Ray Emery solid filling in for Hasek

I think Ottawa can breathe a sigh of relief for now. Obviously, losing Dominik Hasek would dishearten any fan looking for the Stanley Cup, but backup turned starter Ray Emery has been outstanding. He started the year off great, hit a rough patch (which caused most of the concerns) and since taking over the injured Hasek, has been fantastic (tired of using the word stellar, you can make a drinking game out of that reading the hockey coverage). Emery continued his amazing run in March by helping the Sens beat the Rangers 4-1 last night for his 12th victory. That win tied him with Bernie Parent's 1974 record of most victories in a month. Emery has gone 12-4 in March, and should Hasek not return in time for the playoffs should be formidable in net for the Sens. I know he doesn't have 'playoff experience', but this team is loaded with skill, especially offensively. I see no reason why they won't be in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Last night's scores:

Washington 2 Montreal 3 F (OT)
Buffalo 1 New Jersey 3 F
NY Rangers 1 Ottawa 4 F
Atlanta 3 Tampa Bay 4 F
Detroit 4 Nashville 2 F
Los Angeles 0 Edmonton 4 F
Phoenix 5 San Jose 2 F

Game of the night:
Florida at Carolina 7:00 PM
Ok, this is the first of a three parter. If Florida can beat the Canes, then they will go into a two game matchup against the the Lightning with a ton of momentum. This is do or die for the Panther's tonite. Huge game. I think if they win this, we will see them in the 8th spot. Enjoy the games!

Jason Allison done for the season

According to TSN.ca Jason Allison is out for six weeks following surgery on his left hand Wednesday. Unless the Leafs make the playoffs, Allison's season is over. That being said, Allison's season is over.

All in all, Jason Allison has had a terrific year. Returning from a career threatening series of concussions, Allison was given little chance or opportunity to prove he still had it. Fortunately for him the Leafs gave him a shot and I think he's proven he still has game (unlike another Leaf with concussion issues). If there were an award for 'Comeback Player of the Year', I'd have to give it to him (there is technically an Espy Award for it, but since ESPN has turned it's back on hockey it's doubtful he will get much consideration for it. In fact, Ovechkin should get the Espy for play of the year, but we know that won't happen, but I digress). Allison is second on the Leafs in scoring with 60 points in 66 games (17 goals and 43 assists). Hopefully he can build on this for next year.

Can Florida pull it off?

By defeating the Penguins last night 5-3, the Florida Panthers have won seven straight games, and are now in a position to grab a playoff spot. They sit 10th overall with 75 points, just 6 points behind Jersey, Montreal, and Tampa Bay, who are all tied with 81. The Thrashers have 76 in the 9th spot, and behind the Panthers, the Leafs have 74. So the East has apparently gotten as wild as the West! Six teams fighting for three spots. All of the above have ten games remaining except for Atlanta who have eleven.

Florida's next game is against Carolina, which will be a very difficult task. However, immediately following that
they have a home and home (although not really, they get Sunday off) against Tampa Bay, the team they are trying to unseat. Four possible points. If the Panther's can sweep, I think the playoffs are theirs. They certainly have the momentum, and they really do control their own destiny. Good luck bros!

Jagr continues to make New York Ranger records kneel before him like the Son of Jor-El. Last night against the Islanders, Jaromir Jagr broke the single season points record by assisting on 4 goals in a 5-1 win. Jagr passed Jean Ratelle on the scoring list (i apologize, I believe I said it was Vic Hadfield's record, but I never promised more the 20% facts so MWHUHAHAHAHA!), and moved the Rangers four points ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers (this must be killing you guys!). For more on this story, and some really cool quotes from Ricky D. go to TSN.ca.

My hats of to TSN. I watched the Calgary / Los Angeles game last night (which Calgary won 2-1 and put them back in first over the Avs) and have to say that they need to teach the American broadcasters how to televise hockey. The way you guys film the game is great. The angle is lower, and closer, and the picture is clearer. The broadcasters themselves are the best (except for Sam and J.D., I love those guys). If the States can ever get it right and really show hockey the way the Canadians do, I think it would really help sell the product. Just my 3 cents.

Last night's scores:

Boston 3 Buffalo 4 F
Washington 5 Carolina 1 F
NY Rangers 5 NY Islanders 1 F
Florida 5 Pittsburgh 3 F
Los Angeles 1 Calgary 2 F
St. Louis 2 Chicago 3 F (OT)
Anaheim 1 Dallas 2 F
Minnesota 1 Vancouver 2 F

Game of the night:

NY Rangers at Ottawa 7:30 PM

The last time they met, Ottawa was kicked around by the Rangers to the tune of 5-1. I was there and the Bosher was a happy man, as was everyone else in Section 414! I can't wait to see how these teams play each other. This should be a great game, even for non-homer Ranger fans like me! Enjoy the games!!

Montreal's Money Man!

Cristobol Huet. The NHL's latest surprise, Cristobal Huet has solidified Montreal's goaltending and is helping the Canadians secure a playoff birth. Huet made 36 saves last night to help the Habs defeat the Islanders 2-0, and record his sixth shutout of the season.

Huet seems to have been the 'Player to be named later' in the 2004 deal that brought Radek Bonk to Montreal for goaltender Mathieu Garon. The way Bonk has played this year, I would say that it's the other way around (Ottawa Senators traded Radek Bonk to the Los Angeles Kings for a 3rd round selection (Shawn Weller) in 2004 then the Kings traded Bonk to the Montreal Canadiens with Cristobal Huet for Mathieu Garon and a 3rd round selection (Paul Baier) in 2004.).

Huet is tearing a page out of the Martin St. Louis buried gems book. All but forgotten, in fact never really given a chance (reading TSN's evaluation of him: "Is physically limited and will never be more than a backup netminder in the NHL. Needs to learn shooters' tendencies better.") Cristobal Huet has exploded into NHL All Star form, and it couldn't have happened at a better time. The 30 year old, is an unrestricted free agent this year (I learned that from Pierre MacGuire on Hockey Night in Canada, thank you sir!) and will certainly grab a ton of attention if the Habs don't negotiate a deal with him prior to the free agent deadline. I'm sure they will. Aside from his stellar play, this guy has got probably the coolest hockey name since Guy Carbonneau.

Last night's scores:
San Jose 1 Columbus 4 F
Toronto 3 Philadelphia 2 F
NY Islanders 0 Montreal 2 F
New Jersey 3 Ottawa 2 F (SO)
Anaheim 3 Colorado 4 F
Minnesota 3 Edmonton 2 F
Nashville 3 Phoenix 5 F

Game of the night:
Los Angeles at Calgary 8:30 PM

Can Los Angeles, along with their new coach make one final push towards the playoffs? Can Calgary ever find the back of the net? Calgary just lost first place in the Northwest to Colorado last night, so I would say a fire has been lit under their most intimate of areas. Enjoy the games!

Yzerman ties Lemieux with 690th goal

Steve Yzerman helped the Wings roll over the St. Louis Blues last night with a 4-1 victory. The win, clinched a playoff berth for the Wings and saw Yzerman tie one of the NHL's all time greatest players. Now 8th amongst all goal scorers, Yzerman is only 4 goals away from tying Mark Messier who sits 7th, with 694 goals. Yzerman has 11 goals, and 14 assists on the year and is +7. "It's amazing watching him still compete at such a high level, especially for a man of his years." said youngster Chris Chelios.

It was an evening of record tying last night, as Jaromir Jagr tied Adam Graves for the Rangers all time goal scorer with 52, and tied the all time Ranger points leader Vic Hadfield with 109.

Three teams have no clinched playoff spots. The Detroit.Red Wings, the Ottawa Senators, and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Just kidding, the Carolina Hurricanes. I'm going to go out on a limb here and make a prediction. Playoff Beard Prediction: 13 more teams will clinch playoff spots. You heard it here first!

Last night's scores:

Florida 4 Boston 3 F (SO)
Tampa Bay 1 Carolina 2 F
Buffalo 4 NY Rangers 5 F (SO)
Detroit 4 St. Louis 1 F
Los Angeles 4 Vancouver 7 F

Game of the night:
Anaheim at Colorado 9:00 PM

The two 5th place teams in the West face off tonite! This should have a playoff type atmosphere (I know I've been using that tag a lot lately, it's like hearing Bill Clement and Gary Thorne moan on and on about how badly he wants to bed Joe Sakic and Steve Yzerman, or hearing every color man say '(insert goalie' name) stood on his head') as both of these teams are trying to position themselves. Colorado with a win, can jump to third place in the West if they finish above the Flames. Anaheim is hot. Teemu Selanne is very hot! This guy is playing like his old self. SASSY! Enjoy the games!!

Power Rankings

According to TSN.ca, here are the TOP 15 teams in the NHL:

1. Detroit Red Wings
2. Ottawa Senators
3. Dallas Stars
4. Philadelphia Flyers
5. New York Rangers
6. Anaheim Mighty Ducks
7. Nashville Predators
8. Carolina Hurricanes
9. Buffalo Sabres
10. San Jose Sharks
11. Montreal Canadiens
12. Atlanta Thrashers
13. Florida Panthers
14. Tampa Bay Lightning
15. Calgary Flames

Can't really argue with many of the picks. I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I think the Rangers are a little high. Since the Olympic break they have been soft defensively, and really need to find the stingy game that brought them to the top of the Atlantic Division before the playoffs start. Since, this list seems to be a 'What have you done for me lately?' ranking, I really think the Islanders deserve some credit for playing so hard, especially since half their team was traded at the deadline. Edmonton is also putting some pressure on the teams surrounding them lately too. Also, I'm leaning towards agreeing with one of my annonymous commenters that the Devils and Lightning may be in danger of losing their playoff spots (most likely to the Habs and Thrashers). The Devils blew it last night against the Leafs. I gave you a chance and you BLEEEEEWWW IT!!! Name that line! Anyone? Anyone?

PlayoffBeard Fantasy Update:It is a sad day for one of Bosh's fantasy teams, as they have pulled a page from Boston and fallen out in the first round of the playoffs. My other team (Boshimus Maximus) takes to the ice tonite, after enjoying a lovely first round bye.

Last night's scores:

Calgary 2 Dallas 3 F
San Jose 5 Chicago 4 F (OT)
Toronto 4 New Jersey 3 F
Montreal 6 Pittsburgh 5 F
Edmonton 4 Colorado 3 F (SO)

Game of the night:
Buffalo at NY Rangers 7:00 PM
Can the Rangers finally solve the Sabres? Now would be the time to do it, because I believe they are on a 5 game losing streak. The Rangers look to make it 6! Enjoy the games!

The Playoff Picture

Is this getting good or what? With about a dozen games remaining for most of the NHL, the playoff picture is still wide open. In the East the point difference from sixth place to twelth place is just ten points. In the West, the fifth place team is separated from the tenth place team by 6 points! I know you are saying to yourself, Bosh, come on, you are pulling our legs. Not this time folks. Here are the standings as of today:

Eastern Conference

1. Ottawa 102pts
2. Carolina 98pts
3. Philadelphia 90pts
4. Buffalo 93pts
5. NY Rangers 90pts

7. New Jersey 79pts
8. Montreal 77pts
9. Atlanta 76pts
10. NY Islanders 71pts
10. Florida 71pts
12. Toronto 70pts

Western Conference

1. Detroit 103pts
2. Dallas 97pts
3. Calgary 86pts
4. Nashville 92pts
5. Anaheim 86pts
6. Colorado 85pts
7. Edmonton 82pts
7. Vancouver 82pts

Bruins fire GM Mike O'Connell

FINALLY!!! Probably the worst GM the NHL has ever seen this side of Mike Milbury has finally been shown the door! TSN.ca is reporting the story that Boston GM Mike O'Connell has been sacked and will be having more information and a press conference on it at 6pm.

Here are a list of some of O'Connell's greatest hits:

The Joe Thorton trade (this is why you got fired ass!)
The Sergei Samsonov trade (this one didn't help either!)
Walking away from the Bryan Berard arbitration settlement
The Kyle Mclaren holdout
Signing Martin Lapointe to a ridiculous contract (5 years for $25 million if I remember correctly)
The Jason Allison holdout
The Anson Carter holdout

Now if you can only get rid of that jackass Harry Sinden, Boston may be able to become an elite franchise again.

Jagr hits 50

Jaromir hit the 50 goal mark last night, the first time that has been done in the NHL since 2002-2003. He is the third Ranger to ever hit the mark, and is 2 goals away from tying the mark set by Adam Graves. Jagr now leads all scorers with 105 points (50 goals, 55 Assists). Joe Thorton of the San Jose Bruins, sorry Boston Sharks has 100 points (25 goals, 75 assists) and is Jagr's closest competition (but not really). Jagr has really poured it on during this stretch run, and is truly carrying the Ranger's to the promised land. He had a his second hatrick of the season Wednesday night in a losing effort to Philly. This guy is fun to watch.

PlayoffBeard Breaking News!

Dallas has just won another shootout. No I'm not kidding. If any team has reaped the rewards of the shootout it is Dallas. 11points have been awarded to this team who have simply dominated the shootout. Without those points in the standings, they would have a meager lead over Anaheim in the Pacific division. Texas as you know borders the Pacific Ocean (never been to Dallas Beach and Yacht club? it is so choice). I digress, it will be interesting to see if there is any backlash from the shootout, or if teams will now look at stacking their squads with individuals who excell at it. Good one on one goalies, and dominant breakaway forwards.

Last night's scores:

Calgary 2 Columbus 3 F
NY Rangers 2 Florida 3 F (SO)
Boston 2 New Jersey 4 F
NY Islanders 3 Pittsburgh 4 F (OT)

All Canadian tonite kids:

Game 2 of Home and Home with Montral and Toronto, and Game 3 of Home and Home and Home with Edmonton and Vancouver. What could be better? A case of iced down Labatt Blue's, a frosty mug, and some funions. That's what I'm talking about. Enjoy the games! MUCH LOVE!

The Eagle has landed

Crash landed really. Ed Belfour's season ended Thursday. The Toronto Maple Leafs placed Belfour on Injured Reserve because of problems with his back. This puts the icing on what has been a very dissapointing season for the 40 year old goaltender. He had a 22-22-4 record this season, and last played against the Islanders on March 10.

Mikael Tellqvist, the Maple Leafs new number one goaltender was welcomed into the role prison style. Tellqvist was pounded by the Montreal Canadiens giving up 4 first period goals, ultimately going on to lose to the Canadiens 5-1. The writing has been on the wall all season for the Leafs unfortunately. A team predominantly made up of aging veterans, and chronically injured players has led to a very dissapointing season. The Leafs bid for the final playoff spot will be a Herculean task (nice word usage eh?). For more on this story visit TSN.ca.

Last night's scores:
New Jersey 5 Atlanta 6 F (OT)
San Jose 0 Detroit 4 F
Toronto 1 Montreal 5 F

Game of the night:

Ottawa at Buffalo 8:00 PM
I think i picked this matchup last week. Buffalo is still chasing Ottawa for first in the Northeast and is looking to rebound from a 5-0 thrashing (i'm here all week!) at the hands of Atlanta last week. Ottawa is second overall in the NHL with 100 points. Two behind Detroit. Enjoy the games jungle friends!

Playoff Beard hits 100!

Since I began this site in late January, I have been religious about bringing you something regarding the wonderful world of Hockey on a daily basis. My internet sensei Mike, who runs a blog called Hacking Netflix said to make sure I post every day. Well I have done so, and more, sometimes posting three of four articles a day (during the Olympics, and before the trade deadline it was a media blitz here at playoffbeard.com). Hopefully all of you have found the content to be fairly accurate ( i believe I stated it would be 20% accurate on day 1) and perhaps humorous. Perhaps not...

LA Kings get new coach
The Kings fired Andy Murray on Tuesday and he has been replaced with John Torchetti (who looks like Bull from Night Court). The Kings started the season hot, but have fallen out of the playoff race, and now have 12 games and new coach to try and right the ship. To read more about this story and the King's uphill battle visit TSN.ca.

Washington 2 Florida 3 F
Philadelphia 6 NY Rangers 3 F
Minnesota 2 Dallas 4 F
Colorado 4 Anaheim 5 F (OT)

Game of the night:
Edmonton at Vancouver 10:00 PM
Game 2 of a 3 game battle. Vancouver took the first one, so expect the Oilers to come out fighting. This all Canadian battle will finish on Saturday, most likely with game misconducts and suspensions! Enjoy the games!

Atlanta takes over 8th playoff spot

Atlanta stole a game from the Bruins last night by virtue of a 5-4 shootout win, and in doing so, stole the 8th and rinal playoff spot from the Habs. It didn't help that the Canadiens took it dry and hard from the Islanders last night. I know this is slightly off topic, but Rick DiPietro! Brother! Where have you been all season! This guy is playing some of his best hockey and actually keeping the Isles in the playoff hunt. Last night's win saw him make 33 saves.

Back to Atlanta. The Thrashers have been knocking on the door of the playoffs for the past month (Sarah Connor?) and have won seven of their last nine games. This team is humming. Atlanta has 74 points and sole possession of the 8th spot. Montreal is in 9th with 73, Toronto in 10th with 70, the Isles in 11th with 68, and Florida and Boston with 67, and 66 points. Realistically, the playoffs are attainable for all of these teams. Tampa Bay and New Jersey are in 6th and 7th with 77 and 76 points, so they don't exactly have a stranglehold on their spots. Their could be a lot of movement in the East in the 6 thru 8 spots in the next few weeks. More movement than I'd see after a bowl of chili and glass of tequila at room temperature.....ewwwwww.

Last night's scores:

Atlanta 5 Boston 4 F (SO)
Phoenix 5 Columbus 2 F
Montreal 1 NY Islanders 3 F
Pittsburgh 2 Ottawa 5 F
New Jersey 1 Philadelphia 2 F
Nashville 3 Detroit 2 F (SO)
Carolina 2 Toronto 3 F
Calgary 1 Minnesota 3 F
San Jose 6 St. Louis 0 F
Vancouver 4 Edmonton 1 F

Game(s) of the night:

Carolina at Buffalo 7:00 PM
Philadelphia at NY Rangers 7:00 PM

As we come down to the wire, the games are getting better and better. Most of them mean alot more. These two games represent battles amongst 4 of the top teams in the East.

The Countdown begins!

Your home for all things hockey and facial hair, Playoffbeard.com has just launched the 'Countdown to the Beard'! As you can see on your right, from this day forward we look forward to the playoffs and the chin mullet that often accompanies it. I will be breaking down the best and worst playoff beards, who my top five playoff beards will be, and perhaps some actual playoff hockey coverage as well. In a few weeks I will introduce the the Playoff Beard Scale, a precise and very accurate tool that will help you at home grade and identify the playoff beards you see during the post season.

This is what we've been waiting all year for gang. If you see a beard you like, let me know, email me pictures and we will get them up here. Who will win the real Norris Trophy?

Last night's scores:

Buffalo 0 Atlanta 5 F
Tampa Bay 5 Florida 6 F (OT)
Boston 2 NY Rangers 5 F
Montreal 4 Washington 2 F
St. Louis 2 Nashville 4 F
Anaheim 2 Dallas 1 F
Colorado 5 Los Angeles 0 F

Game of the night:

A couple of very nice West Coast battles are on the card tonite:

Nashville at Detroit 7:30 PM
Vancouver at Edmonton 9:00 PM

Edmonton has finally pushed Vancouver out of the playoff bubble (psst as the Bosher predicted), so expect Vancouver to come out strong tonite, or Canucks fan can only hope. Lately they have looked like they are taking advantage of the hash bars up there. Nashville is chasing Detroit, and may not be able to catch them, but if they have a hope, the climb to first place in the Central starts tonite. Enjoy the games!

Playoffs begin today!

No, not the real playoffs, but for those of us with NHL Fantasy teams (and those of us who drafted well), the playoffs start today. The Bosher has had a pretty good Fantasy regular season. Both of my teams have made the playoffs, and one (Boshimus Maximus) has won the President's Trophy (if there is such a thing) and a first round bye with a first place finish. My other team, didn't finish as strongly as I would have hoped, but ended up in the fifth spot. This team (Dr. Chim Richalds) will be facing off against the 4th seed. If only I could pick up Carl Racki for a little added grit. Anyone? Anyone?

Last night's scores:

Colorado 5 San Jose 6 F
Detroit 7 Vancouver 3 F

Jagr the Magnificent

If there were any doubters out there about the Rangers, their bid to make the playoffs, or the opinion that he was washed up, Jagr shoved it up their collective asses last night with a candle on the end of it ( great scene from Platoon by the way..."The only thing that can kill Barnes, is Barnes."). Jagr will be MVP. Even if he is out duelled by Joe Thorton in the scoring race (which there is little chance of that happening), no single player has meant more to his team this year. He has single-handedly put a team, franchise and city on his back, and carried them to the promise land.

Jagr torched the Toronto Maple Leafs last night with a goal and three assists, and eclipsed the 100 point mark in the process. The first time a Ranger has done so since 1992 when Messier had 107 and Leetch ended the season with 102 . Jaromir Jagr also broke the Rangers franchise record for points by a right winger, held by Ranger favorite Rod Gilbert with 97 points, in 1971 -72 and 1974-75.

The Rangers defeated the Leafs 5-2 last night, ultimately sealing the fate of Toronto. On a side note I'd like to send a big thank you to the NY Post, and the NY Daily News, for still not putting the 1st place New York Rangers on the back cover of your newspapers. It's much more important to be updated on a daily basis what an asshole Stephan Marbury is. Perhaps an expose on Larry Brown's shampoo is in order? Great reporting guys. Sincerely, keep it up.

This just in, Dallas has won another shootout. You think i'm kidding? Check last night's scores! Dallas has now won ten straight shootouts!

Game of the Night!

It's Saturday folks, and what better way to spend the day than to hit the Home Depot, and Bed Bath and Beyond, if there's time, if there's time, and watch some hockey!!! We have a nice little Saturday planned.

Instead of picking one game today, I suggest you watch them all. If you plan accordingly, you can watch a minimum of four games today. Here's what's on the card for this Saturday:

Carolina at Boston 12:00 PM
Carolina is are hotter than a cowboy on Brokeback Mountain right now. This team is kickin' ass and taking names.

Dallas at San Jose 4:00 PM
Dallas is playing great, and San Jose is on a 5 or 6 game win streak right now, and threatening to push Edmonton and Vancouver out of the playoffs.

Philadelphia at Atlanta 7:00 PM
Atlanta is battling for the 8th and final spot. Philly is still trying to catch the Rangers.

Pittsburgh at Montreal 7:00 PM
Montreal is trying desperately to hold onto the last playoff spot. The Penguins suck.

Toronto at NY Rangers 7:00 PM
The Rangers barely snapped their losing skid last Thursday against the Caps. They have a chance to continue against an awful Leafs team.

Buffalo at Ottawa 7:00 PM
This game should rock. Best matchup of the day.

Florida at Washington 7:00 PM
See above.

Calgary at Nashville 8:00 PM
Another great matchup. Two hot teams.

Detroit at Edmonton 10:00 PM
Can Roloson continue his winning streak?

St. Louis at Los Angeles 10:30 PM
Sanford down in St. Louis, means Lalime gets another shot. Or should i say another 40-50 shots taken on him.

Enjoy the games!

Trouble in Vancouver?

Man can I call it or what? Last week I was talking about Vancouver's shaky playoff hold, and it looks like I was right. Now there are obviously bigger problems going on than just goaltending, because it takes it a team effort to fall in the standings the way the Canucks are. Right now, Julia Louise Dreyfus's new sitcom has a better chance of survival than Vancouver right now. Rumors are abound that Crawford is losing control of the team, and by the way they are playing that would be no surprise. Vancouver managed to obtain some defensive help, and a netminder, but neither did much in the 5-0 beating at the hands of the Predators....they could not get to the choppa! They tried unsuccessfully to deal Bertuzzi at last weeks trade deadline, and perhaps that is part of the problem. But who would trade for him? The guy has been playing like crap and every fan in the NHL hates him for what he did to Steve Moore. His medicine is going down hard.

Vancouver is barely holding onto the last playoff spot with 76 points. Anaheim and San Jose are just 2 and 3 points behind them. San Jose is on a tear right now, so I wouldn't be surprised to see them take the last spot. Joe Thorton is playing out of his mind and leads the league with 97 points. Someone is happy he was traded perhaps?

Last night's scores:

Phoenix 0 Nashville 2 F
Calgary 2 Edmonton 3 F (OT)
Dallas 4 Los Angeles 1 F
St. Louis 2 San Jose 5 F

Game of the night:

Philly is battling to regain first place in the Atlantic, Tampa is battling to remain in the playoff hunt. Enjoy the games!

(Chuck) Norris Trophy candidates

Since we are nearing the completion of the 2005-2006 NHL Season, I thought I would start breaking down the awards, and those who I feel will have a good chance of winning them.

The Norris trophy. Awarded to the best defenseman, and the individual with the best beard and roundhouse kick. This year we have a busload of possibilities. I'm going to give you my top three, and hopefully pick the winner (I picked Sweden to win the Gold and the Rangers to make the playoffs this year, so I'm not doing to shabby this year!!). Here are my top three, in no particular order:

Matt Schneider of the Detroit Red Wings
What a season Schneider is having. 21 goals, 31 assists, and an amazing +26. If he's on the ice, chances are he's scoring, helping someone else to score, and keeping you away from his net. He's no Mary either. Schneider has always played with a certain level of ferocity (ever since he was a Ranger, man I can understand that, cuz we were all pissed back then. Side Note....one of Sather's biggest blunders was not resigning this guy, he was a great New York Ranger), and has amassed 76 minutes in penalties. Schneider also has 25 power play points and 4 game winning goals. Fortunately Schneider is a big part of my first place fantasy squad.

Lubomir Visnovsky of the Los Angeles Kings
Visnovsky is having a stellar campaign. 17 goals, 43 assists, and a very nice +14. Visnovsky has been making his living on the power play this year with 37 points and has recorded 3 game winning goals. If you drafted him in your fantasy team this year, then you are happier than Frederica Bimmell at a seamstress convention. Visnovsky is a huge part of LA's powerhouse season.

Niklas Lidstrom
It's hard to not name this guy. Lidstrom is always up for or winning this award (he's won it 3 times (2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003)). It won't be long before we have to rename this the Lidstrom trophy. This year is no different. Lidstrom has 13 goals, and 54 assists and is a +13. He has 44 points on the power play and 2 game winning goals. If Lidstrom wins it this year, no one will be shocked. This guy is the model of consistency.

Here are a few other guys worth looking at, but I don't think they will make the final three due to weaknesses that these fellas above really don't have. Bryan McCabe is having an outstanding year point wise for the Leafs, especially on the PP, but he is a -1. Wade Redden is having a career year as well. 46 points and a +33, but his point totals don't come near my top 3. Dion Phaneuf, your years will come my man. This youngster has had an amazing season, and if not for the depth of the rookie class he'd be raising the Calder Trophy this year and having tea with Ms. MacGill. Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Sergei Zubov, and Zedeno Chara, are all playing world class hockey this year.

I think the winner is going to be a toss up between Lidstrom and Schneider. If you went on points alone you have to give it to Lidstrom, but I think Schneider has had a better all-around season. I'm going to say Matt Schneider wins the Norris Trophy. PlayoffBeard Alert: Schneider grows a beauty in the post season. His beard would make Kris Kristofferson weep, and order the roast duck with the mango salsa.

Last night's scores:

Philadelphia 4 Florida 0 F
Anaheim 1 Detroit 3 F
Columbus 2 Chicago 3 F

Game of the night:

NY Islanders at Atlanta 7:00 PM
Let's give the Islander's there due. Milbury tried to sink this team like the Andrea Doria, but they have refused to quit and are on a 4 game winning streak. Unfortunately the lost Alexei Zhitnik the other night to a broken ankle for the rest of the season but I think they are used to this kind of adversity. Atlanta wants the last playoff spot. So do the Isles. This should have a playoff type feel to it. DiPietro has been playing like a man possessed lately as well. The Olympics actually did a player good (he played for USA so in fairness their was plenty of time to rest). Enjoy the games!

Ranger's slide hits six games

The New York Rangers have finally hit their first wall of the season. No one expected what they have produced thus far, so it's hard to really get down on them. The Rangers have had a lot of difficulty finding the net, last night they finally eclipsed the two goal mark. In fairness to this team, they have not stopped working. It isn't as though they have quit. They certainly haven't. They are a very hard working team, and fought all game last night, but were outmatched by a superior team. The Hurricanes are amazing this year by the way. All credit in the world goes to this team and their coach Peter Laviolette for blowing the doors off this league.

The good news is, that everyone else has been sucking it up too. Philadelphia hasn't gained any ground on the Rangers and are still sitting in second place two points behind them with 80. I don't think there is any need to panic. The Rangers have time to find their game again, and get the momentum shifted the other way. Larry Brooks of the New York Post is even surprisingly supportive this morning. Perhaps this team has helped him rediscover his love of hockey?

Regardless, the Rangers are poised to finally reach the playoffs since 1996-97. This team is fun to watch, and should continue to build on what they have done for years to come. Keep your heads up guys, you are still the first place New York Rangers!

Fantasy Report

For many of us, the playoffs start next week.....those of us who enjoy the fantasy hockey lifestyle. If you haven't already clinched a playoff spot, hopefully you will this week, otherwise you are hitting the fantasy golf course sooner than the rest of us.

The Bosher has had a pretty good year. Both of my teams have clinched playoff spots, and one team is first in the division. I wanted to share my lineups with you, to show you how I did it.

My first place team...Boshimus Maximus, is comprised of mostly vets, and until Hasek got hurt, pretty solid goaltending. Here's the entire roster:

M. Sundin (Tor - C) -
M. Modano (Dal - C)
M. Naslund (Van - LW)
H. Zetterberg (Det - LW)-
M. Parrish (LA - RW)
T. Amonte (Cgy - RW)
C. Pronger (Edm - D)
M. Schneider (Det - D)
S. Zubov (Dal - D)
T. Poti (NYR - D)
J. Allison (Tor - C)
P. Prucha (NYR - C,RW)

R. Emery (Ott - G)
A. Niittymaki (Phi - G)
E. Belfour (Tor - G)
D. HasekDTD (Ott - G)

My second team (currently in 4th) is Dr. Chim Richalds(figure that one out and you get a prize). This team is built on youth, and some really nice IR surprise pickups. Particularly Eric Staal, and Patrick Elias. I was the last to draft so I also had first dibs on Ovechkin, which has worked out pretty well, as most of you are already aware. I just grabbed Peter Budaj in favor of Marc Denis (who has been splitting time with Pascal Leclaire all season), because he will be getting the majority of the starts for a pretty good Avs team till Jose Theodore comes off the IR. Anyway here's the roster:

E. Staal (Car - C)
J. Allison (Tor - C)
A. Ovechkin (Was - LW)
P. Elias (NJ - C,LW)
D. Heatley (Ott - LW,RW)
T. Hunter (NYI - RW)
B. Leetch (Bos - D)
D. Morris (Pho - D)
N. Baumgartner (Van - D)
W. Redden (Ott - D)
P. SchaeferDTD (Ott - LW)
R. Nash (Cls - LW)
S. Gonchar (Pit - D)
A. Yashin (NYI - C)

C. Joseph (Pho - G)
R. DiPietro (NYI - G)
E. Nabokov (SJ - G)
P. Budaj (Col - G)

That's it folks. Ill keep you poste on how I do in the playoffs! Good luck to everyone!

"The only thing better than beer,....is tea with Ms. MacGill!"

No. 1 Roloson, playing like No. 2

5 days ago Dwayne Roloson was in Minnesota, the second half of a fairly succesful goalie tandem involving Manny Fernandez. Today Roloson finds himself the number one goalie in Edmonton, and the holder of 3 consecutive losses. His failure to keep the puck out of the net has the Oilers falling faster than Harry Hamlin's career. Edmonton is now in a tie for the 8th and final playoff spot with Anaheim. Roloson has allowed 13 goals in 3 games against. Not a terrific start. If he doesn't pick his game up soon, he may lose his starting role, and much of the blame will fall to Kevin Lowe, for picking him up and giving up so much to get him. Time is running out....the Oilers have 17 games remaining.

In the words of Captain Kirk..."I don't believe in the no-win scenario....I don't like to lose."

Montreal retires no. 5, goodbye Boom Boom

Big win for Montreal last night. Not only did it move them into 7th place in the East with a 1-0 victory over the Rangers (ummm blueshirts, can we find the net please? 4 goals in 4 games, what is going on?) Cristobal Huet looked solid in net and is making Gainey look like a genius.

The big story yesterday was the retirement of Bernard (Boom Boom) Geoffrion's no. 5 jersey to the Bell Centre's rafters. Sadly, Geoffrion died early yesterday, which made the ceremony bittersweet. His family members flew from Atlanta (where he died) to honor him and his legacy, rather than cancel the ceremony. Best wishes go out to them and especially to his wife who was on the verge of tears all night and celebrated her husbands memory.

Geffrion was a two time NHL scoring champion and led the Habs to six Stanley Cups. What a player.

Last night's scores:

Buffalo 6 Philadelphia 5 F
Nashville 2 San Jose 3 F (OT)
NY Islanders 3 Boston 1 F
Edmonton 3 Columbus 4 F (OT)

Chicago 4 Detroit 6 F
Carolina 3 Florida 4 F (OT)
New Jersey 3 Pittsburgh 6 F
Los Angeles 2 St. Louis 1 F (SO)
Anaheim 5 Phoenix 3 F
Dallas 2 Vancouver 1 F

Game of the night:

Calgary at Colorado 3:00 PM
It's all up to Peter Budaj....can he hold till Theodore is ready to play and keep the Avs in the playoffs? If he plays like he did in the Olympics, then I say yes. Enjoy the games.

The Top 16

If the playoffs were to start today here is how things would look:

East
1. Carolina
2. Ottawa
3. NY Rangers
4. Buffalo
5. Philadelphia
6. New Jersey
7. Tampa Bay
8. Montreal

West
1. Detroit
2. Dallas
3. Calgary
4. Nashville
5. Colorado
6. Vancouver
7. Los Angeles
8. Edmonton

As things are right now, in the East, we can expect Carolina, Ottawa, New York, Buffalo and Philadelphia as locks. In the West, Detroit, Dallas, Calgary, Nashville, Colorado, and Vancouver (although it is getting tight for these two teams). The Teams that are barely hanging on are New Jersey, Tampa Bay, and Montreal in the East, and Los Angeles and Edmonton in the West.

In the East, Atlanta is just three points out, and behind them the Islanders and Leafs are 7 points behind. Thanks to Milbury however, the Islanders patchwork squad's chances are very remote. Toronto is done. They just can't put it together, especially against the teams they need to beat to surpass in the standings. I think Atlanta has a very realistic chance of knocking off Montreal or Tampa Bay right now. Keep an eye on them.

The West is much different story. The race is a lot tighter, and thats why I didn't put much faith in Colorado and Vancouver (especially after Lacroix dealt his number 1 keeper for a guy with a broken foot? what the hell is the matter with you? Given that I can see Colorado falling in the standings faster than a Value Jet. Better keep your fingers crossed that Peter Budaj can carry the load.) Vancouver addressed alot of problems on defence, but I'm not sure if they solidified their goaltending so that is why I have some doubts. They do have a lot of offence and should be able to maintain their playoff pace.

Los Angeles and Edmonton have three teams vying for their positions in Anaheim, Minnesota and San Jose. Los Angeles is only 1 point behind Vancouver. In fact 9 points separate the 6th place team and the 10th place team. This is going to be some race to the finish! Like Tom Cruise in Days of the Thunder..."Trickle always passes on the outside in turn 3"....man i'm such a loser!

Last night's scores:

Ottawa 3 Atlanta 1 F
Toronto 1 NY Islanders 2 F (SO)
New Jersey 4 Washington 3 F (SO)
Carolina 3 Florida 5 F
Minnesota 1 St. Louis 2 F (OT)

Game of the night:

Buffalo at Philadelphia 2:00 PM

Dallas at Vancouver 10:00 PM

In the words of Christopher Lloyd as the Klingon Commander in Star Trek III...."I give 2 minutes (in this case games) for you and your gallant crew". Two great games. Four great teams. Hockey and you...perfect together. Perfect. Enjoy the games!

Trade aftermath...

As usual there was a ton of action before 3PM yesterday. Perhaps more than expected, due to the new CBA and salary cap restrictions.

The Edmonton Oilers, were among the busiest. They got their number 1 goalie in Dwayne Roloson (although he did little to help against the Sharks last night) and very fast winger in Sergei Samsonov. If he can stay injury free and fullfill some of his potential then Kevin Lowe did a terrific job yesterday.

The Vancouver Canucks were hemorraging defenseman with injuries to Jovanoski, Salo, and Ohlund, so they did a great job in filling that need. Vancouver was probably the busiest team during the last 24 hours acquiring defencemen Ketih Carney, Sean Brown and Eric Weinrich, as well as a support goaltender in Mika Noronen. They definitely addressed their issues.

The Carolina Hurricanes were unfortunately forced to make a deadline move because of a sever and regular season ending injury to star winger Erik Cole. Otherwise I believe they would have stood their ground. However, all things being equal, they went out and acquired Mark Recchi from the Pens. He's definitely not the player that Cole is, but will provide solid second line support.

I absolutely love what the Rangers did. They had a serious hole on the powerplay, and needed a solid puck moving defenceman, and one who could quarterback the powerplay. The Rangers got that and more in Sandis Ozolinsh.

Mike Milbury. Once again you have dismantled and destroyed another team. Well done sir. At least you are consistent. Islander fans, I'm sorry, I really think your team could have made a push for the playoffs. Be thankful that this is the last season Milbury will be driving the train.

We're in the final stretch people....prepare to toss those razors away....the beard is almost upon us.

Last night's scores:

Montreal 3 Boston 0 F
Tampa Bay 5 Buffalo 8 F
Phoenix 4 Columbus 5 F
Los Angeles 3 Detroit 7 F
Colorado 2 Chicago 1 F
Dallas 0 Calgary 1 F
Nashville 3 Vancouver 2 F (OT)
Edmonton 2 San Jose 5 F

Anaheim re-acquires Jeff Friesen

After spending several seasons with the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals, Jeff Friesen is on his way back to the West Coast. The Anaheim Mighty Ducks have acquired Friesen from the Caps in exchange for a second round pick.

PlayoffBeard Alert: This is win/win for all of us. The Ducks are on the playoff bubble and Friesen has quite possibly the worst playoff beard/mustache ever seen. This is a case of it being so bad its good. We can only hope and pray that he puts the razor away!

Phoenix fire sale?

The Phoenix Coyotes have just sent defenceman Denis Gauthier to Philadelphia for forward Josh Gratton, and two 2006 second round picks. The Coyotes also dealt Sean O'Donnell to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Details of what they received in return have yet to be disclosed.

Is this a prelude to the Coyotes trading goaltender Curtis Joseph? We'll know in two and half hours!

Todd Simpson traded to Montreal...Bertuzzi trade looming?

The Canadiens have acquired Todd Simpson from the Chicago Blackhawks for a 6th round pick.

Interesting point by Bob McKenzie on TSN.ca is that the Habs are stockpiling players for a big trade to Vancouver for Todd Bertuzzi. I can't disagree with his assessment at all. The Habs have two great young goalies in Huet and Danis....Aebischer seems to be the odd man out right now, unless they deal one of the French boys. We'll know more before 3pm today!

Ovechkin vs. Crosby

Alexander Ovechkin and Capitals finished the final matchup between them and the Penguins on a strong note with a 6-3 victory last night. Ovechkin took a 10 point lead in the rookie scoring race over counterpart Sidney Crosby with a goal and two assists. Ovechkin has recorded the most goals by a rookie since Teemu Selanne exploded with 76 goals in the 1992-93 season for the Winnepeg Jets. He is currently 4th overall in the league for scoring. Regardless of who wins the Calder Trophy (which is almost certainly in the bag for Ovie), we all win. Having these two guys in the NHL for the next 20 years is going to be outstanding!

Trade Alert:
The New Jersey Devils acquired defenceman Ken Klee from the Toronto Maple Leafs for prospect right wing Aleksander Suglobov.

I haven't watched a whole lot of either of these teams this year, who have both had terrific seasons, so I'm going to check this one out. I highly recommend you do the same. Detroit is first in the West and Los Angeles is sitting in sixth. Enjoy the games.

Dwayne Roloson traded to Edmonton

The Oilers have been looking for a number 1 goalie all season, and they found one, ironically in a guy that wanted to be a number 1. Dwayne Roloson has been a tandem goalie with the Minnesota Wild's Manny Fernandez for several years now. However, since Fernandez recently signed a long term deal, it has been rumored that Roloson would become trade bait.

Minnesota received a first round draft pick and a conditional pick from the Oilers in Exchange for Roloson. For more on this trade visit TSN.ca.

In other moves, the Boston Bruins picked up Mariusz Czerkawski off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs. More on this also at TSN.ca.

Dallas remains perfect on the shootout

The Dallas Stars remain unbeaten on the shootout after a 4-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Jussi Jokinen is now 9-9 on the shootout, scoring every time. If you look through my archives, I believe I've stated that he will be going to the backhand. Marty Turco also remained perfect. Phillippe Boucher, Antti Miettinen, and Jussi Jokinen scored for Dallas in regulation.

The NHL trade deadline is tomorrow March 9th at 3:00PM. It will be very interesting to see what happens in the next 24 hours. There is lots of talk of potential movement, but the new salary cap may restrict said movement. Time will tell. Stay tuned for round the clock trade coverage! How about a little rookie on rookie action? Ovechkin vs. Crosby, I believe this is part three...perhaps four. The last few meetings definitely showcased Crosby, but Ovechkin has certainly proven that he is the man this season. Enjoy the games!

Ray Emery solid for Sens

Ray Emery is helping to quell the rumors that the Senators will be shopping for goaltending help at the deadline. Emery has lead the Senators to their fifth straight win, with a 31 save shutout performance against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning 4-0 last night. For more on this story goto TSN.ca.

Brooks Orpik of the Pittsburgh Penguins has been suspended for three games for his hit from behind on Carolina Hurricanes Erik Cole. Orpik will lose a little less than $10,000 in salary during the suspension. For more on this story visit TSN.ca.

Florida 3 Atlanta 4 F (SO)
Carolina 2 NY Rangers 1 F
Montreal 4 Philadelphia 5 F (SO)

Ottawa 4 Tampa Bay 0 F

Game of the night:

Let's keep it Canadian tonite. This game is huge for Toronto. It is a must win. Montreal holds the final playoff spot, so this game really will determine what the Leafs do at the deadline. Enjoy the games.

Hurricane Alert!

Bad news for the Carolina Hurricanes....their star winger Erik Cole suffered a compression fracture in his neck Saturday in a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Cole was hit from behind by defenceman Brooks Orpik. Cole will miss at least the remainder of this season. For more on this story check out TSN.ca.

Last night's scores:

Columbus 3 Anaheim 2 F (SO)
Nashville 2 Edmonton 3 F (OT)
Dallas 7 Chicago 2 F
Colorado 3 Minnesota 5 F
St. Louis 4 Vancouver 1 F

Game of the night:

Carolina at NY Rangers 7:00 PM

Even with the injury to Cole, the Hurricanes are still stacked offensively, with players like Staal, Weight, Brind'Amour and Ward. This also an East Coast matchup of two of the conferences best. The Hurricans are first in the East (as well as the NHL) and the Rangers are in third (5th in the NHL). Lundqvist should return in net for the Rangers tonite as well. Enjoy the games!

Lindros out for the season

Lindros re-tore the surgically repaired tendon in his wrist last night in an emotional 4-2 loss to the Senators, which all but spells doom to the Leafs. For more on this story visit TSN.ca.

Lindros's injury and the loss spells almost certain doom for the Leafs who are now 7 points out of the final playoff spot, currently held by the Montreal Canadiens. Expect the rumors to start swirling in Toronto, particularly around McCabe and Belfour. For more on these and other trade rumors visit Spector's Hockey.

Last night's scores:

Buffalo 3 Boston 2 F

Leaf Nation entering Dark Ages

The Toronto Maple Leafs fell hard to the Buffalo Sabres last night, where the celebration of the retirement of Pat LaFontaine's number 16, continued onto the ice for a final score of 6-2.

Currently five points out of the 8th and final playoff spot, the Leafs sit in 11th place, behind Atlanta and Boston. All signs currently point to them not making the playoffs this year and being sellers rather than buyers at the March 9th trade deadline. Toronto's play this year has been so discouraging, that rumors of trades involving mainstays Ed Belfour and Brian McCabe have begun to surface.

The Leafs followed the 96-04 Rangers plan of building a team consisting of high priced, overrated, and past their prime vets (so did you Pittsburgh). Jason Allison has worked out surprisingly well. Eric Lindros, has been what exactly what we all thought he would be. Physical and dominant when on the ice. When on the ice. Lindros has once again failed to play an entire season, because of injury. This year he lost 27 games to a wrist ailment. Toronto should have traded for him 5 years ago because he is now a shadow of his former self. Belfour has had a rocky year, but hasn't had much support in front of him. It really looks like the wheels have come off here.

However, on the bright side, a few good moves, can definitely help to acquire some blue chip prospects and draft picks. Goaltending and defense are always running at a high premium so I would be surprised if they aren't overwhelmed with offers. The next few game will really determine the fate of this team. Toronto plays Ottawa tonite, and if they don't have a good showing, expect Ferguson to be manning the phones early.

Last night's scores:

Florida 2 Carolina 5 F
Toronto 2 Buffalo 6 F
Vancouver 5 Chicago 4 F (SO)
San Jose 2 Edmonton 3 F
Minnesota 2 Anaheim 4 F

Game of the night:

San Jose at Calgary 10:00 PM

Iginla strikes!

What do you do when your team is playing inconsistent and having difficulty putting the puck in the net? You lean on your All Star Captain, and let him lead you to the promise land. Jarome Iginla got the Calgary Flames going with a two goal night and a Tron like battle with Barret Jackman at center ice. I love it when the captain's do this. There are many forms of leadership, but when your captain isn't afraid to get his hands bloody, it doesn't get much more inspiring. Many years ago, when the Philadelphia Flyers were on a typical multi-game skid, their captain Eric Lindros righted the ship. At the start of a game against the Dallas Stars, from the opening face off, Lindros skated directly at Derian Hatcher, the Stars captain and immediately dropped the gloves. One of the coolest things I've ever seen. Iginla is definitely following the Messier program....keep it physical, play hard and the rest will fall into place. Jarome Iginla has 25 goals, 19 assist and 63 penalty minutes this year.

Speaking of Philadelphia....those Rangers don't look too shabby do they?

By the way, has anyone noticed on Center Ice, during some games broadcast on FSN that instead of going to that regions commercials the cameraman usually just puts the camera on some fans? You also here the broadcasters small talking through the breaks. Last month I actually watched some Flyers fan eat a slice a pizza for 10 minutes. I was captivated! Another unexpected benefit of the Center Ice package!

Last night's scores:

Atlanta 2 Boston 3 F
Montreal 1 Florida 0 F
New Jersey 2 NY Islanders 3 F (SO)
NY Rangers 6 Philadelphia 1 F
Washington 1 Ottawa 7 F
Vancouver 1 Nashville 3 F
St. Louis 1 Calgary 3 F
Columbus 0 Colorado 1 F
Dallas 2 Phoenix 6 F
Minnesota 2 Los Angeles 3 F

Game of the night:

San Jose at Edmonton 9:00 PM
Edmonton sits in the 8th and final playoff spot in the West. The San Jose Sharks are currently in 10th, just 4 points behind the Oilers. This one should have a playoff atmosphere. Enjoy the games!

Fantasy Report

With all of the injuries from the Olympics, many top NHLers are taking a forced break for the time being. That leaves many of us Fantasy General Managers in a bit of a situation. Here are a few options that you may still find on the waiver wire / free agent pool, that you might want to consider as temporary substitutions:

Forwards

Daymond Langkow - Center
18 goals and 19 assists for 37 points, plays for Calgary and is especially good on the power play with 21 points. He also has 5 game winning goals.

Matt Cullen - Center
I like anyone on the Hurricanes at this point. 20 goals and 15 assists, 16 power play points and also has 5 game winning goals.

Nathan Horton - Center (plays right wing also)
Multi-positional, much like Robert Downey Jr. in prison.....which is very advantageous. Horton is having a terrific sophomore season, with 21 goals and 16 assists. He is +11 and also has 48 minutes in penalties.

Yanic Perreault - Center
If he's still available grab him. 20 goals and 28 assists, with 21 power play points he is great find. Perreault is also one of the best face off men in the league, and if your league tracks that stat, then he should be on your team.

Defense

Fedor Tyutin - Defense
5 goals, 16 assists, +9 and becoming very good on the point for the New York Rangers with 10 power play points.

Marek Malik - Defense
+22 people. Yes another Ranger, but let's face it, they have a pretty good defense corps. He has 2 goals and 12 assists this season.

Goaltenders

Yann Danis - Goaltender
Hasn't had much playing time this year, but the kid has been sharp, and since Jose Theodore is out, Danis should be getting some quality time along with Cristobal Huet. Both are really worth a look, but it is doubtful Huet is still on the market...if he is you should be getting him now.

Ray Emery - Goaltender
If he is still available in your league, GET HIM NOW. He will be replacing Dominik Hasek at least till the trade deadline, when Ottawa may trade for a goalie. However, if Emery can guard the pipes well till his Hasek's return, they may stand pat with him.

Vesa Toskala - Goaltender
Toskala has had a decent year (9-5-2 .889 sv%) in relief of Nabokov (who has played like ass) and just got a new contract. There is speculation that one of the Sharks goalies, may be traded, and I have a feeling it may be Toskala. A good chance he will wind up on a playoff bound team for the final stretch. That can only help you.

Those are the top guys I see available right now. If you guys think I've missed any, let me know and I'll add them to the list! Thanks for reading!

Last night's scores:

Boston 3 Carolina 4 F
Atlanta 4 Buffalo 2 F
Philadelphia 1 New Jersey 2 F (SO)
Ottawa 4 Pittsburgh 3 F
Nashville 0 Chicago 3 F
St. Louis 4 Edmonton 2 F
Detroit 2 Anaheim 0 F

Game of the night:

NY Rangers at Philadelphia 7:00 PM

Yeah, I'm being a homer here, but come on, these teams are battling for first in the Atlantic, and the previous games between these two rivals have been great. The last three have had to go to overtime. Enjoy the games!

Cujo moving North?

There is a lot of speculation that Curtis Joseph of the Phoenix Coyotes will be traded prior to the March 9th deadline. Where he ends up is uncertain, but possibilities right now include Edmonton, Vancouver, and more recently Ottawa. With the injury of Dominik Hasek, the Senators may require help in net to help secure their chances of winning the cup. There has been speculation that they were looking to make a trade for Oli Jokinen of the Florida Panthers (who helped torch the bolts last night by the way) to ease the pressure on youngster Jason Spezza. Now, however the Senators may have to address other needs.

I think it is ironic, that Hasek, the man who came out of retirement 3 years ago and bumped Cujo out of the starting job in Detroit (really it was temporary, I think he only ended up playing 16 games for the Red Wings with the same gimpy groin he is suffering from now), may lose his starting job to Curtis Joseph. Joseph handled the situation in Detroit like a champ and that may be why he is being sought after prior to the deadline ( that and his low salary and great play this season). Playoff experience as well.....Joseph may be the answer for a few teams. Stay tuned to Spector's Hockey for more details and trade rumors around the league.

Last nights scores:

Montreal 5 NY Islanders 3 F
Washington 5 Toronto 3 F
Florida 8 Tampa Bay 2 F
Minnesota 2 Colorado 4 F
Vancouver 2 Calgary 1 F
Detroit 1 San Jose 5 F

Game of the night:

Philadelphia at New Jersey 7:30 PM
This should be a good game, but I'm really interested in watching it to find out the status of many of the NHL stars on these two teams. Simone Gagne is out for at least two weeks, will Forsberg be playing, what's up with Patrick Elias? These and many other unexplained phenomenon of the universe will be revealed tonite!! Stay tuned and enjoy the games!
