Leetch returning to Rangers?
Perhaps. John Dellapina of the New York Daily News is reporting that a possible return to the Blueshirts is not out of the question for Brian Leetch, and although, they are stacked on defense, the Rangers appear to have interest also.
Leetch and his agent Jay Grossman have kept an open dialogue in recent weeks with Rangers GM Glen Sather, and Assistant GM Don Maloney about finding a way to bring the defenseman back home to New York. The Rangers payroll is just over $40 million which does provide them with room to sign Leetch, but the article also mentions that they may be looking for a replacement for Jed Ortmeyer, who may be out for the season with a heart ailment. This story just won't go away, will it??? I certainly understand why Leetch would want to go to a contender only, but I still can't see how the Rangers really need this guy. I'd love to see Leetch take a step back and go "You know what? I've already won a cup. I'm going to take a chance with a team that's young, fast, and could surprise people."
And then sign with Nashville.
Kidding, of course, but I have to believe there are other teams interested in him that maybe don't have the likes of a Jagr and Shanahan on the roster. I wonder if a team like Buffalo, who lost a player or two on defense, couldn't use a guy like Leetch in a limited role?
Oh, the Hurricanes signed Brad Isbister. Finally, the speculation can end!
