absence. Enjoy the games!
Your friend on ice,
Captain Bosh

Chris Pronger=Satan

If Pronger's Satan, then Brodeur must be the uber-Lucifer.
The Devils sure know how to spoil a party don't they? Biggest buzzkill in the league, that team. Bastards.
Of course, the Pens didn't exactly help themselves judging from what I saw in the highlights and heard on the net. Both Jersey goals seemed to victimize what is an absolute defensive no-no in today's NHL: standing around. Especially Langenbrunner's goal. There had to be like four Pens right beside him. They could've lit his cigarette for him they were so close, but they sure didn't bother to take him out of the play.
But last night was all about Malkin and he certainly delivered. What impressed me from what little I saw is that he just looks so freaking comfortable out there. He doesn't look like a rookie at all to me and this has me thinking that maybe it was for the better that he played in Russia last year after all. There's just something about the way he carries himself on the ice that exudes control. He may not speak English, but he knows what the hell is going on.
Here's the real story of the game last night though. The Devils took ONE penalty the entire game. One. The Pens only took four or five, but the rest of the time they were engaged in a chess match with John Madden for ice time. Therrien fiddled with the lines all night, and at first I thought he was ruining any shot at chemistry but then I realized he was just trying to throw curveballs at the Devils to get a leg up on Madden (who I swear must have been out for nearly every shift Croz and Malkin took). And it paid off even if it wasn't reflected on the scoreboard. The Pens outshot the Devs 16-4 in the third period and 38-34 overall. Let me remind you that this is a team that posted 13 shots TOTAL against the Wings.
Malkin completely changes the make up of the team and will generate chances. Unfortunately, defense still wins games and Brodeur's the best defenseman in the game. Tonight the Pens have the luxury of battling the 2nd best defenseman in the game.
Yep, Brendan Witt.
Oh, and the Wild are still undefeated. Impressive, no?

Bosh found this letter in his email this morning.
Subject: My pain has a name...and it is Chris Pronger.
Why can't the Wings beat a team with Chris Pronger on it? I think he's the Anti-christ. No, really. Only the chin of Satan himself would be so bare the game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. He shuns the Holy Tradition of the Playoff Beard.
Keys to the game:
1. Special teams. The Ducks converted 3 of TEN power plays against the wings, and the Wings were 0/5, if I counted right. Penalties basically decided that game.
2. Ducks D. The fact that Pronger, and S. Nyder-mizzle are both on the Ducks makes for a pretty formidible blue line. I'd give credit to Giguere, but he hardly got any shots.
3. Special Teams.
4. Ineffective Wings D. The Wings left Hasek out to dry. That fourth goal was a defensive abortion. Hasek takes the point shot, and nobody picks up Perry, so he gets an easy rebound goal.
5-9. Special teams
10. Did I mention special teams?
Geez, I hate these west coast games, though. They start at 10, end around 1.
By the way, you never did explain where the name bosh came from...
Jeff
P.S. If you make the "Ducks Still Mighty" joke, I will end you. I will come to your house, and I will eat your soul.
P.P.S. I'm joking.
P.P.P.S. No I'm not.

No thoughts on my Malkin = Lemieux comparison? I'm telling you thats what he looks like out there.

Recchi said the same thing. I didn't see enough to really contribute to the discussion, but looks like yahoo's streaming video of the game tonight so I'll be watching. Just based on his posture and appearance, something about him actually reminds me of Ron Francis instead.
Also, have you heard of this NHL Connect business? It's like MySpace for hockey fans, supposedly. I'll give them credit for trying but it's kind of a pain to sign up (you have to send an email to get an automatic reply with a link. Um, why not just make a sign up page, NHL?) and the interface is a bit on the crappier side of crap.
Naturally, I jumped right on board.

You mean he'll get cancer then buy the Penguins??
Malkin looked...alright, I guess. He's got a heavy shot and moved around, but nothing any other Russian hasn't done.
Now with this anti-trust suit on top of the compensation suit...fun time ahead for the Pens, Russian hockey, and the league.
