Captain Norris
Rumor has it that the captain vacancy left by future Hall of Fame Detroit Red Wing Steve Yzerman will be filled by some very capable skates. Defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom is rumored to be the heir apparent to the Red Wings captaincy, and really who else could you choose? Like Yzerman, Lidstrom has spent his entire career with the Red Wings, and in that time put up some impressive numbers. Over his 14 season career he has played almost 1100 games, scoring 189 goals and 617 assists. Lidstrom is also coming off a Norris Trophy season, his fourth such win in the last five seasons. While no announcement has been made official, and Coach Babcock has yet to confirm the rumor, sources within the organization are saying otherwise. For more on this visit TSN.ca.
Your friend on ice,

Actually, there was quite a lot of speculation in Detroit about Zetterburg getting the C. The guy does remind one of Yzerman in his younger years.
But yeah, this is the right decision. Chelios is a great player and I hear his chili is great, but he's not been around long enough to warrant a C. He's certainly experienced, so if they were to give one him an A I'd have no problem, though. The other A should probably go to Draper or Zetterburg.

It depends alot on the guy I guess too. Lidstrom could be a very quiet guy. Leetch was awesome on ice, but sucked as a captain. Quiet, and unintimidating. Your captain should be respected, and to a lesser extent, feared.

I'm a big Zetterberg fan (and I have fond memories of Robert Lang just to throw another hat into the ring), but I think Lidstrom's probably the guy for the job. There's a lot to be said about leading by example and has this guy EVER had a bad season? Not that I can recall.
On a related note, has there ever been a goalie captain? I can't think of one. I suppose this may have to do with the fact that the goalie is only sitting on the bench when he's been pulled and can't really participate in the in-game motivational speeches.
Still...seems a little discriminatory.
